Samsung Native apps or Apple TV (4th gen)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:33 PM PST

I have a Samsung - 55" Class - LED - NU6900 Series - 2160p - Smart - 4K UHD TV with HDR. Should I be using the built in smart tv apps or my Apple TV 4th gen? Do I get higher quality with one over the other? If I click into the espn app on my Apple TV will I be able to use the full capability of the television?

    Video player recommendations

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:32 AM PST

Hello. Is there an app that could connect to an SMB share and use the builtin native tvOS player to play my MP4 collection? I've just spent a week searching for the ideal solution and couldn't find anything that's just perfect.

I got my video collection encoded in MP4s, with embedded metadata, stored on a shared drive over SMB. So the main point is, I don't need any special file format support or extra meta fetcher nor subtitles. I just want to browse my drive on ATV, display the metadata and play the videos. Here's what I tried so far:

    Apple Home Sharing

Was experimenting with connecting the drive to my Mac instead of the router, and the UX is perfect via the builtin Computers app—native player, nice metadata etc. But it's constrained to only one Apple ID and my Mac would need to be always running, logged in, with iTunes running. That's a no go for many reasons, the main one being other family members have different Apple ID's.

    Infuse

This is nice and cool, easy setup and can install the app via Family Sharing for all family members with different Apple ID's. But the UX is just not on par with builtin ATV player.

    • Buffering/loading is visible, FFWD lagging—not displaying the previews instantly (going through a gigabit network). None of these issues were present when browsing/playing via the builtin Computers app.
    • Metadata doesn't support long description.
    • UI feels like going back to Kodi days, clunky, slow, lacking the smoothness I'm used to from native tvOS player.
    • Double-tap to zoom in the video is missing, you need to go through a stupid menu that stops the video and then is remembered for all videos, bah.
    • Audio/Subs selection menus are unnecessarily too technical—just ugly and crowded.
    • Adding new vids doesn't auto refresh
    • No idea why the Library is empty, why is it even there if it's empty! Bah, just all over bad UX

So while Infuse works, and is currently my main player, it's not quite there where I'd like to.

    VLC

This has got almost all same issues as Infuse, but even uglier UI lol. I love VLC to bits, have for years, and is perfect for when I want to play some obscure format quickly. Not ideal for enjoying my precisely tuned collection :)

    File Explorer TV

Perfect in the sense that it uses the builtin tvOS player with all the neat UX bits. The problem is, it doesn't support file metadata—replaces the posters by funky matches from themoviedb, and doesn't display description/titles/etc at all. Overall is very fast, simple and straight forward but is essentially what it says on the tin—a file browser. My video collection deservers a bit better :)

    Plex

Same as Infuse plus I'd need to setup a server on the Mac for which I've no reason to do. Completely unnecessary overhead. Not a fan, never been.

    What else?

So my question basically is, is there an app that offers almost identical experience as the builtin Computers app, but doesn't rely on iTunes please?

    AppleTV name

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:49 AM PST

All my AppleTV now has a number behind it. Example as Bedroom AppleTV(5)

I know it's a network issue where the device give itself a new name but how can I fix this? Restart doesn't help

    ESPN Signing In

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:38 PM PST

I'm trying to watch ESPN while not at home, and it's auto-signing me in as the network I'm currently using. Is this a part of the whole zero sign in stuff? If so, this is going to make travel a pain...

Why the living room option is there when I call on iPhone? It doesn't do anything anyways

Can I use a different YouTube account for Apple TV but keep YouTube Red?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:34 AM PST

I pay for YouTube Red and I want to connect it to my Apple TV, but I would prefer not to use my account. I watch ASMR videos daily on my phone. I don't want my Apple TV recommendations to be bunch of whispering and tapping videos. Also, we watch my finance's niece and I don't want my recommendations to be a bunch of Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig.

So, is there a way to log into Youtube on AppleTV with another account or at least have a separate set of suggested videos?

Brand new TCL 6-series does not work with Apple TV 4K HDMI volume control?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:14 AM PST

    .... really??

My three year old Vizio clearance $60 720p TV does HDMI volume control, but my brand new TCL 6 series (top of the line) requires the "custom IR". This completely kills my idea of putting the ATV behind the TCL to hang on the wall.

Who should I contact about this? I assume both/either companies could push an update to address this. It would be in their best interest as TCL is one of the fastest growing brands today.
