Anyone else fed up with MacOS Page Setup's "Any Printer" default? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:41 PM PDT In Mojave and for as long as I can remember, I'm forever going into Page Setup and switching "Format For" from "Any Printer" to our actual (and only) printer so it uses the correct margins and paper sizes. Does anyone know how to change defaults so our printer is specified rather than Any Printer? I thought just having the one printer would mean that the Any Printer catch-all would be redundant but it's still there and still always the default. Many thanks in advance for any help. How do people update Homebrew? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:17 PM PDT I've been running the following commands about once a week and looking to see if other people are doing similar, or if there is something I'm missing completely, like a auto-updater???

Why does my MacBook Pro brighten automatically after ten minutes of inactivity? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:53 PM PDT Here's the scenario. Each night before bed I plug my laptop (2016 MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave) into the power adapter. I put on an album in iTunes and and dim the display till it's completely black. After about ten minutes each night, the display suddenly gets bright, which I can see because the lights are off in my room. The screen stays bright for about 15 or 30 seconds, then goes back to black. All the while the music keeps playing. What gives? Any way I can make it so the screen doesn't brighten for those 15-30 seconds? [link] [comments]
prevent apps from stealing focus Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:56 PM PDT I found a couple archived threads so far, with one guy saying it's impossible to prevent, and someone else saying it must be possible. My daily frustrations are Discord and Upwork, they both self-update and steal focus several times throughout the process. Ironically I like most everything else about those apps, but aghh it's so aggravating. It seems like a very basic rule that focus should be a **human** originated action. [edit]: specifically, does anyone know if it's possible to prevent this on an OS level? [link] [comments]
Mouse (bluetooth) wont connect at login screen Posted: 29 Aug 2019 09:31 PM PDT I just got a new Logitech mouse today and I can't get it to work at the startup/login screen. It works fine after I login (which is a pain with no mouse).. and after I log in, if I log back out to the login screen the mouse works fine.. also works fine waking up from sleep - but if the computer is powered off and back on, the mouse remains dead again until I log back in. I have a Magic Mouse which when re-paired with the mac works fine at the login screen.. At first I thought this was a Logitech issue but after some googling, it seems to be an OS X issue. I've reset the PRAM, re-paired the mouse, changed channels on the mouse, and it still will not work until someone logs-on to the computer.. Mac mini won't boot into startup menu, recovery mode, etc. NO MATTER WHAT - please help!! Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:58 PM PDT Hi all, I have a early 2009 Mac mini running OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.6 connected to an Asus MG279 by mini display port from the Mac to display port in the monitor. I've been trying to get to the startup menu, or use any startup commands at all which just wont work. I would hold down option, and the Mac Mini would still show it's white indicator meaning it was on, but my monitor showed no signal coming from the source. It would stay like this until I shutdown the Mac mini and booted it without any startup commands, to where it would startup like normal. I Troubleshooted as much as I could, I tried it from being shutdown, 4 different keyboards, using other startup commands such as Command R which had the same outcome and resetting the VRAM, which worked but didn't change anything, and going in from the targeted disk mode from system preferences, to no avail. Everything ends in an unresponsive, but showing its on Mac Mini that I need to shutdown and turn back on for it to start up. I've seen that sometimes there is a firmware password that doesn't allow startup commands, but apparently you fix this by doing the startup command of command R which like I said didn't work. At this point I'm really stumped, and my only two ideas are that either the monitor doesn't detect the Mac mini when in it enters startup modes such as recovery mode or startup menu (I've tried pretty much every startup command known to mankind with the same result) for some reason. The other case could be the Mac mini not being able to be put into any startup modes, but there's so many different reasons that could be causing that and I believe I've explored them all. Hopefully someone here can help me out, I feel like I've just about exhausted every option! [link] [comments]
can't delete bootcamp partition, what can I try? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:53 PM PDT Hey guys, a while back I used bootcamp with about 150gb partitioned for it. I stopped using it and thought I had deleted it entirely and added it back to my main drive but it turns out it is still there. I've tried a few methods to delete it like terminal: diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ BC1 disk1 (the bootcamp partition). I've also opened up bootcamp again to see about erasing it from there but it will not allow me too. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:34 AM PDT I made the mistake of resetting the keychain access on my Mac. I now no longer have saved passwords in safari, despite still having all the saved passwords under "passwords" on my iPhone. Is there a way to sync the passwords from the iPhone to the Mac? All non-MacOS will not open (Catalina 10.15 Beta) Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:29 AM PDT After recently updating to the Public Beta today, all non-MacOS apps (Chrome, Spotify, Slack, Skype etc.) will not open properly. I've reset all the permissions, removed PLIST files, reinstalled apps, checked the Disk Utility etc. to no avail. The weird thing is though, that my other user account on my iMac (non-admin) has no issues opening up any of these apps, so I've isolated the issue to being a User Account issue. Any suggestions on potential solutions would be great! Thanks :) [link] [comments]
How do you right click to open in a new tab when using Chrome on MBP? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:50 PM PDT I have a habit of opening several YouTube videos into new tabs. On the desktop, I right click and select "open in new tab". Just got a MBP and just started setting things up. When I press the trackpad on the right side, it acts the same as a left click. How do I get a right click from the track pad (and/or) how do I get Chrome to open a YouTube video in a new tab? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Continuity and Safari Tabs Will Not Work With My XS, But Does With My 5S? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:32 PM PDT I cannot sort out why MacOS Continuity and Safari iCloud tabs on my MBP (or my 5S) will not recognize my iPhone XS. My MBP recognizes my 5S's tabs. It has worked sporadically in the past but hasn't worked in over 3 weeks. Oddly, my XS recognizes both my MBP's and 5S's tabs, so the issue is clearly on the MBP side. Thus far, I have: - Shut off and restarted all devices too many times to count - Followed all set-up directions and settings according to Apple's website - Logged out of iCloud on all devices and logged back in - Ensured all devices are on the same Wifi network - Ensured Bluetooth is "On" on all devices - Paired my XS > MBP over Bluetooth - Directly USB connected my XS > MBP [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT Been banging my head against this one for a few hours now: I'm trying to create a password-protected .zip of a folder to share with someone using Windows, but no matter what I try, I keep running into the same two problems: 1) When opening the ZIP, it contains the entire directory path of nested folder...
... not just the intended folder
and 2) When opening the ZIP on a Windows machine, you don't get asked for the password when opening the zip, or when opening any of the folders in the path, but only when opening the individual documents inside that last folder. To be clear, the behavior I want is for the recipient (on a Windows machine) to double-click the zip, and at this point be prompted for a password, then upon providing it, for the zip to unpack not a path of folders, but the original folder only (ZipFolderName), which can be opened to access all its contents. So far I've tried in Terminal... and and (found on StackExchange) and (modification of what I found on StackExchange) and a couple zip-creating apps from the Mac App Store. All these methods produce the same result: the zip archive contains the entire path (Users/[me]/Downloads/ZipFolderName/ItemsInsideZippedFolder), and when double-clicked in Windows, no password is requested until opening the individual files inside the last directory in the path, and it asks for a password for each and every one separately. There's gotta be a way to created a password-protected zip just the target folder or target document without the entire path of folders, right? And to have Windows ask for the password when opening the zip, not the documents within? This shit shouldn't be this hard on a Mac. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:26 AM PDT This is really bothering me, as I empty my trash quite often and have to go through the prompts of xxx files can't be deleted because it is in use. I also get tired of seeing that my trash can has trash in it lol. Anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried what seems like everything including safe mode which still gave the same errors. Now, when I try emptying the trash can, here are the messages that I have to click continue through
I click continue
I click continue
I click continue
I click continue then it will empty the other contents of the trash I don't even use safari but apparently, it is running something thats stopping me from getting rid of these contents "C" and "0" are both in the folder "d" which was renamed from some super long name that I dont recall at the moment Inside folder "0" are the files 'SafariFamily', 'com.apple.routined', another folder called 'com.apple.Safari', 'come.apple.nsurisessiond', and 'com.apple.LaunchServices.dv' [link] [comments]
Hotspot from iPhone not working Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:58 PM PDT My mac is on macOS Mojave. My iPhone X is on iOS 13 beta 8 I think. When trying to connect the Mac to the phone, it connects and instantly disconnects. Any ideas to fix this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT Dear friends, I have a Mac Pro sitting in my living room, connected to TV via HDMI. Most of the cases we are using this as media provider to TV (like we use Safari to watch Netflix, etc) While family is watching TV through it, sometimes I need to start a remote access session. IS there a possibility to start this session as a separate screen, so family can still be able to continue watching their movie while I do what I need to do on second display? [link] [comments]
Is it normal to see a loading bar every time you restart your mac? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:03 PM PDT Hey guys! Sorry if this seems like a silly question or if it's been answered before but I can't find any info online whether it is expected behaviour to see a loading bar every time I restart my mac. I have a 15 inch 2017 MacBook Pro running a fresh install of Mojave, using APFS, FileVault turned off. Every time I restart my mac or on cold boot it shows a loading bar for 10 seconds before showing the login screen. Don't have any friends with current generation macs to compare against but for whatever reason I don't think it should take this long to boot. Again, I know it sounds silly but I just can't shake the feeling that something's not right with my mac. Can someone confirm if this is expected behaviour? If not, what should I do to speed up the boot process? Will downgrading to High Sierra fix the issue? I've tried doing a clean install of Mojave two times now and the "issue" still remains. It's driving me nuts, please help! [link] [comments]

Is anyone on Mojave or Catalina having a problem with Photos Library loading all thumbnails? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:20 AM PDT I've had my new MacBook running for almost a week now, but thumbnails appear as grey rectangles unless I scroll over them and let them load. I updated to Catalina to see if it would help any, but I'm still having the same issue. Any help would be great, thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:22 AM PDT Whenever I use the trackpad to swipe between desktops in mission control, I get this blurry square at the top right of my desktop/app. Any ideas on how to fix this, or is it a known bug? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Weird printer problem with MacOS Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:41 AM PDT I have a Brother DCP L-5500DN printer that is hardwired to a new iMac that has a weird problem. When turning the computer on in the morning, it automatically reprints whatever last document we printed the day before, that was already printed. It's costing a lot of paper and I'm not sure what is happening, whether or not this is a Mac or printer problem. Tried googling but have found no solution (or anybody else with this problem, for that matter). Anybody have an idea? [link] [comments]
