    Apple Ecosystem Appreciation Post

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 08:31 PM PDT

Hi all, I barely post on Reddit but I've been sucked into the Apple Ecosystem and I feel as if I need to show my love somewhere else than my brain.

So for the longest time (about 4 years or so) I only owned an iPhone (5c and 6 in this period of time). I loved the thing and it was my daily driver. I used it for productivity, health, games, social media, and so much more. Little did I know how much more functionality would open up as I bought more devices.

After those 4 years of only having an iPhone, I got an Apple Watch Series 1 around Christmas time. As someone who extremely active and does things such as Track and Cross Country, I was in love once again. I was fascinated by how it worked seamlessly with my phone. I loved being able to access all of my activity data straight from my phone, receiving text messages and emails on my wrist, using complications to check things quickly, and the list goes on. Handoff also worked fantastically, from reading a text message to writing a note on the Bear app, I could pick up where I left off straight on my phone.

About a year after getting my Apple Watch, I was able to get AirPods which changed my life once again. My absolute favorite feature about the AirPods is how fast they charge and how long they last. The sound quality may be about the same as the stock Apple Earphones, but having wireless earphones that last 3-4 hours and charge in 15 minutes is fascinating to me. I also learned that I can use them with only my watch, so I was able to go running without my phone to play music. This encouraged me to get an Apple Music subscription a few months later.

At the beginning of this month (June 2019), I got my first MacBook. At this point, owning an iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook is the definition of continuity. It's so satisfying to use your iPhone to unlock your Apple Watch and using your Apple Watch to unlock your MacBook. It's so satisfying to get your messages and calls on all 3 devices (but annoying at some points). It's so satisfying having everything synced through iCloud where you can access almost everything from Music to Photos. I purchased 50GB of iCloud storage just because of how well it works. It's so satisfying to Airdrop from your files from your phone straight to your MacBook and vice versa. The universal clipboard has been a time saver in many situations. I don't think I can live without any of this anymore.

Lastly, today I got my Apple TV 4th Gen and I'm impressed once again. I can stream my MacBook and Phone directly to my TV using AirPlay? I can use Siri to access all of the channels, movies, and shows I have downloaded? I can use my Phone as a remote for my TV? I can pick up on TV shows and movies directly from the TV App on my iPhone and soon my MacBook? It's just amazing how everything works together in the Apple Ecosystem, there isn't a second where I feel isolated to one device at all times.

As for future plans, I really want a HomePod since my TV's speaker absolutely sucks plus the Siri functionality makes the purchase worth it. After seeing the new Apple Carplay update, I really want to be able to access Apple Music and maps directly from my car. As a digital artist, I've been wanting to try the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro combo since I've heard so many great things. Lastly, I want to invest in more HomeKit enabled devices to take full advantage of Siri and other features.

    Is this what Apple wanted?

Apple needs to improve Keychain - Here’s how

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 03:30 PM PDT

Firstly, the improvements made to the password manager on iOS and macOS over the past few software iterations have been great however it's still being held back by a few limitations.

I think it needs to do two main things in the next iOS/macOS:

    1. Split the iOS functionality into a separate application. Call it keychain or whatever but splitting it into another application would make it far easier to get to rather than menu diving in settings. In addition to this, it would have different menus and functions and it could then receive new updates without needing to do an entire iOS update.

    2. Secondly and most importantly: let us use the macOS keychain with other web browsers and applications. This is a current pain point with the macOS keychain and really limits the user. This has become worse since Safari extensions are such a pain in the ass to develop and maintain compared to Firefox and chromium browsers so most of the decent ones are not available. This means that a lot of users who want to install add-ons like NoScript, uBlock Origin, https everywhere etc. have to either jump through hoops to install or just flat out can't.

Does anyone else have any ideas or want to have a discussion as to why they should/shouldn't do these things to improve keychain?
