Further Details about Independent Repair Program + Concerns from an AASP and Former 3rd Party Technician

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:13 PM PDT

Firstly ill start with the details. This is a copy/pasted version of the newsletter distributed to AASP's today (Aug 29 2019).

Today Apple is introducing a new service program that is focused on out-of-warranty iPhone repairs. The Independent Repair Provider (IRP) program provides qualifying service companies access to Apple genuine parts, tools, training, service guides, and resources for iPhone repairs. IRPs are limited to performing out-of-warranty iPhone repairs, such as iPhone display or battery replacements. The program is launching in the United States with plans to expand to other countries. Apple Authorized Service Providers remains the best place for Apple customers to get repair service. The chart below illustrates some of the key differences between the AASP program and the IRP program.
    Benefit AASP IRP
Serviceable products All Apple products iPhone 6s and later
Apple repairs completed by certified technicians
Apple repairs completed by certified technicians
iPhone Battery, Display, other SUR Limited
    iPhone Whole Unit access
    Out-of-Warranty Repairs
    Free Apple certification* -
Warranty repair compensation with parts covered -
Apple 90 day repeat repair coverage -
    Apple Service Locator -
    Apple Authorized branding -
    Performance programs (ACSE, PSP) -

*Apple is pleased to share that Apple certifications are now free of charge to all AASPs worldwide. Frequently asked questions (FAQ) Q: Will IRP providers be compensated for covered repairs or have parts covered by Apple? A: Unlike AASP providers, IRP providers will not be compensated for labor nor will parts be covered by Apple. Q: Will IRP providers be listed on the Apple Service Locator? A: No, IRP providers will not be listed. Q: Can IRP providers resell service parts? A: The IRP program is intended for providers offering repair services and not companies reselling parts, except where prohibited by local laws. Q: Are repairs completed by an IRP covered by Apple 90 day repeat repair warranty? A: No, unlike repairs completed by AASPs, repairs completed by IRPs will not have Apple's 90 day repeat repair warranty coverage. Q: Are IRP technicians certified? A: Yes, iPhone Repair Providers are required to use Apple-certified technicians when conducting repairs on Apple products with Apple genuine parts.

Just to clarify on terminology a bit for the stuff above:
    - SUR = Same Unit Repair (repairs done on the customers actual device i.e. part replacements)
    - ACSE = Apple Customer Service Excellence. Remember that survey you got after a repair? this is part of that.
    - PSP = Premium Service Provider. If you do good on your performance metrics and do good on your ACSE stuff, apple calls you PSP and you get access to slightly better prices and other small benefits.

And just to throw in another point of reference, here are prices for iPhone Screens and Batteries. This is the cost Per Unit for AASP's. All of these are in Canadian Dollars, so convert them to your own currency for better idea:

Exchange Pricing = The price you get if you send the old part back within a certain time period. Failure to send it back (or if it gets lost) means apple bills you Stock pricing.
Stock Pricing = The actual cost of the part if you were to buy it to keep in-store.

    Part Exchange Pricing Stock Pricing
    6S / 7 / 8 Display 156 197.60
    6S Plus / 7 Plus / 8 Plus Display 175.2 216.80
    X / Xs Display 317.55 362.79
    Xr Display 207.20 239.20
    Xs Max Display 373.23 417.47
Battery for 8/8 Plus and below 33.15 132.09
    Battery for X and above 57.85 168.85

Now, as someone that works at an AASP now and use to work in a 3rd party repair store, here are a few things to say:

This is a small step in the right direction, but it still has some problems!

What i think is the biggest problem is that all the parts sold under IRP will have no warranty and will also cost significantly more than what they cost to buy from reputable suppliers! This means that if 3rd party stores want to be competitive with Apple or AASP's, they'll have to settle for only $10-40 of margin per repair, otherwise they'll be forced to charge higher prices than apple. Even though they're getting real parts, they're getting shot in the back on costs, and they'll get double-shot on warranty. Pricing like that is in no way competitive and will only hurt Repair stores that wish to use it, which only further pushes people towards the Apple/AASP route.

If a part fails later on, then these stores will have to eat the entire cost of the part, which is already immensely high. This also doesn't help the consumer since any parts replaced by an IRP will be treated as out of warranty, even if it is a proper part and the repair job was done 100% properly. Literally every other supplier for other devices provides some form of proper warranty, even on the cheap garbage $10 displays, so its disappointing to see parts priced that high sold "as-is".
Most good quality suppliers like iFixit, Injured Gadgets, Mobile Defenders, etc already sell parts that are 90-99% of the quality of the OEM parts, they sell them at a significantly cheaper price and offer proper warranties on them. While the batteries are not that badly priced, the screens are highway robbery compared to everyone else.

There are also more in-depth concerns that have been pointed out by both Louis Rossmann and Jessa Jones and i highly recommend watching their videos about the subject as well. Since i haven been in the 3rd party game for a few years now, they'll have more up-to-date concerns related to the program.

Other details that are still in Limbo:

    • At this time we do not know if stores will be paying Exchange pricing or if it will be only stock pricing
    • At this time we do not know if stores will be allowed to use Apples shipping account or if you'll have to pay for shipping yourself to send parts back (Assuming it is indeed stock pricing)
    • At this time we don't know if stores will be allowed to stock inventory of screens, or if theyll have to order them in when needed
    • At this time we do not know if stores will have the ability to organize and create a mail-in repair
    • At this time we dont know if 3rd party stores will have access to RepairCal(Apples program used for Display and Battery Calibration), or maybe some stripped down version. Apple sends displays with TouchID preinstalled, which requires RepairCal to be run. iPhone X devices and newer require RepairCal to do the battery/haptic engine calibration as well.
    • At this time we do now know if you will have access to AST2 (Apples cloud diagnostics Suite) or GSX (Apples AASP-only Part Ordering and Repair Creation site). While apples IRP Link does say access to tools and such, it doesnt specify that they are the same ones that Apple and AASP's use.

Once I get more details, I'll add a supplementary post
