Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:06 AM PDT Goodnotes 5 (GN5) vs NotabilityHighlighting Highlighting is a more mature feature on GN5. The highlighted section automatically straightens itself; in contrast, you must wait for a small delay in Notability for the UI to detect your intent to have the highlighted region be straightened out. Winner: GN5 Writing GN5 has 3 pen styles – Ball Pen, Fountain Pen, and Brush Pen. In addition, you can adjust the thickness of the writing. The three variations are listed in that way as it progresses towards more whispy writing. Notability has two styles – Uniform vs Script (no actual names for this). It's very similar to GN5; however, there's not specific naming. It just shows the two variations, thickness, and colors. Winner: Notability. The reason for this is the simplicity of the UI. GN5 has more options, but you have to click to many things to navigate between the two. Erasing GN5 is unique wherein you can change the eraser function to ONLY remove written or highlighted text. Notability erases anything under the path of the mighty eraser. Both programs allow you to change the size of the eraser and adjust whether you want to have whole or partial erasure IE all highlighted section or only part of highlighted section. Winner: Draw. GN5 has a unique feature; however, isn't profound enough to provide an edge over the competition. Previously, partial erasure was not available to Notability; however, the recent updated rectified this. Opening Two Documents at Once This feature is unique to Notability. This allows you to open two documents at the same time (split screen but you can adjust the slider to dedicate more or less real estate to one slide or slide all the way to return to one screen). If you wanted to copy one slide from one document to another, you can do that relatively quickly. Another use would be to have the primary presentation on one side and a blank page for your own notes on the other side. GN5 has a different feature. Opening Multiple Documents at Once This feature is unique to GN5. You can open more than 1 document; however, they're split into tabs similar to Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Google Chrome. Technically they're all open, but you can't view them at the same time. Textboxes GN5 is quick, fast, and accurate. You can repeatedly tap and change section and GN5 responds very quickly. Consistent response regardless. Notability is slower overall; however, it has two text features. You can write in free text (wherever you like) or you can write from left to write like on normal pen and paper. Winner: GN5 Convert Written Text to Typed-Text This feature is unique to Notability where you draw a box around some scribbled words and it attempts to convert what was written via pencil into neat text. It's not always accurate, it depends on how legible your writing is; therefore, ymmv; however, overall, a very neat feature. Recording Voice with PDF This feature is unique to Notability wherein you can provide voice annotations associated with the PDF. I have not personally dabbled in this; however, I believe it is associated with the specific PDF slide. Not sure. YMMV. Drawing Shapes GN5 – This is a mature feature in GN5. You have to select the specific tool to draw shapes. Once clicked, the process is quick and smooth. You can draw a variety of shapes such as triangles, rectangles, circles, and even stars. GN5 – Faster with more variety of shapes; however, occasional interpretations of input is incorrect AND you need to click on the specific tool. You also cannot change the size of the shape once drawn. This feature is new to Notability. Sometimes rectangles become quadrangles instead; however, circles are not bad. Note: You must wait for a small delay by keeping the pencil in contact with the screen for the program to detect your intent to create the shape. However, one additional feature with Notability is once the shape is created, you can manipulate the size in length and width. Notability – Input delay and input occasionally misinterpreted; however, you can resize the shape. After the shape is drawn, you can reselect it later and manipulate the shape again after the fact. Winner: Depends GN5 – More shapes, but must click tool to create shape. EDIT & UPDATE: "Two additions to GN5 functionality: 1. GN5 does indeed have handwriting to text recognition: mark the text, long press, convert. 2. GN5 can also change the size and form of shapes (badly), marks the shape, long press, resize." - compliments to Lenin_cant_fly Notability – Draw shapes write away, but wait for delay for shape to be created; however, you can shrink/enlarge the drawn shape right away/after the fact unlike GN5 Search Text GN5 searches for the specific word but also the some surrounding text to provide context Notability only indicates the word on the slide so you have to personally view the PDF to identify for yourself whether that's your intended slide. However, one additional feature is that Notability will also search WRITTEN text completed by your Apple Pencil (or respective device). Winner: Slight edge to GN5 due to provided context to searched term; however, Notability searching written words added to the document is a very unique and helpful feature as well! Bookmarks Very fast and easy to create bookmarks on GN5. When you want to see all the pages with the bookmark, the viewing experience is much nicer on GN5. – You also get a decent preview of the page with the bookmark. Notability requires you to open a side menu on the top right, select the specific slide, then bookmark. – Overall, more cumbersome and slower. Winner: GN5. Templates GN5 – Handsdown has the best templates. They also provide the option to include additional variations in your templates. For example, they have Cornell, Legal, and etc. Very mature feature unique to GN5. - You get the choice from the moment you create a new document Notability has only one preset template for ALL NEWLY CREATED document/blank page; however, it can be customized after the fact. For example: Blank White Default page can be changed to black gridded paper of a specific size for the entire document. Winner: GN5. One of the unique selling features of GN5 Adding Additional Pages GN5 – Automatic addition of pages; however, you can any different TYPE of page going forward. For example: start with simple line paper, transition to 3 pages of 3 colomn pages, then do cornell notes. Want a new page, continue swiping left. Notability – Automatic addition of pages; however, you cannot add unique templates like GN5. Winner: GN5 – High customization. Adding and Editing Photos GN5 is very quick and smooth with specific icons to adjust size and rotate. Notability is more intuitive in that you use pinch to zoom to adjust the size and rotate the photograph right away. Winner: Notability due to ease of interface. Organization of Files Goodnotes 5 takes the folder approach that resembles the File Explorer on the PC Notability takes a different approach, specifically they use a tab system with one main heading and subfolders. Example: Main Folder is the Course say Anatomy, and subfolders are LECTURE MATERIAL and TUTORIAL MATERIAL and etcetera. You can have as many subfolders as you like. No Winner: Overall, this comes down to personal preference; however, I would give the advantage to Notability as it's very easy to see all the folders/subfolders quickly and rearrange things. That said, I would say Goodnotes 5 looks more aesthetically pleasing. Backing Up Documents & Cloud Storage GN5, for whatever reason, does not automatically backup your documents to your respective cloud storage. Also note, GN5 appears to no longer back up to Onedrive. It appears that GN5 ONLY backs up to the iCloud; therefore, you have to purchase iCloud storage. It is my understanding that GN4 was not like this. Notability allows you to back up your files/documents with whoever you like. Dropbox, iCloud, Onedrive, Google Drive, Box, WebDAV, and Box. In addition, back up in AUTOMATIC. In addition, you can back up the document as a Notability (NOTE) document, PDF, PDF & Recording, RTF (Rich Text Format), and RTF & Recording. Winner: Notability. No contest. UPDATE: Apparently, there is a BETA for GN5 available now where they are currently testing automatic back ups! Not certain if this is still limited to iCloud; however, it's a major improvement otherwise! Navigating through slides GN5 – Slide right to left, or up and down. You can change this in the settings on the right. Notability – Scroll up and down Edit: Corrected scroll function of GN5. Thanks Charly7120 Final Thoughts:Goodnotes 5: Fantastic customization with the use of templates. UI is occasionally clunky with the addition of additional steps and presses. Furthermore, the lack of automatic back ups is a pretty big negative which is further hindered by limiting the back up to the iCloud only.
UPDATE: Goodnote 5 BETA is available where they are presently trialing automatic back-ups. Notability: The interface is simple and straightforward but sacrifices the ability to customize the document with the inability to add additional unique templates. Notability does provide some unique features that separates itself from the competition by having the ability to view two different documents at the same time, having automatic back up (a feature removed from GN5 – don't know why) and have additional partners to back up the documents to (Google, DropBox, and iCloud to name a few).

Using iPadOS are you using webpages more then apps ? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 05:38 AM PDT I have found that since using iPadOS that I am using the webpages on safari more then I use their respective apps. The main one is that I have noticed this change personally is with YouTube, and FaceBook. I personally like this because it limits the amount of apps/notifications I have but also makes it feel more like a laptop. Is everyone else finding the same thing or is it just me ? If I have an Android phone, is it possible to send and receive texts through my iPad? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:08 AM PDT How do I do this? I have an non-jailbroken iPad but I would be okay with jailbreaking if that is the only way to do this. [link] [comments]
11-inch iPad Pro or Samsung Galaxy Tab S6? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:06 PM PDT I'm looking to get a tablet for college and I'm having a hard time deciding between the Galaxy Tab S6 or the 11-inch iPad Pro. My main use cases for the tablet are for notetaking/scratch paper and media consumption. Currently I have a 13-inch Macbook Pro and an OnePlus 7 Pro; I'm not trying to replace my Macbook with either tablet (although it'd be nice to use the tablet as a laptop in a pinch) but I'm including this because I'm sure there are nice integrations between the iPad and the Macbook. I've heard that the tablet experience on an iPad is generally so much better than any android offerings, but it's so much more expensive. With Best Buy's preorder bonuses, the cost of the Tab S6 + S-Pen + Keyboard cover is less than the cheapest 11 inch iPad Pro (just the tablet), and if I were getting the iPad I'd definitely get the Apple Pencil too. Furthermore, as a CS major, https://www.linuxondex.com/ looks super appealing. It'd be awesome to be able to code on a tablet, and to my knowledge, there's nothing similar on an iPad. I've also considered getting an iPad Air for a cheaper option, but I don't like the design as much as the other two and I'm trying to avoid any non-USB C devices at this point. After watching some reviews, I'm leaning towards the Galaxy Tab since I don't know if the benefits of the iPad are worth the ~$400 price difference, but I just wanna make sure I'm not making the wrong choice. Need an App that can mirror iPad to iPad Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT I know this may be a long-shot...But I'm desperately searching for an app and/or Apple feature that can screen-share iPad to iPad. Not Macbook to iPad. My goal is to have one "master" iPad that can share its screen to multiple other iPads. I have tried Reflector, AirServer, and ApoweMirror but none so far have been able to accomplish this. [link] [comments]

Any researchers on iPad? SPSS or other statistical analysis options? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:54 AM PDT Hi /r/iPad, I am using the Apple Air 3rd gen for University and I was wondering if anyone has found a workaround for statistical analysis software. This is usually only offered on Windows. Should I use a virtual desktop? Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments]
Was the bright spot problem fixed in 3rd gen iPad pros? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:36 AM PDT Had my 2017 10.5' exchanged at Apple store for this issue. A year later the replacement developed a spot too, although near the edge and less of an eyesore. I'm curious that did Apple eventually fix the problem in the 2018 model? I might buy next year's iPad Pro but don't want to deal with this again. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 06:42 AM PDT Hey, I'm in a position where I need to buy a new nib for my Apple Pencil 2 - Just wanted to see if anyone has tried out the Amazon UK knock off versions? They seem highly rated but the ratings on Amazon are far from the truth I usually find! Just want to see if it's worth me picking up some for £10 rather than the £19 Apple wants! Cheers [link] [comments]

Question about Outlook for iPad Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:48 PM PDT I have 4 Google accounts for different lines of work I do. I have set them all up on Outlook but I also can see all those calendars, including the Holidays events. As a result, each holiday is shown 4 times. There's the option to set a default calendar but can I hide all other calendars? Thanks. [link] [comments]
