[Official] General Discussion Thread - 2nd half of November

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:56 AM PST

Welcome to r/iPad's first General Discussion Thread!

Have a question? Need help with your new iPad Pro 2018? You want an opinion on your next purchase, or are you having issues with your device? This is the place to ask.

Starting now, we won't be approving posts that are questions about what to buy, (Which iPad should I get?, What case should I buy, Is there mouse support?...), app suggestions requests and other basic questions to avoid the front page to be saturated with said posts, so please ask those questions here.

Regarding app suggestions, every Friday we will create a megathread just for app discoveries and suggestions.

If anyone has any questions or ideas, you can either leave them below or message us.

Found a smashed Apple Pencil in the street. Taped the end. IT STILL WORKS!

To anyone in research/academia: how do you use your iPad? Let’s share workflows and tips!

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 06:24 AM PST

I've seen quite a few academics and researchers posting tidbits on how they use their iPads in their workflows. I'd love for people to share tips and strategies! Here are some of mine:

-I highly recommend using Zotero, which allows you to extract your annotations with the Zotfile extension. You can send PDF's to your iPad, read and annotate them with PDF expert (with typed comments), and then extract the highlights/annotations so that you do not need to re-open the article when writing a paper. It's crazy to me that Zotero is the only citation management software that allows for extracting highlights, but it's such an amazing feature that I'm willing to sacrifice a lot to get it! (Even though Zotero overall is also a good program). The main point of using Zotero is to install Zotfile add-on to extract highlights & notes (e.g., I make highlights and sometimes add a text note to the highlight). They are extracted as italics for the highlights and plain text for notes. The only annoying thing about PDF expert is that it doesn't sync too well with Zotero....but it's not that bad because I don't read 10-20 articles at once, but rather focus on each one individually. I view sending the PDF to my iPad as "printing" the PDF, with the huge benefit of being able to put it back on my computer, synthesize the highlights, and extract my notes.

-Scrivener is great for grant applications and longer papers that have lots of complex parts - you can break up each one and write them individually, then compile into the overall grant application

-Pages is amazing for creating diagrams and figures, especially on the iPad where you can drag things around

-Numbers is also great (though usually on a Mac) for creating bar graphs; I typically paste data from Excel once I've formatted it correctly (data still lives in Excel), and just use numbers to create the graphs

    Any Black Friday Deals?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:36 AM PST

Thought we could collect Black Friday Deals for the iPad in one thread.

I'm hoping there are some on the new iPads, or even a general "apply this coupon for anything we carry" that would then work on the new iPads. I doubt it, but maybe. Let's try doing not just US centric deals :) I will try to list them in this post.

Perspective from someone whose iPad Pro has replaced a laptop

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 10:11 AM PST

Given the debate whether the iPad Pro can replace a laptop - I'd like to chime in with my own experience successfully replacing my MBP with the iPP.

I had the 12.9" IPP during university and I used it to take notes, do my readings and for basic media consumption. I was a Communications major so all my writing, design work, video editing and presentations, I was doing on my IPP. Ever since getting that IPP, I was using my MBP maybe once a week to transfer photos from my iPhone to my hard drive. Getting the IPP truly revolutionised my study experience since I didn't need to print anything, had all my notes and lecture slides on my iPad. It made studying so much easier and more efficient.

So when I had to go for a summer programme overseas, I had to choose between bringing my MBP or IPP because I felt it didn't make sense bringing both. Plus, I didn't want to risk losing both my beloved. This is when I became very well acquainted with the shortcomings of IPP. My exchange university used some pretty old website for one of my courses and I couldn't access it because it ran on a plugin that the IPP didn't support (I can't remember what). Also, we had to use Excel for the class and while I had Excel on the IPP, the particular feature that we had to use wasn't available on the iOS version. +some other problems too. Basically, I found myself getting frustrated with my IPP because it was slowing me down.

However, despite the frustrating summer I had, I never found myself in that situation again when I was back home. I mean there are times when I do run into some issues where I need to use a laptop, but pretty rarely. I graduated and got a job where I had a desktop at work so any intensive work (sometimes I need to pull up Adobe InDesign or Photoshop) I do at work. Whatever I had to do at home, I never had difficulties doing on my IPP.

Fast forward to 6 November, a day I will always mourn, for it is the day my MBP died. It fell while I was in the toilet trying to refresh the Apple website to order the new iPad Pro. So on 7 November, I became the proud owner of the new 11" iPad Pro while mourning the loss of my dearly beloved MBP. I was thrust into a life where my iPP HAD to replace a laptop. And so far so good!

The conclusion I've reached is that yes there are short comings with iOS, but they haven't been glaring enough for me to need a laptop (or consider the small fortune to fix my MBP). They are problems that I can easily manage with a simple solution like borrowing someone else's laptop lol But the ease it affords me in my daily life like being paperless, having everything consolidated on one powerful, portable device far outweighs the little annoyances that I occasionally experience.

My intention in writing this post is to provide a perspective from someone who has actually transitioned into using the IPP as their main device and what my life looks like for me to be able to do that. I hope if you are thinking of the question every tech reviewer is dead set on answering in their review videos, you use me as a barometer to reflect on your own needs. If you find yourself in a similar position then yes, an iPad Pro can definitely be your main device especially at a time when MacBooks have become really expensive, the IPP is a great alternative. But if you see yourself needing to do much more than I do, then maybe you're better off looking elsewhere.

Screen Unresponsive on 2nd Generation iPad Pro 12.9"

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:11 AM PST

For the past month or so, my 12.9" iPad Pro has been intermittently suffering from an unresponsive touch screen. The issue will happen every ~10 minutes or so and will linger for 10 to 15 seconds. During that time, the iPad will not accept any touch input (taps, swipes, long press, etc) and the device is basically bricked until the issue goes away. I have tried to solve the issue by restarting the device, messing around with accessibility settings, disconnecting my Apple Pencil, turning off Bluetooth, basically anything that I can think of. Has anyone else run into the issue before with their 2nd gen iPad Pro and knows of a way to fix it?

Is the iPad Pro 10.5 still worth it?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:45 AM PST

I'm a budget-conscious freshman in college, but I care about what the iPad Pros offer.

I wanted to get an iPad for note-taking, light productivity tasks, as well as for glorified content-consumption.

I tend to be a stickler for getting the newest device possible for the sake of longevity. Independent of power, I care about having continuity across devices going forward, so getting a device with Touch ID as everything moves toward Face ID for example makes me wary. The USB-C port of the new iPad opens up tons and tons of possibilities, and would be another continuity factor if all devices move to USB-C at some point (it would be kind of like getting a 30-pin connector device as everything was moving to lightning in 2012-13).

Since the iPad Pro 2018 is such a huge power boost over the 2017 10.5, I'm wary. Almost double GPU power? 40% faster CPU? I feel like with that, the 10.5" iPad will just get left in the dust.

I really, really care about Pro Motion, True Tone, Laminated display, extra RAM with Pro tablets (being able to run 3 apps simultaneously for example) so the 2018 iPad is kind of out of the question. I'm just not sure if I should bite the bullet and get the 2018 iPad (and break the bank) or go look on Swappa for deals on the 10.5" iPad. I'm seeing deals on 256GB Unlocked models for around $650, some including Apple Pencil which I need, and it's really tempting.

Would I be okay just getting the 10.5" iPad as someone who cares about pro features, but isn't a crazy power user either? I have a MacBook Pro still, so this would more than likely be a supplementary device.

Dunno if it's known but Apple is selling an otterbox case for the new iPad Pros that is cheaper than the folio, stumbled upon it

Why don’t we have gestures for Apple Pencil?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:24 AM PST

I would love at minimum a gesture to go Home with the pencil. I don't see why they couldn't design gestures on screen or tap combinations on the pencil for different functions such as control center, home or dock.

    Logitech Slim Combo 10.5 Question

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 08:44 AM PST

The thing looks pretty bulky, but I'm curious how it feels once you detach the keyboard. Can you one hand it in tablet mode or does that back cover add to much weight? Thanks!

iPad Pro | The Brick Wall Of iOS

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 12:22 PM PST

A month out of warranty my ipad pro developed a display fault.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:04 AM PST

So I'm not sure what to do. I got my Pad pro 10.5 last year about mid-october. A few days ago I noticed a fairly soft, bright spot on the screen, like uneven backlight. It's a bit bigger than my thumbprint and not very noticable on dark backgrounds, but it started really bugging me when I take notes in class or type, read, etc.

It's not a huge deal but I'm really bummed out because my mom's iPad 2 is still going relatively strong, and this device took me ages to save up for. I had hoped to keep it in pristine condition for at least a few years.

I'm not sure what to do. I'm not covered under warranty anymore (I'm in Poland, if that makes a difference). I can't really afford to repair it. I thought about selling it and buying the 11 inch one but now I'm not even sure it's worth the effort. :/ Anyone gone through something similar and has any advice?

Advice on New iPad Data (Carriers, Prepaid, PAYG, etc)

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:41 AM PST

Just curious on people's experience on data plans for the iPads.

Back when I was on T-Mobile there was a lifetime plan for my tablet at a slow speed but I've moved to FirstNet (AT&T for first responders) and I am unable to add a line (no Apple Watch plan either but that's another topic).

Has anyone used Ting or a prepaid tablet only option? Verdict on the best/ cheapest options?

    Thanks y'all!

    Quick question about Overcast

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 04:05 AM PST

I'm fairly new to using Overcast. I started using it on my phone a few weeks ago, and recently downloaded it on my new iPad Pro. I have 3 playlists created, and every podcast I subscribe to is included in 1 of the 3 playlists. When I downloaded Overcast on my iPad, it synced the 3 playlists onto my iPad.

Ideally, I would like to remove 2 of those playlists, along with my subscriptions to the podcasts on those playlists, from my iPad version of Overcast, but keep them on my phone. I'd like to keep syncing listening progress between the two devices for the one playlist I keep on both.

If for some reason I can't do that, I'd like to at least have separate settings on the 2 devices. On my phone, all new episodes automatically download to the device. I'd like to have it so that on my iPad, the podcasts on the two playlists I want to get rid of don't download to the device, but keep it so that they download on my phone.

It's quite possible that one or both of these options are really easy to do by just making the change on my iPad. But I don't want to risk doing it, have the change sync over to my phone, and have to rebuild those 2 playlists from scratch after they get deleted on both devices.

I have not signed into Overcast.fm via email email address on either device.

Thanks in advance for any help.
