Update: Wife dropped her MacBook Air into the bathtub

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 05:09 PM PST

Wife dropped MacBook Air into soapy tub, and it immediately turned off. We put it in rice for a week, while out of town. Just got back - and it works. Perfectly in fact. No notable changes.

I know we're extremely lucky. Just wanted to post an update.

Trying to install Lion on old Macbook (Computer cannont be verified error)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 03:10 PM PST

Older friend of mine is trying to sell his MacBook, appears to be a 2006 MacBook Pro.

Whenever you go to install the OS and it ask you to sign in to download from the App Store it gives an error saying "Your device or computer could not verified. Contact support for assistance." The computer has no OS on it atm so the fixes ive seen online or on youtube i cant even try as they all have you going into the file system and deleting certain files.
Any thoughts of suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Mac is making annoying noise

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:49 PM PST

Hi everyone. I just got my brother's old 2012 MacBook Pro. It works beautifully, but it makes a pretty loud noise that I'm trying to figure out what it is. I'm thinking maybe it's the HD, but I don't really know. Can you guys help me figure it out and see if it's fixable?

    Thank you!!

Connecting external monitor to MacBook pro 2018

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:03 PM PST

I was thinking to buy the LG 27uk650 and really thought it's a winner untill someone here in Reddit told me you can't get any other retina display except the LG ultrafine 5k for 27" monitors. He said macOs scale retina for 200% or standard %100. Anything in between will be scaled somewhere in the middle as in %172 for example, and that does not render the fonts as crisp and clear as it should.

Looking at the imac display for example or MacBook pro display dividing the screen resolution by the screen diagonal size you get around 200-220 PPI. Only the 27" 5k screen can get that PPI while a 4k screen that is also 27" will be somewhere around 160ppi.

is this true?on a 27" 4k screen, the text is not as clear or it's little blurry as opposed on the MacBook pro screen or imac screen ?

That would be my major question now!

Older iMac has self-assigned IP address, cannot connect to the internet

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:33 PM PST

Okay Reddit, hopefully you can help because I've tried every trick I could find and I just can't solve the issue.

My wife has an older 2007 (okay, ancient in computer years) iMac, running on OSX 10.9.5 -For what she needs it for (email and Facebook and listening to Spotify) it works like a champ. Today, out of the blue, it suddenly became unable to connect to the internet. After resetting both my modem and Airport Extreme, the issue persisted, even though other computers on the network (including the one I'm currently posting from) connected without any issues. My wife's computer, however, gave this message when I went to the Network window from System Preferences, "Internet not working due to self-assigned IP address"

Things I have done so far: Renewing the DHCP lease, manually creating an IPV4 address, creating a new location in the Network configuration screen, going to Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration and deleting the configuration files: (com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, com.apple.network.identification.plist, com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist, NetworkInterfaces.plist, preferences.plist) and restarting the computer. No matter what I do, that little bastard just comes back to mock me with the message telling me it has the IP address 169.xx and will not be able to connect to the internet.

Nothing has changed on my network configuration since this started. It was working just fine with its configuration as of yesterday, but literally overnight this problem reared its ugly head and refuses to go away. I've Googled enough that I'm now just finding the same "solutions" on different pages, and none of them have resolved the issue or even pointed at what could have caused it. I'm hoping that someone with a fresh perspective might be able to give me some ideas as to what the problem could be and what else I could do to resolve it.

5.1 Surround Sound with Mac Mini for Netflix, HBO etc

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 11:19 AM PST

I have a Mac mini with HDMI out to a receiver with 5.1 speaker setup. Despite the MIDI always resetting to stereo, I'm able to get 5.1 sound using VLC or other native apps when configured correctly.

However any streaming through a browser results in stereo output. As I understand it, this is a browser limitation and nothing can really be done. The osx version of chrome lacks try-supported-channel-layouts flag that I've seen suggested and, regardless, most common streaming site like Netflix only support stereo in the browser but don't offer anything in the app store.

Is there a way to access common streaming sites natively (ie through a 3rd party app) or other workaround?

    My mac is being stupid...

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 06:50 PM PST

So, I got water on my mac keyboard, and I dried it up using a paper towel. Sometimes, people say to open the mac and tip it to drain the water out. My brother told me not to do that, because macbooks have a thing that prevents water damage in the keyboard. I listened to him, and I shouldn't have. I just left my mac there. I tried using my mac, and it would only let me use certain keys, and when I used some of them, they would just keep typing the key even when it wasn't being pressed. I tried some things, and I eventually got a black screen with white letters that looked like a giant code. I got it to go away, but the keyboard still doesn't work. It's been maybe 8-10 hours since the water got into the keyboard. Is it too late to tip the mac? If it is, what else can I do??? Please help, it's from school, and if I don't get it fixed by Monday, they have to send it to another state to fix it.

    Flashing Folder MacBook Pro

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 06:49 PM PST

Hi everyone, I have a MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013. I recently upgraded and wiped the hard drive. Just today, while I was planning to reinstall macOS, it just showed a flashing folder with a question mark on boot. And Command + R now goes to internet recovery instead of normal recovery. I looked online but most of the solutions seem to be for the older MacBook Pros with the hard drive cable. Could the SSD in mine failed? Or is this a motherboard issue? (I ran through internet recovery (OS X 10.9 lol) but the SSD didn't show up). Any help is appreciated.

2017 Ipad Pro Wifi Chip / Antenna shot within 14 months?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 06:12 PM PST

I baby this thing, and right before I got to the airport to travel home this thing was absolutely fine. Finally got home a few hours ago and have been trying to figure it out as the traveling of 48 hours was supposed to give me enough time to get my work done before my deadline tomorrow... (not to mention entertain the kids... it's been a long 48 hours lol)

Anyways, called apple support about 2 times, each rep is saying about the same thing, "looks like the chip or the antenna is dead". One rep said replacement would be about $100 the other said replacement is about $500, I have an appointment tomorrow with an Apple Store but they are a good hour away from us and I'd like to go in feeling prepared. I've never heard of this happening and I find it odd that it's happening on such a new device.

Does this seem about right? The ipad is literally 14 months old, and I'm feeling really cheated as I was planning on investing in this Ipad when I bought it to take me for a few years. What am I doing wrong? Any tips or suggestions you can think of?

I've reset network settings, turned airplane mode off and on, updated software, etc.

Cannot create sixth partition on 32GB USB

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 12:05 PM PST

Please have a look at the pic. I am creating a bootable macOS installation USB with Mojave, Sierra etc. While everything works when used for macOS installation, I cannot create a sixth partition on the Lion partition with Disk Utility. I created this USB by adding new partition, shrink the previous partition and then create the new macOS. It works fine until the Lion partition.

    https://i.imgur.com/Q1yWLyM.jpg

Note the 4.85GB is Sierra but it doesn't show the partition name in photo.

I solved it by using Paragon Hard Drive Manager.

Trouble Removing Activation Lock from Apple Watch

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 05:51 PM PST

Hi! So I sold an Apple Watch series 1 - I wiped it but didn't know I also had to remove it from my account. After selling it, the buyer contacted me about activation lock, where I went into iCloud and removed it from my device. It no longer shows up on Find my iPhone and is not listed under my devices, but the buyer says Activation Lock is still active.

Is there anything I can do besides meeting up and re-adding / re-removing it from my account and seeing if close proximity helps?

Can someone zip me a plugin folder from Chrome?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 05:13 PM PST

Long story short, I've got a super old macmini that needs to stay on 10.8.5, but after a recent clean install of chrome, one of the plugins required for netflix to work won't download because of my OS version.

For the record Netflix does work on 10.8.5 chrome (49) I'm just missing some components that chrome won't download anymore.

Can someone jump into library/application support/google/chrome and throw the whole WebvineCDM folder into a zip or google drive for me? You'd really be doing me a solid. Thanks.

P.s. the WebvineCMD folder isn't anything sketchy. It's just the plugin that netflix uses for DRM.

How/can you get the video scrubbing tool onto the touch bar in Chrome?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 01:12 PM PST

Seems like youtube automatically triggers the scrubbing tool to appear on the touch bar in SAFARI but in Chrome this doesn't happen? Is there a way to customize it to appear for chrome youtube as well? I mean the safari scrubbing tool freezes youtube for me so I guess it might not be that helpful anyway but I figured I'd ask anyway.

    Thanks!

Help with damaged MacBook Pro 13

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 01:41 PM PST

Hello fellow Mac users. Today I fell and dropped my backpack with my macbook pro 13 (2017). The lid got pretty damaged and misaligned, and the sensor that detects if the lid is closed stopped working. Thankfully, the rest of the machine seems ok. How much should I expect a repair to cost? Is it even worth it?

I don't know if this is the right sub for this, and I'm sorry if it's not.

Thank you very much in advance.

Can this CPU be upgraded and is it worth while?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 01:19 PM PST

My brother has recently installed an SSD and RAM to bring life to his Mac which had a failed hard drive. This is a new experience for him, and he's been having fun installing the hardware. He was asking if it would be possible to upgrade the CPU since I make my own desktop builds, but I honestly have no idea for a Mac and googling is yielding no quick answers for his particular mac. His birthday is coming up, and since he's been having so much fun with this, I thought this would be a good gift. Does it make sense to upgrade this, and what CPU should I buy him?

    Here are his specs:

    • High Sierra 10.13.6
    • imac 27 inch late 2009
    • 2.8GHz Intel core i7
    • 12 GB 1070 MHz DDR3
    • ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

Progress bar stuck on the CMD - R

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:04 AM PST

Suddenly my PC would not start. It was stuck on the progress bar. I googled and found out I had to use CMD - R, it's also stuck on that progress bar. I've also tried ALT - CMD - R (internet boot). I've also tried safe mode. It's stuck on the loading bar all the time. What should I do to access my Mac? It's an early 2015 Macbook 12".

How to connect iPad to MacBook without cables?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST

So my MacBook doesn't have usb-c and my new iPad is usb-c. I want to pair it on iTunes, but to do so wirelessly I need first the "first pair" to be with a cable, so what other options do I have to pair my iTunes with my iPad for the first time without cables?

Obviously I could buy a dongle or something but why would I do that if I can do it wirelessly via some help from reddit?
