I'm a Freelance Software Engineer looking for a new professional workstation. Convince me to go MAC or to not go MAC.

Hey there. i'm a recent graduate of software engineering, planning on doing freelance work while i look for a job in my field. I've mainly used Windows computers my entire life, albeit usually they were dual boot machines running 7/8/10 Professional and Mint/Debian. With that being said, i have an older style Acer E17 Laptop, with ok specs, but i need something with more ram, and a faster hard disk. Eve after ding a fresh install of windows 10 pro with Hard Disk Prefetch and Hybrid shutdown disabled, it still takes a long time to load.

Now, i can't give up windows entirely. I do a lot of Desktop applications development using Visual studio, primarily using C# and C++, and windows is the largest desktop platform on the market. Visual Studio was ported to MacOS High Sierra in 2017, but i have no idea on how well that port is, so i would be using the machine, if i got a mac as as Mac + Parallels w/ Windows 10 Professional, for obvious reasons.

Now, to be fair, i'm coming in with some bias here. I've gone with people pretty much my entire life disowning apple for corporate tactics and overpriced hardware, but in reality, there is a few things dragging me to the platform:

    1. Target Xcode and Windows, so i can target all platforms mutually. (Windows/Linux/Mac/Android/IOS)
    2. The sleek ultrabook design, which i find really appealing.
    3. I'm one of the few people that thinks the touch bar on the 2018 Macbook Pro looks cool. From what i understand, many Mac users are not to fond of it, but i like it's aesthetic if that makes sense.

Again, for reasons listed above, the primary reason would be the first one in that list. There is literally no way to run High Sierra on my laptop, and even if i got a newer one, i would have to severely downscale my hardware in it's BIOS to have any possibility of getting the installer to work. (plus i wouldn't turn a new laptop into a "Hackintosh Workstation" anyways)

The real sticking point here is he high cost of the machine. I need a laptop with AT LEAST 16GB of ram minimum. Development environments usually take up a big chunk of ram, and Visual Studio usually uses 4-6GB alone, depending on what i am doing. Other IDE's i'll be using are: Python, Netbeans/Eclipse (CDT/JDT), MariaDB, etc... and a Syntax Highlighting TextEditor (My flavour of choice is Notepad++ on Windows/Kate on Linux). Usually i'm working on multiple projects at once, or i'll have SDK documentation pulled up, like JDK information, or Microsoft's documentation for C# for example. When i'm doing development i usually average 9-10GB of ram usage at a time, and my current laptop having only 12 GB is not helping things.

To get a decent Macbook with 16GB of ram and a 512GB SSD (which again i would need to have for parallels access), is roughly $2200-2500 (the device i would be getting would be a newer Macbook, from no earlier than 2017, as i need to be able to target the latest platform SDK's and Operating systems, and i want to avoid as many incompatibilities as possible, as older Mac hardware will become less and less compatible over time. For significantly less than that, i can get, for example, a Dell XPS 15 with a 256GB SSD AND a 1TB Hard Disk AND 16 GB of ram, or i can even get the Huawei Matebook Pro, which has Comparable Specs to the Macbook, albeit, not coming with MacOS High Sierra, for only $1799.99. 2018 MacBook Pro's are completely off the table, as i could take the $3600.00 that i would be spending for one, and get both a good Desktop Workstation and a Powerful Mobile Workstation for the same price.

Now i know there is a lot of "Apple Fanatics" here, but i want an honest answer: is it worth shelling out the premium price to target the platform? honestly, i would love to have the ability to target all platforms for development, but i don't know if the price is worth it. This is going to be a machine that i will be using professionally for at least the next 4-5 years or so, so it needs to be something that if i put a significant amount of money into it, i won't feel like i wasted significant amounts of money on, or regret purchasing.

Again, i'm looking for some honest advice here. Any information is greatly appreciated

Cannot install windows 10 with bootcamp on my MacBook Pro 15" 2017

Cannot install windows 10 with bootcamp on my MacBook Pro 15" 2017

I've been trying to install windows 10 with bootcamp on my MacBook, but it won't success... I have never installed windows while I was on high Sierra, but now recently, I need to install due my work. I downloaded the windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and it seems like sometimes it fail on downloading boot camp drivers.

Those times when it seem to pass the windows bootcamp drivers downloading and it starts to partitioning my disk, I get an error after half way of partitioning saying "Cannot partition disk please disk aid disk" or something.

    How can I fix this?

I tried the same ISO on a 2016 model 15" and it worked fine. I have not activated file vault, my ssd is APFS. Could iCloud Drive sync downloading back my stuff be a problem? I installed Mojave and after an hour I tried to install windows. I have also never had windows in High Sierra.

    Please can someone help?

2012 MacBook Pro 15' Bluetooth pane not present

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:58 PM PST

I recently purchased this MacBook and I have found out that the bluetooth is very wonky and may appear, but most of the time doesn't. This machine used to have wifi connectivity issues until I went in and reconnected all of the loose connections coming from the airport card. the bluetooth in the device remained the same and I'm not sure why. Is there any way I could solve this besides a SMC or PRAM reset? is there a piece I can disconnect and reconnect inside.... or is the bluetooth gone gone?

Need help! I truly don't know anything about Apple Macbooks

As title states, I'm clueless when it comes to Apple. Anyway, I'm looking at getting my my future stepdaughter a Macbook. Her laptop took a shit and I think it'd be a good time to get her one. She has an ipod and we recently got her an iPhone 8. I'm thinking an Mac for Christmas. What I'm looking at is a Macbook air model MQD32LL/A. I found it for $789 new. Is this a good price and will this get a teen through a few years of high school? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Macbook air 2018 or Macbook Pro without touch bar?

Advice needed! Bought a refurbed 2018 MB Pro with touchbar but have FOMO about MacBook Air

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:07 AM PST

I'm a writer who's just upgraded from a 2015 Macbook 12 inch. It was starting to lag and annoy me so I wanted something faster.

I liked the look of the 2018 Macbook Air, but I need 512GB storage, which pushes the price up to £1600.

For only £50 more I found a refurbed quad core 2018 MB Pro with touch bar and the same amount of storage.

So now I have the Pro and it's fantastic, of course. So fast compared to my old 2015 MB. It's a joy.

But I'm wondering: even at the same price, do I need all this power? The brighter/better screen is definitely a plus, but would I be happier with more battery life in the Air?

This is a first world problem of the highest order, but I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has experience of using both these machines. Is the battery life appreciably different? Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Base model MBA 2018 OK for photo editing and light video editing?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:52 AM PST

I mainly plan to use it for browsing the net, writing, and Netflix but if I want to do some photoshop and basic video editing I'm curious if the base MBA 2018 model will do? If not, which part of it should I be upgrading?

Also what do you guys think of 128 GB of space--enough or way too small?

    Thank you!

Should I update macOS on my 2012 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 02:46 AM PST

Honestly I have done very little research on macOS, and any personal maintenance methods I should practice to keep my computer running smooth. I am only asking because I updated my OS when Sierra came out and noticed a bit of a decline in performance and speed from my Mac.

Pretty much, I only used this computer as a casual word and excel machine for most my college courses. Maybe some music on YouTube playing in the background. I've graduated now and I want this Mac to last as long as it is able to, while also giving me good performance.

I am just a little hesitant to update due to fear of my Mac slowing down. And the only maintenance I have done was through my top quality antivirus program.

I am currently on Sierra version 10.12.6 MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012 [refurbished, I think] Intel i5 4GB RAM Intel HD Graphics
