I totally get why Apple wanted to pull off AirPower

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:14 PM PDT

Following Apple's statement that they cancelled AirPower, I looked around and pulled the trigger on a Nomad Base Station (in part based on recommendations around here, in part based on lists from various sites).

Now don't get me wrong, it lets me charge my iPhone and AirPods side by side overnight while I sleep, which is all I wanted, and it's kind of cool that I can do it when I think of it. But man, finding the sweet spots on the thing is a bit of an art, and I'm sure Apple just hated having their users deal with this sort of experience. It's inelegant.

I get it. I don't know if we'll ever see something close to AirPower, but I get what Apple wanted to do, and it's a shame they weren't able to pull it off.

The state of Apple's RAM and SSD Pricing.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 08:30 AM PDT

I know that everyone knows Apple's overpriced vs the general market but I just want to point out how absolutely out of hand it's gotten at this point.

Let's start with the cost of RAM in the Mac mini. It's the classic example, and one of the only things you can sort of avoid getting screwed on by upgrading it yourself. But even if you do upgrade it yourself, you're still getting screwed.

Since it costs $200 to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB and $400 to upgrade from 16 to 32 I'm going to have the list price of the 8GB modules as $200. Remeber, upgrade means they keep the original 8GB and that effectively gets deducted from your cost. So for Apple we have

    Capacity Price $Price/GB
    8GB $200 $25
    16GB $400 $25
    32GB $800 $25
    64GB $1400 $18.75

Okay, what about retail? These prices are for SO-DIMM DDR4 2666mhz ram from Corsair

    Capacity Price $Price/GB
    8GB $60 $7.50
    16GB $98 $6.12
    32GB $190 $5.94
    --- --- ---

So aside from the 64GB kit, which Corsair doesn't have a comparable set of, you're getting charged $140, $302, and $610 extra respectively. Bar in mind these are also consumer prices, so they already have extra costs for packaging and margins for both the supplier, the distributor, and the retailer.

    So what about SSDs?

    Capacity Price Price/GB
    256 $200 $0.78
    512 $400 $0.78
    1TB $800 $0.78
    2TB $1400 $0.68

    Compared to Samsungs 970 EVO

    Capacity Price Price/GB
    250 $100 $0.40
    500 $150 $0.30
    1TB $293 ~$0.30
    2TB $530 $0.27

All of Apple's SSDs are at least 2x the price of a reasonable comparison consumer drive, and the price difference only gets worse with higher capacities.

Now there's an argument to be made for the SSDs that Apple's controller, the T2 chip, can somewhat justify the extra cost since it is actually a bit faster than any of the SSDs I've listed above. But since the price of the SSDs scales so linearly, I'm not sure the price of the T2 is even included in the cost of the SSD. The prices double from 256 to 512 and again from 512 to 1TB. Either Apple isn't including the cost of the T2 in the price of the SSDs or you are actually getting screwed even worse at higher capacities since the cost of the T2 chip is the same regardless of how much storage you go with.

I know this isn't new. But as the rest of the PC industry continues to bring prices down further and further with RAM and Storage, Apple doesn't make any adjustments to their own prices to match the change in supply cost and pockets the difference. This could be understandable if what they were charging were anywhere close to a fair deal, but even when SSD and RAM costs were higher (and in the case of the Mac Mini, they were never much higher than they are now during the 2018 Mac Mini's lifetime) they were still nowhere near acceptable.

I really want to keep buying Apple hardware. I love OSX, and keyboard issues aside, I love the hardware that Apple makes. But I cannot justify getting gouged like this on the essentials. There's no option to buy a Mac Mini without RAM, so no matter what I'm getting screwed out of over $100. I can't justify that anymore.

AirPods 2nd Generation: The H1 chip helps with battery life, but what about long-term battery longevity?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 11:19 AM PDT

I've read a lot of reports about 1st Generation AirPods not holding up too well after a few years because the Li-Ion batteries wear out. Given that, as far as we know, the 2nd Gen versions use the same batteries do you think it's possible that their overall longevity would be greater due to the H1 chip?

An "ebike" exercise that bases calories burned just on heart rate and not on speed. This is for those of us who have a battery-assisted bike and get inaccurate calorie data because you've gotta use the regular bike, which (I'm pretty sure) bases the calories burned on heart rate and speed.

    Edit:

And letting Siri work for certain things (timers, starting/ending excersizes) without needing to be connected to the internet.

TIL you can click any empty spot next to the "sort by _______" dropdown to scroll back to the top in the macOS mail app.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:09 AM PDT

Click in this space. It's similar to tapping the status bar on iOS. It's especially useful when you search for an old email and want to return to the top, since exiting the search leaves you scrolled to the position of that email.

I switched over from Windows a year and a half ago and love discovering these little things, although I do sometimes wish something like this was more apparent. I could've saved so much time endlessly scrolling to the top.

    iCloud mail, updates and thoughts.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:29 PM PDT

I have been bouncing back and forth with Gmail and iCloud mail for months now and like certain things about both. Gmail has a lot more functionality but iCloud integrates with Apple ecosystem really well. (I am completely in the Apple ecosystem)

What are peoples opinions on the two services and do you think that Apple will ever focus on iCloud to update it to compete with Gmail in regards to functionality?
