If you're a creative deciding between the 11" vs. 12.9"

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:41 AM PST

I've been going back and forth between the two for quite some time, but finally made a well-thought choice. I chose the 12.9" after a lot of research, 3 store visits, countless video reviews, and reading some Reddit discussions. I hope my evaluation process might help some others in similar situations make a decision. I have never used an iPad for designing prior, but the Apple Pencil and seeing what Procreate and the Affinity apps are capable of, I couldn't resist anymore.

The main reasons I chose the 12.9" was:

    - canvas size to draw, without feeling squished or constrained

    - mostly will be using it at my home office, or sitting at a coffee shop with it set down on a table or flat surface

    - split screen is much more practical, and using a reference photo for drawing in split screen is going to be incredible

    - buying it for design business purposes; not as a toy to watch videos/games on the couch/bed, though we all will probably do that here & there and heck, a bigger screen is usually better

    - honestly, it's so small when I initially went to the Apple store to play with them, I walked right up to the 12.9" model and thought it was the 11" (before I really looked around). At that point, I looked at the 11" and said holy shit that's tiny. Pretty much there was no turning back from that.

Some other comments I have read that have stuck in my head:

    - the 11" feels more like a rectangle, and looks & feels best used in portrait orientation

    - 12" feels a little more square, and looks & feels best in landscape orientation

    - for myself and other creatives; take into account the size of the side bars within some programs. Like many, I'm excited for Photoshop to come to iPads in 2019. I imagine those layer panels and side bars will take up quite a bit of screen real estate when opened. That was enough to scare me away from trying to "save" money getting the 11". There is nothing worse in my opinion than regretting a large purchase choice and feeling like you always want to kick yourself in the ass.

Think about how & why you will use the iPad. Think about it being an investment for designing and giving you a special tool that is loaded with endless potential that maybe a lot of designers don't even use. That helped justify spending a little extra on something that I can rely on not limiting me due to size.

Hope this is helps for food for thought and you can make a more educated/future proof decision!

Artists who use the 11 inch pro model, do you find that screen size to be comfortable for your artistic purposes?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:07 AM PST

I draw comics as a hobby and would like to be able to start doing this entirely from an iPad. I understand that the 12.9 is the more ideal screen size for this sort of thing, but my art is pretty simple and realistically I'd be using this iPad to a large extent for simple media consumption. So how does the 11 inch feel for drawing? I bought a 9.7 inch earlier this year and it feels too cramped. Would the 11 inch feel that much different if I were to upgrade?

Apple Pencil 2 lacks some very useful features

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:14 PM PST

There's this idea that Apple Pencil 2 is the same thing for new iPads as a mouse or touchpad for MacBooks. The problem is that the number of gestures I can make using Pencil is really limited. I would love to see options like:

    • slide to scroll in Safari
    • double click to go back
    • long touch to show all apps

    etc..

Are there any informations about the possible future capabilities of the new Pencil? Is it for example "slide friendly"? Is this flat side an active one?

Like, the texture is so cool, the sounds it makes are really satisfying , it isn't stiff and stupid like the MacBook pro's and goddamn they are just so frickin clicky I love it

(Doesn't beat a mechanical keyboard for sure but goddamn they are really nice)

New to iOS looking for Help with Files

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:30 PM PST

I am trying to move some of my workflows from a phone to a tablet. The android tablets I've used, I just don't like or trust them. I purchased an Ipad at the recommendation of a friend. However, I am terribly frustrated at the moment.

My issue is file management. I use Google drive for my working storage. However, I am not able to download any files to my iPad. If I try and post a video I've worked on from my computer, from my google drive I have on my iPad it fails on every platform I try to upload to. I figured this was due to it not being on the iPad and trying to be a point of handoff between to services. So I wanted to download the video to my iPad and upload it that way, but I cannot figure out how to do this. I tried some 3rd party apps but their folders are not seen by installed apps.

I'm at a loss of what to do, and I'm hoping this is me just not being familiar with iOS, and I am missing something. I am tied to google services for my purpose. Anyone explain how I am missing a simple step?

Stepdad gave me his old iPad, but forgot all the passwords.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:51 AM PST

So my parents came to visit from Vancouver last week and my step dad brought me his old iPad I think "mini", he got it through Telus years ago but doesn't remember his icloud or iTunes password. I tried a restore but this has left me with the sign in asking again for his password. Went to the I forgot page to try that and of course it asked for a phone number, they have moved several times for work in the last few years so we have no idea which phone number is associated with it, and he no longer uses Telus so cannot access his email through them. Oh boy hey! So I'm wondering if I have just inherited a fancy new paper weight or what my options are! I can bring it to Telus and he can verify no problem (tho he is no longer a customer), but not sure what they can do? So now I turn to reddit, any help is appreciated!

Password to reset is different from login password?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:23 AM PST

Hi there, I purchased an iPad 2 for my mother around 2013 through an Amazon Warehouse deal. I purchased her the latest model recently and took back the old iPad 2 (running iOS 10.x) which I was going to use myself. The idea was to just reset the iPad 2 and erase all the content to start off fresh. Well, it seems that when I go under Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, it prompts for a 4 digit password which I assumed was the same password to unlock the iPad. Nope! The same password used to unlock the device does not work for reseting the device. I didn't even know this was possible.

Has anyone experienced this and have a workaround?

Any Android Users Here Using the 2018 iPad?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:04 AM PST

Considering getting the 2018 iPad. Will use it 90% of the time to watch youtube/netflix/amazon videos while running on the treadmill, to the point I guess it won't matter what phone I use.

Just curious if there's anything I should keep in mind?

Is it safe to use any charger / USB hub and cable?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:15 AM PST

    Hi there,

my iPad Pro 10.5" just got replaced by Apple for €500. My former device did not came up after charging on a ANKER USB Hub using some (probably not original) lightning cable.

So the device died for SOME reason.

Do you think it is generally safe to use any USB charger / cable?

I am using two other (older) iPads since many years with no problem on any charger/cable. But I am unsure about what could have caused the damage.

    Any hint guys?

    Thanks

WORK NOTES - THE BIG DILEMMA

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:21 AM PST

WORK NOTES - THE BIG DILEMMA

It seems like I'll never find the perfect match. I work with a Lenovo (Windows was mandatory) and often take notes on a new iPad Pro, which I love. I'm frustrated by the fact that the best apps are not multi-platform, meaning that if I take notes on a device, I won't be able to read them on the other (iPad is great for taking notes, but when I'm sitting at my desk in front of a 27" monitor it's limiting).

That being said, what would you suggest? I don't mind spending some money for a solution to my issue.

    • Agenda is my favorite, but only iOS and OSX --> I love how its project management functionalities, notes linked to calendar events and it's time and date management + tags + people involved
    • Notability, Good notes and co have the same problem: no Windows or webapp

That leaves me with Microsoft One Note (a ton of good functionalities, but the interface just doesn't seem right) and Evernote. What do you think are the best solutions?

    Notability or...?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:21 AM PST

Hi everyone! For starters I'm sorry because I know this sort of question must be asked here very often, but I would appreciate an answer directed to my situation.

I'm a mechanical engineering student on my second year, and I recently got a 9.7 inch 6th generation iPad, as well as an Apple Pencil. I have decided to drop paper and start taking notes on the iPad, and so I've been using Penultimate by Evernote. It fulfils my basic needs but it's a very basic app with few features.

I've realised such an app has become indispensable for me, but I need to find a better one, even if that means purchasing one. In my studies theres a a lot of graphics drawing, sketches, equations and overall a lot of math. My handwriting isn't great and I can barely draw a straight line without having to re-do it 5 times until it comes out decent enough (and don't get me started on drawing circles), so an app that has some sort of aid in this would be a huge help for me and I've heard notability has such features. Having the ability to copy and paste parts of the text is a huge need for me (which my current app does not have) and the more organised the app is (organisation by course, date, having bookmarks, etc) the better. I have read great reviews on Notability but I've also read about GoodNotes being great, and OneNote being a good and free solution as well.

What is your suggestion? I really don't mind purchasing, I just want to make sure it's money well spent. I am trying to pick an app to stick with for as long as I can, and any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:54 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

I need to buy an ipad pro 12.9 inch for my mom for christmas. It doesnt have to ship by christmas day but I see a few options on amazon, also the apple store. Can you guys recommend/answer:

    1) Amazon or Apple store for purchase. Which product ipad Pro on amazon should I buy?

    2) Keyboard/case recommendations. I like the idea of a backlit keyboard but i'm not sure if it is worth it to buy logitech vs. Apple.

    Thanks!

    Best iPad for vlogging

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:43 AM PST

    Hey,

I'm looking at getting myself an iPad in the next few weeks for vlogging/video Q&A's etc. I largely need an iPad because without apple products it is basically impossible to co-host Facebook live events. Which iPad is going to be the move for me? I'm not good at knowing about specs and stuff, I jsut need something that will easily handle Facebook live and other webinar type services....

    That iPad Pro back wobble

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:12 AM PST

Considering an iPad Pro 12.9" + Apple Pencil primarily for sketching. Worried about the annoyance of the iPad not sitting flush on a table due to the camera bump.

Would be interested to hear from current gen Pro owners - has the rocking caused annoyance?

    TIA

Great apps to use with the Apple Pencil

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:31 PM PST

Just picked up the 2nd gen Apple Pencil and I'm looking for some suggestions on apps that I can utilize it with. I don't do any design work or major note taking as I'm not in school and don't need to for my job. All I've downloaded so far are a couple coloring apps and just messed with it in the default notes app

Give me the harsh answer. I want to go from using a Lacie hard drive with thousands of photos and a professional workflow to using strictly an iPad Pro. Is it possible for this to replace my MacBook Air for professional photo editing/archiving? Be brutally honest.
