2019 MacBook Pro Advice & Tips

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 09:52 PM PDT

Today my 2019 13 - inch MacBook Pro should be delivered in time for my first year University and I am eager to begin my journey coming from a Windows all my life.

That being said; I know absolutely nothing but the basics about a Mac and could use any and all advice.

Are there any tips for when I first unbox and start up my MBP? Or tips and advice in general for the MacBook for when I'm using it?

My hardware consists of: - 16GB memory - 256GB SSD storage

Any and all advice is appreciated, thank you!

    Can I use a Dell 130W USB-C charger with my MBP 2019?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:13 PM PDT

I have a Vega 20 i9 MBP 2019, and I've found that the battery percentage decreases under heavy load, even when connected to the 87w adapter that was included in the box. My question is, will there be any negative consequences with using a higher-wattage third party adapter with my MBP?

    Macbook Pro 2019 Model

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 11:43 PM PDT

I turned off my MacBook and turned it back on. However, when it booted up and I unlocked it, it gave me a message saying that I turned it off because of a problem. What does this mean? Also earlier, I was plugging it in when it was at 2% (I closed it when I saw my battery was so low), but it seems as if it had shut itself off. I think that was most likely because it was almost out of battery, but when I was pressing the power button (I am new to MacBook/Apple so there is a possibility I didn't hold it long enough for the first few times), it didn't turn on until I pressed and held it for the fourth time. I also moved where I plugged the charger in from the first thunderbolt port to the second before I pressed the button for the fourth time, but after I turned it on I moved it back to the first and it still charged. So, if there was an actual error with the MacBook I don't think that it was the battery- or it could've just been me being paranoid and not holding it for long enough. Could this be a sign for future issues?

Is a 2015 MacBook Pro still good in 2019?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 07:23 PM PDT

    It's a 250 ssd, i7 cpu 15 inch screen.

Looking at buying it for uni, (IT/programming)

    $1200 Australian.

Good idea or nah? Otherwise I would look for a 2017ish MacBook Air.

    RAM decision on 2019 MPB

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 04:02 PM PDT

hi all, yes I know and have read the tons of forum posts about ram amount. lots of conflicting back and forth comments. I understand how ram works for the most part but anyways. I recently got a new camera and plan to do some fairly light video and photo editing with the MacBook. I am already at home typing this on my 13' mbp 8gb RAM. I have seen the ram in activity monitor climb to about 6.70 GB do you guys think I should return and upgrade to 16gb? I am still in the 14 day return window. will I be ok running things like photoshop, Lightroom, iMovie and possibly premier, for the next years to come?

As a programmer, Macbook Air or Pro 2019? Or stick to PC?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:29 PM PDT

TLDR --> I'm primarily a maintenance web developer and test automator. MBA or MBP or stick to good o' PC?

I've been a Windows user all my life and I may give MacOS a shot since I also have an iPhone and iPad (and I love it). I'm not sure if the Air has enough horsepower for my work and I don't want to splurge on an overkill device either.

In my line of work, I travel frequently and its ridiculous to lug around my 3kg++ gaming laptop and charging brick with a battery life no longer than my lunch break (and getting funny looks from clients from my flashy thicc boi).

And since this is my personal gaming and work computer, I cannot tolerate relying on just a single machine to do both in case of failures.

Macbooks seems right up my alley for their OS simplicity and reliability, portability, durability, customer service, massive battery life, etc.

A little background on my usage:

    • My work currently involves running Docker containers (sometimes), Katalon test automation, hosting a web app (tomcat), opening 12+ maven projects in Netbeans, at least 10 tabs in a browser, misc company apps, and occasionally creating tutorial videos with Camtasia.
    • My current PC always consume no less than 8GB ram usage. Not sure if MacOS handles this better.
    • I can currently get by with 256GB storage with about 30% left to spare. Not frequently used files are relying on cloud storage.

So overall, should I gun for the MBA or MBP? Or probably forget it and go on with a cheap windows ultrabook?

Sorry for my long text. Thanks in advance Reddit.

Problem: Screen flickering in multiple applications

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:56 PM PDT

I recently got a new MacbookPro 15 inch 2019. It has the Radeon 555X and the notebook itself works really well. However I recently discovered several screen flickering cases that I can always reproduce. For example in VSCode when I switch a file tab very fast, the screen always flickers (sometimes even yellow Lol). I also had this behavior in Chrome but it never happened again and I would not know how to reproduce it. In many cases people just write "disable hardware acc. in all the apps where it happens". I know that this could (or will) help. But guys, is this just a bunch of software bugs or flaws in the UI framework that is used on top of macOS? Is there an open topic (also on apple's side) for such a thing?

Can I somehow test if it is a hardware issue? I still have warranty right now so I could get a new one if the GPU has an issue. Can I verify if its 100% fine?

    Thank you guys!

    Edit: Using Mojave 10.14.6

MacBook Pro 2019 base model - league of legends

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 09:05 AM PDT

    Hey all

I am looking to buy the base model of this year's MBP. My question is quite straightforward. I know Macs are not for gaming etc etc. I have a console and a PC so gaming isn't an issue. However, I am only interested in carrying the MBP around and if I find myself travelling for business and whatnot, the only game I tend to play is league and possibly OSU.

I know it can run the game no problems but my concern is the temperature as that model has a single fan and no dedicated GPU. Would it get too hot even on medium settings for those 2 light games?

I don't want to damage it over time.

How many GB for Windows partition?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:08 AM PDT

    Hey

A friend's kid wants to play Minecraft, PUBG and Fortnite on Windows but the last 2 don't work on macOS. Geforce Now looks cool but spots are full in the beta I guess.

They have a Macbook 2019 with 256GB of space. macOS takes like 70GB and how much would you need for Boot Camp to reserve for the Windows partition? 10GB Minecraft, 20GB Fornite, 30GB PUBG? How much for Windows itself?

Fair price to sell my macbook 2015

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:49 AM PDT

I have an early 2015 macbook pro , 128 gb ssd, 8 gb ram , 13 inch. I do not know the charging cycles but its not much. It is in very good shape and comes with original charger. I bought it used but I did not use it, always prefered to use my windows laptop since I find it easier to use (tbh I have always used linux/windows computers and not used to MacOS).

I am planning to sell it but I don't know what would be a fair price. I paid 970 usd a year ago.

I got an offer for 671 usd, would that be fair ? for reference I am based in Denmark.

MacBook shuts down while it is on sleep

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:17 AM PDT

For a couple of months now (May or June), every time my laptop is on sleep it ends up shutting down and restarting. I recently did the pmset-g. I saw that auto power off was on 1 instead of 0 so I did the command for that and it's now on 0. But before I did this, underneath sleep I saw 1 and then this message: "sleep prevented by Google Chrome, Coreaudiod, AddressBookSourceSync. After the reset, I don't see this anymore, but is there anything I can do to make sure that doesn't pop up again? I also see hibernate mode at 3, display sleep at 2, autopoweroffdelay has 28800, and lidwake at 1. Do you guys have any suggestions for me after the command I did for autopoweroff? I know that some folks say that it can be battery but I checked the battery condition and it still says normal. Before this, I did smc and the other resets but it didn't change anything, but should I do these again after I messed with the audiopoweroff? I also have windows on my Mac with boot camp, so could this be impacting why?
