It's happening: Spotify is testing an Apple Watch app in the latest TestFlight build Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:56 AM PDT Just updated the TestFlight build, and there's now an Apple Watch app. Right now it's limited to controlling playback on the phone, however (no offline support). [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:45 AM PDT Thought it was a pretty cool customer experience. Last night, I called Apple to see if I can still get the education pricing for the new iPad. The rep said that since my payment is being validated that I'm not able to receive a credit. I told him I was planning on getting the Smart Folio case anyways and was hoping for maybe a $50 gift card equivalent for the education discount. He ended up just adding the case to my order and shipping it to me completely free! And the case retails for $79. I'm pretty stoked. Checked the shipping and it's getting here the day before my iPad gets here. May not be a big deal to some, but I thought it was pretty cool. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:45 AM PDT The old iTunes remote app is bad and obsolete. This should have already been integrated to iTunes on both the iOS and macOS. [link] [comments] |
I'd like to say thank you Apple for a stellar customer service experience today. Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:11 PM PDT It all starts with a 2016 Touch Bar MacBook Pro that had its share of issues. In the last year - keys getting stuck, display popping, audio issues, and as of a few days ago, a glitchy display, I set up a repair with an Apple Senior Advisor over the phone the other day, and shortly after that call, a Senior Manager from the local Apple Store reached out to me completely unprompted, asking if I could bring my laptop in so that both he and the lead technician could take a look at it before I sent it in. Definitely impressive when he said, I will make sure that you have a complete resolution of this issue by tomorrow and give you some options. What astounded me on this interaction, though, was the complete focus on the issue that the two of them gave to my issue. They basically disregarded most of the standard inquiries that their colleagues were asking, and focusing solely on the resolution of my issue. And at the end of an hour+ troubleshoot session, the Senior Manager and leading technician discussed, authorized and approved a swap for a brand new 2018 model with equivalent specs to prevent me the hassle of sending my laptop in for yet another repair at the depot (twice in a month). I'm pretty floored, to be honest. That honestly blew my mind, and really makes me glad to be an Apple customer. Everett and Josh over at the Apple store in Chenal - thank you both so much for an incredible service experience. I don't know where else I can leave feedback, but... I really appreciate the support. :) [link] [comments] |

With the latest pricing of MacBook Air is Apple heading towards even higher prices with MacBook Pro? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:41 PM PDT Apple had at least two options. Price the Air lower so it doesn't compete with the Pro 13' or make it compete and raise the prices of the MacBook Pro spring/summer 2019 so they no longer compete and in return make more profit. My answer would be that Apple strategically made the Air and Pro 13' compete because of two reasons. If people are going to spend more than 1000 dollars they will be motivated to spend the extra 50-100 dollars because of the performance boost. More revenue. The second reason is that if Apple kept the Air priced at 999 dollars they would have no reason for raising the prices of the MacBook Pro next year. By raising the price of the Air to make it compete with the Pro 13' during 2018 - early 2019 it gives Apple a reason to raise the prices of the MacBook Pro next year and in return keep making more revenue from the higher priced Air and Pro at the same time not competing with each other. They have strategically pushed the starting price even higher this way. To make this less confusing. Alternative A) Air ($999) and Pro 13' ($1299) or alternative B) Air ($1199) and Pro 13' ($1299) -> Pro 13' ($1499) 2019. More sales towards the Pro 13' in 2018 but recoup Air sales in 2019- with the added bonus of even higher priced MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. If that's the case I believe Apple will finally reach a critical tipping point and start to outprice many of its customers (this tipping point might already have been reached for some). It might just be me but I already have a hard time justifying paying 4,000 (Europe) dollars for a laptop, let alone afford. What're your thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Finally have my dream setup. MacBook Pro with eGPU Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:23 PM PDT So I've been tossing this idea around for a while, but finally committed to doing it. I had a 13" MacBook Pro nTB and a Gaming Desktop (i5-4690k+ GTX 970). I just sold them, bought a open item 2017 MacBook Pro 15" Base (2.8 Ghz i7 - 256 SSD - 16 GB - RX 555) and I also got a Sonnet Breakaway Box with a RX 480 4 GB. I was a little nervous doing this as I heard some people have problems getting bootcamp to work with a eGPU, but for me I had zero problems. Popped in the card into the dock, plugged it in and off I go. Playing Bf1 on mostly Ultra settings at 60fps as well as pretty much any other game I could want at 1080p. So the dream lives. Mobile laptop on the go, and when I come home, I plug in two thunderbolt cables and I have a monster gaming machine. The second thunderbolt cable has a usb C hub that I have a ethernet connection, usb cable going to the back of one of my monitors which act's as a USB hub. That monitor has an external SSD, keyboard+mouse, webcam, lightening cable all plugged into it. Lastly, I bought a Insignia USB C 90 watt charger and use the power passthrough on my USB C hub to power the laptop. Sorry, a lot of people may not care, but I just wanted to share how happy I am with this setup. My desk is so clean now loosing that big tower and I have overall simplified my tech setup. Life is good. All in it cost me around $1700 and I sold my old laptop and desktop for $1500. Down the road, I may even consider going back to a 13" as I prefer that size as they now have quad core CPU's, but at the time, there was no chance of getting a 2018 13" for the price I got my 15" Here is the setup, Macbook unfortunately was not in picture as I already had it in my work bag packed away when I took this. Normally would sit just to the right of my monitors. The Sonnet Dock is behind the monitors, unfortunately it only comes with a 1ft long cord, so I couldn't put it somewhere more prevalent. Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:37 PM PDT Hi, I've been waiting a long time for the new Mac Mini, and I'm starting to plan how I'm going to use it. Due to the silly prices Apple charges for internal SSD, I've decided to buy the smallest internal SSD possible and boot off a Thunderbolt 3 SSD. In addition I want to try using an eGPU for gaming. I'd like both to get a full 4 PCIe lanes (32Gb/s). Does anyone know if I plug them into separate ports on the Mac Mini if they will both get a full 4 PCIe lanes or if the lanes will be split between the 2 devices for only 2 lanes each? I am curious because it doesn't seem to be the case on some macbook pros, so I suspect there will also be limited lane allocations on the new Mini (possibly worse). Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Has anyone used the Apple Watch cellular without their iPhone? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:26 PM PDT Im seriously considering buying an Apple Watch cellular and leaving my phone at home. I'm not on it much and want to reconnect with the world around me. I also go to the beach a lot and am always paranoid of it getting stolen when I'm in the water. I would like to know your thoughts and opinions on using just the watch and if it does everything you need it to. [link] [comments] |

Are any other XS users getting way better reception/data since the update? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:26 AM PDT My XS Max struggled bad compared to my X in areas of low coverage but ever since the 12.1 update it hasn't dipped below 3 bars and the performance has been dramatically better so far. Wonder if anyone else had this experience since the update said it was going to help cellular issues. Just didn't know this much. Edit: on Verizon [link] [comments] |
Has anyone here successfully learned to code from Swift Playgrounds? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:39 AM PDT Just curious if anybody here has actually learned to code from scratch using Swift Playgrounds on iPad, or if you've heard success stories. I started using it and was enjoying it, but the Smart Keyboard on my old iPad Pro kind of died out, so I just put it on hold until I get my new iPad Pro and keyboard. I'm hoping to learn to code with it because it seems like a fun and intuitive way to learn, and I've also started using freecodecamp in the meantime, and that seems to be pretty great for a beginner like me, as well. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
