Leaning out Time Machine without deleting all of it.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 03:53 PM PST

I have a 500GB drive for Time Machine and it's nearly full. It's all Sierra and I've upgrade to High Sierra.

I want to use the same drive for my High Sierra backup, but don't want to lose all my Sierra backups. I only need one copy and my Sierra is full backups is only about 200GB.

I don't want to restore everything, delete the backup and start a new backup. I'd like to go into the backup and trim off all the old versions and only keep the latest versions.

I could take a risk (I have active copies of everything) and wipe the backup, then start a new one, but I'd rather just split the backup drive so that 300GB is now used for High Sierra and the other 200GB is used for old Sierra backups.

Is there anyway to go in and prune off "dead limbs" in Time Machine?

What exactly is the "system" category in storage?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 02:08 AM PST

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) running macOS Mojave.

When I check the storage in my "about this mac" category, I see a breakdown of the space usage on the onboard Flash Storage. I see categories that make sense to me, like Apps, Documents, Mail, Photos, Music,.., but I also see this category labeled as "System". I understand that this might be the OS, but the size of this space is rather large and seems to fluctuate as well, which makes me think it is something else other than than the OS.

I have time machine enabled, and I tried to remove the local snapshots using the tmutil command in the terminal :

    tmutil listlocalsnapshotdates / |grep 20|while read f; do tmutil deletelocalsnapshots $f; done

which seemed to have worked, in terms of removing the local time machine snapshots, but failed, in the terms of reducing the size of the "system" category in storage.

I'm not sure how to reduce this "system" category, other than a clean install of mojave which I would rather not do, simply because of the time it would take, and it does not seem to be a sustainable solution. Any advice on how to reduce the system storage will be greatly appreciated,

    thank you in advance,

    A.

Thoughts on Hombrew? (and should I start using it?)

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 07:13 PM PST

    Hi!

I was looking into a package manager called Homebrew, and considered installing it. I've read things about it, both good and bad, and would like reddit's opinion on it.

Should I install and start using Homebrew (at least for stuff such as Composer, Ruby, PostgreSQL, etc.)? Also, please put why or why not.

net session_mac is not optimized for your Mac and needs to be updated

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 12:03 AM PST

I got this message when I restarted my MacBook just now. My understanding is that this Akamai utility is used by Netflix and other streaming services as well as Adobe. I'm curious if there's a 64-bit update available or plans to release one. Or do I really even need it in the first place?

Hi, I have been experiencing some issues on video playback on YouTube, twitch etc. The videos fast forwards at times and doesn't play properly as it should.

Does anyone have solution as to why or how to fix this?

I would always need to restart to fix it and it is very frustrating.

    Please help!!

Does Mac Mail mail download to every machine that accesses it?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 07:58 AM PST

I've been debating switching to Mac Mail. I was using Google Inbox, which Google is now killing and forcing me to switch to Gmail. Gmail is by no means terrible, but I think, ideally, I would like a separate app that isn't in-browser and isn't monetizing my data. Anyway, I have a gmail account and an icloud account. What I don't get is what happens when I check my mail on my iMac and my Macbook and my iPhone? Does mail download to each device? If I delete downloaded and archived mail, does it delete that item from each device? There seems to be no way to keep mail only on gmail's server (and I'm not sure yet if I will completely switch over to icloud mail). I don't mind it downloading UNLESS mail curation doesn't sync between devices. I hope that makes sense. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

After turning on filevault, stuck on login loading for many hours. Normal?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 07:40 AM PST

Basically I turned on file vault then a short while later turned the computer off and on. Now after entering password it has a loading bar and has been stuck on the last bit for many hours. I reset it once but now I'm just letting it run.

    Is this

    A. A normal function of filevault, where the process for it to be finished is running in the background and I can just go to sleep and wake up with it working

    Or

    B. An unusual problem, and I need to factory reset

Mojave upgrade issue with copy/paste of charts

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 09:29 AM PST

After doing an upgrade for a member they're no longer able to copy paste graphs properly. The chart copies but not the actual data. Everything I've found online so far is about another copy/paste bug where it doesn't work at all. Anyone have any ideas? I've reinstalled office and verified it wasn't an issue with copying into keynote. I tested the same file on my Mojave mac and c/p functions work properly including the data. I really don't want to have to rebuild the system but it is an option.

What/where is purgeable? Cloned OS drive and have 8GB difference. Boot clone and it says 6GB is purgeable, but can't find it on original.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 03:12 PM PST

So I just installed a new OS (High Sierra), updated everything, installed major items and then cloned it using CCC. So I go to verify the clone and notice a size difference (51GB vs 43GB). So I boot to the clone (43GB) and it says the original source has 6.xGB purgeable. So I go back to the original and there's nothing in the trash.

    Q. Where is this purgeable stuff and how do I purge it?

Just as a note, my prior OS (Sierra) was about 77GB, with some 30GB hidden somewhere. I'd copy something and it would report X GB but took up much more. I guess CCC doesn't take the purgeable.

[HELP] Printing in Black&White makes color text invisible

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 10:51 AM PST

    Hello guys,

I came across a problem while printing school documents on my MBP. I selected to print the documents in B&W and all the headers that were in yellow, red or blue color simply did not show up in the printed version. I thought it was caused by the documents so I tried to print them on my Windows PC and there, those colors were correctly converted to black color. I remember that I used to print documents on my MBP all the time in the past on macOS High Sierra and something like this had never ocurred before, which makes me thinking it might be something macOS Mojave related.

Anyone knows how to correct this issue?

Thank you all in advance for any helpful advice.

How can I filter URLs from the Reddit redesign on Safari?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 08:10 AM PST

As the final RES update for Safari is becoming more and more cumbersome, and there are some decent features in the redesign that RES doesn't offer, I've been trying to get away from using old Reddit and sticking to the redesign.

My biggest problem, however, is there seems to be no way to filter URLs. For example, using RES, I have probably two dozen URLs filtered out that are sites whose reporting I either don't care about or don't trust. Using the redesign, the subs I set those filters up for are practically unusable.

Does anyone know of any way to accomplish this on the redesign, whether through an extension or some hidden user preference on Reddit I've somehow missed?
