Luna Display vs Duet? Discovered a hack that let me choose a winner: Duet + Screens

    Posted: 09 Jan 2019 09:38 AM PST

What disappointed me about both Duet and Luna was that neither option would work in split screen mode. (I really wanted to be able to take some handwritten notes while working on a particular mac app.) While messing around, I accidentally found a trick that not only lets Duet work in split screen mode but also allows me to enter text using handwriting DIRECTLY into mac apps. To do this, you need another app called Screens.

For those who aren't familiar with these apps:

    • Luna Display is a little dongle that lets you use your iPad as a second monitor.
    • Duet Display is a similar software-based solution.
    • Both apps can be run wirelessly or wired.
    • Until just recently, Luna seemed to be the superior wireless solution because their hardware approach allowed you to take advantage of your laptop's graphics processing.
    • Recently, Duet released an update that changed how it works. They now use Airplay and can also take advantage of hardware graphics acceleration.
    • Since that update, the two apps seems pretty comparable to me.
      • In terms of performance, I've done some informal comparisons (both wired and wirelessly), and I can barely tell a difference between the two apps.
      • Luna advantages:
        • Truly full screen on my 12.9" iPad pro. Duet shows an empty black area on the bottom.
        • You can start wirelessly. I might be wrong, but I think you have to start wired with Duet and then go wireless.
      • Duet advantage:
        • Easier to connect to because your iPad becomes an actual Airplay device
        • I seemed to encounter quite a few times when Luna inexplicable disconnected. It seemed to me that the Duet's airplay approach disconnected less and reconnected more easily, possibly because they're relying on apple's code on the Mac side rather than rolling their own code like Luna had to.
        • Way cheaper
      • (To be fair to Luna, they have a beta of an update out that supposedly improves performance further. It's on Testflight, but I haven't tried it yet.)
    • Screens is a VNC app that lets you remotely control a mac from your iPad.
      • Unlike Duet or Luna, your iPad does not become a new external monitor with screens. Instead, your iPad mirrors what one (or all) of the monitors connected to your Mac is displaying.
      • It's a really nice app. Not only can you can control your home mac from your iPad even if you're not on the same network, but it even has a tool that helps you configure your network so that you can connect to it remotely.
      • Unlike Duet or Luna, it has true support for split screen mode
      • Allows you to use your iPad's native keyboard for your Mac apps
        • If you like to enter text with handwriting, this is really nice because you can use something like the Mazec handwriting keyboard to write directly into apps on the Mac side.
      • $20

So, here's how to set it up:

    1. Start up Duet normally
      1. This creates a new airplay monitor on your Mac that corresponds to your iPad
    2. Launch Screens
    3. Choose the Duet monitor from the menu in the bottom right of screens. (optional)

It seems that Screens is able to take over the Airplay monitor that Duet set up for your iPad, as long as you launch it before iOS hibernates Duet.

Here's a video showing this being set up and then using handwriting on both sides:

Note that if you leave the Screens app for a while, you'll need to launch Duet again before you open Screens. If both Screens and Duet are inactive, the Airplay monitor will eventually disappear. (I've tried this trick with Luna as well, and it does also work. But after about a little bit, iOS hibernates the Luna app and you lose the monitor.)

Anyone else excited for real Photoshop on the iPad coming sometime this year?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2019 12:25 PM PST

The main reason I'm super excited is just to use a proper Font/Typography Tool on the iPad for my work.

    How about you all?

It’s 2019 and Google apps still not updated for iPad Pro 2018

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 06:41 PM PST

Last November I bought my first iOS device - iPad Pro 11". It was only a few weeks since the release and it was understandable, that most apps weren't using the new aspect ratio. Months went by and it's 2019 already, a lot of apps got updated, but besides Chrome and News, non of the Google apps use full screen. The fact that YouTube (and Movies) still hasn't been updated is particularly infuriating.
I'm new to iOS, has Google always treated this platform so poorly? If yes, why?

P.S. Why is there still no PiP support in YouTube?!

    Apple Pencil as a Mouse?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2019 06:29 AM PST

As someone who is not an avid drawer (Or a drawer at all), has anyone leveraged the Apple Pencil as a mouse or used it for other functionality? I wanted to get thoughts if this is a viable option.

A couple new cases I found that I haven't seen mentioned yet!

    Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:16 AM PST

Hey all, to my recollection I haven't seen these cases posted yet and I just came across them. Dux Plus and Dux Atlas by STM Goods. The Dux is heavy duty and seems to have great drop protection, where as the Atlas is a little more vulnerable with a more professional look. Both support pencil charging and both have two viewing angles. I still personally chose the Zugu Muse case, and I'm waiting for that to ship out.

Anyway, thought I'd share these with everyone who is stuck deciding on a case!

Best iPad photo editor w/ extension to remove blemishes

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:19 PM PST

Okay I hope there's just a super simple answer for this, but after a fair amount of googling, I didn't really get the answer I was looking for. I have a great selfie of my wife and I today on a chairlift. Turns out I have a piece of food in my teeth. I just want to be able to open the picture in photos, and use an extension to remove the food. This feature is available in Pixelmator, but not their extension. Help me out!

    Advice on Buying Used iPad

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 08:09 PM PST

Howdy y'all. New to the iPad world here.

I'm looking to buy a iPad Pro 10.5" off another person off Facebook and the model that's for sale is a WiFi+Cellular. I'm concerned about being scammed and whatnot. How can you check if the cellular component still works? Any additional advice on buying iPads off another person? Is there anything I need to check before buying?

    Thanks in advance!
