Posted: 25 Sep 2019 11:51 PM PDT I can see why Apple moved to APFS. It's better in lots of way than HFS+. But I don't think that the built in free storage report is reliable anymore. Honestly I don't really remember if HFS+ was that bad or not but now it started to really frustrate me. For example my system usually eats up 100+ gigs. Yes, I know that I can install an app or use Terminal to find out what eats my free space but I don't think an average user would do that. Why isn't there an easy way to do it? Side note - it turned out that Time Machine local snapshots were using a lot of space but it can't be disabled since High Sierra. I deleted them and get back about 70 gigs but it disappeared in a few minutes. APFS is out for years now. Is it really this hard to fix this? Or they simply don't care? I'm really curious. What do you think? [link] [comments]

Why is dictation on iOS much better than on Mac? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 02:56 PM PDT Hi, When I "type" a document on my phone using dictation it's fast with almost 0 mistakes. On my Mac, it's kinda slow and there are plenty of errors. Why is this? Does it use a different system...and is there a way to fix it? Both are set to English (US). Thanks [link] [comments]
Macbook pro retina 13" 2015, running hot 80c + Posted: 26 Sep 2019 01:34 AM PDT Hello Reddit, I am a new mac user since this week. Until now I am still exploring macOS and its features. I fixed a few things I considered as problems like:
Are these 'problems' normal for a MacBook? Especially the running hot part? Since I am used to windows laptops and desktops I am not used to seeing temperatures spike to 90 degrees when under a little bit of load. The fans kick in way too late in my opinion so I downloaded an app, to gain more control over the fan rpm which fixes the heating problem for me. Would like to hear more about your experience with MacBooks. Don't get me wrong btw because I really like the device and the OS thus far! [link] [comments]
Move all files in iCloud to free up space Posted: 25 Sep 2019 06:45 PM PDT I have a 2 TB plan for iCloud. Using about 500 GB at the moment but 300 GB of files in that folder are available offline. I need to move all of them to the cloud and make more space available on my local storage. How can I achieve this? I also have OneDrive for office use. In OneDrive, when I right-click in a directory or a file, it gives me the options: Free up space: this clears up space on my local storage. Make available offline: This downloads the files. I want to do the same in iCloud. [link] [comments]
New to Mac OS, Couple of Questions Posted: 25 Sep 2019 07:49 PM PDT Got a new macbook pro for my wife and I yesterday. Set it up and made my account as the admin account and my wife as a standard account. Wasn't thinking right at the time and made an admin account and changed my account to standard. I opened a terminal and notice my wife has her own application directory in her home directory but I don't have one in my home directory. Can I just mkdir application directory as admin under my home directory and chmod and chown the proper rights (as the admin account)? Also, is it even needed? When my wife installed chrome (for instance), it installed under the main application directory under root. Is there any way to specify a users application directory to install software? I would rather not have her apps show up when I'm logged in and vice versa. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Sep 2019 07:37 PM PDT My MacBook Pro 13 inch ( mid 2012) crashed and I had to resort to internet recovery followed by installing Mountain Lion through recovery mode. I was on high Sierra earlier. I found Mountain Lion to be much faster and felt more responsive. I need advice regarding advantages and disadvantages on not upgrading to High Sierra and continuing with Mountain Lion. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Sep 2019 03:45 PM PDT Hi guys, I am trying to find a way to have a 2 week view in my apple calendar. Currently there is the standard 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, but 2 weeks is really what I need. I found some old threads about using the debug tool to change how many days in a week, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Can anyone help with this? It would be much appreciated! Is Apple planning to eliminate "Search for an Older Mac" in Airdrop? (Catalina Beta) Posted: 25 Sep 2019 11:18 AM PDT Just tried out the Catalina beta, and now I can't airdrop between my laptop and work computer. No "search for an older Mac" appears anymore. :( Does anyone know if this is just a beta issue, or if Apple decided to cut off backwards compatibility? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Equivalent ram usage in different Macs with different RAM? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 05:45 PM PDT Suppose I have two MacBook Pros, one with 8GB and the other with 16GB ram but which are otherwise equivalent. If I open the same programs, will both computers consume the same RAM as seen in Activity Monitor? On my refurb Late-2013 MacBook Pro, it's using 11GB of ram while my Hackintosh with a i5-4690K and 8GB ram runs those same programs without issue as well. Both computers are handling them just fine; I'm just concerned if this RAM usage is normal. I'm absolutely clueless about how computers (and Macs in particular) actually use RAM. Considering buying Wipr, is there anything shady or suspicious about it? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 03:59 PM PDT Hey guys, with the new update of Safari, some of the extension are gone. Perhaps the most popular was uBlock Origin, so, there's a need to find a replacement. I've been searching and I'm very tempted to buy Wipr. Excellent feedback, very simple (in the sense that it's just installing and that's it), cheap, and I didn't saw any posts questioning the "ethic" of the app. However, I would like to confirm: is there anything shady or suspicious about it? I mean, that the company/owner that made could be selling the data of the users, that it's a company that sends the data to China, that it breaks privacy of the user, etc. Some of the other competition have this issues or at least the topic was discussed, so, that's another reason for me to me more inclined towards Wipr. Also, and btw, is there any other adblocker for Safari that is clearly better than Wipr, specially for a "normal user", not a "power-user" that dwells into the advanced setting, lists and such? Importing HEIC photos into MacOS Mojave as JPG possible? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 09:57 AM PDT So I recently switched to Mac from PC, after migrating all my photos I did a import from my phone and a lot of my images were duplicated. In the iPhone settings > photos > transfer to Mac or PC was set to automatic. In settings > camera > formats > it was set to high efficiency which is why on the phone they are HEIC but when they got transferred to my PC they came over as JPG. Then when I did the import on my Mac they came over as HEIC because the Mac knew how to handle those photos. I have since changed the camera setting to most compatible because I want JPG and not HEIC when I import into my Mac. My question now is how to reconcile things, ideally I would delete all the pictures I imported on my Mac from the iPhone and re-import so that they come over as JPG but I can't figure out a way to do this. Changing the photos setting to keep originals doesn't work because the originals are HEIC and the automatic setting doesn't work either because the Mac can handle the HEIC. This won't be an issue moving forward but any suggestions on how to fix it so I can do one import and only get JPG? [link] [comments]

Should I updated from el capitan? (late 2015 mbp) Posted: 25 Sep 2019 06:58 AM PDT hi everyone, I have a late 2015 MBpro with 2.5ghz i7 cpu, 16gb ram and R9 Amd graphic card. Since I bought it in 2016 I never upgraded the OS. Now I just got my battery replaced beacuse of the recent recall and i was considering upgrade to the latest Mac OS. actually I don't really feel the need to do it beacuse every software has run just fine until now ( I mostly works with CC Adobe suite so Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Premiere). but actually when browsing internet I've alwasys noticed an annoying and dramatic fast battery loss when using Firefox. I've been using Firefox for nearly a decade (mainly on windows tho) so I would like, if possible, to keep using it. do you know if upgrading to latest Mac OS, this issue would be better than now? or at least will safari improve significantly? anyway, would you reccomend to upgrade it ? [Catalina 10.15] Screen time doesn't ask for the code when trying to ignore limits Posted: 25 Sep 2019 09:01 AM PDT Hi all, I've set up screen time on my young daughter's laptop to limit the use of certain apps. In the options pane for screen time I set a four digit code to prevent the simple bypass of the limit by clicking "ignore limit" --> "for today". But as it turns out, I never get asked for the code so bypassing the whole screen time set-up is always two obvious clicks away... Am I missing something here? In the options pane it says specifically "Use a code [...] to allow more time once a limit has been reached". Is this an oversight that's going to get addressed in future updates or was it always the plan to leave this option to bypass? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Sep 2019 11:15 AM PDT Hey everyone, I just bought a used (Late 2016) MBP a couple weeks ago, first week or so it worked just fine, bumped it into Catalina beta about two days after getting it and it's been fantastic until Monday. For whatever reason the processor is throttling and the fan is spinning up to max. I've restarted it, reset the SMC, drained it, charged it, checked activity monitor but can't seem to find anything going on. It's chugging through everything and I've got no idea why. I use basically everything at default, I've only installed bluestacks (which doesn't run at startup), discord and steam. Other than that, no new additions or mods. Anyone have any ideas? How do I safely eject hard-drive for Time Machine? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 03:03 AM PDT Hi, noob here. As per the title, I don't know how to safely eject my hard drive that I use for the Time Machine backup. I tried pressing the remove disk button, but it told me that I didn't eject it properly. Thanks PS: also, my "system" is taking up 140GB on my hard drive and I also don't know how to get rid of all of that. I heard that the Time Machine drive needing to be put in might be the cause, or something along those lines. [link] [comments]

Is it possible to make a Checklist in the Stickies App? Posted: 25 Sep 2019 03:05 AM PDT I really love this feature on the notes app but would also do something like this in the Stickies. Is there something like this and if not, is there an app that can do the same? Currently running on Mojave 10.14.6 [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Sep 2019 05:14 AM PDT Hello, I want help with formatting a flash drive. But the flash drive doesn't work, long story short, a year ago I got this 32GB flash drive, I used it for trying out operating systems. One day I reformated it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it failed. When it failed it stopped showing in Finder and it was set to read-only. Today I plugged it into my Mac and it showed up in Disk Utility (Which sometimes it wouldn't) so I tried formatting it and looked at the output which said "Unable to write to the last block of the device." and now I'm wondering can I somehow make it so it would partition only the working part?
