Why is reddit so anti apple?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:43 PM PDT

If you go to any sub that's tech related such as r/gadgets or r/technology any thread that is mildly anti Apple gets so many up votes even if it's intentionally misleading.

This has probably been posted a million times, but there still isn’t an Apple Watch app. Apple has sold over 50 million watches, so it’s a huge potential market for Spotify. Please vote to let Spotify know how much we would appreciate an Apple Watch app! ;)

So the other night I had Facebook open on my iPhone 7. I was in bed, on the phone and in the dark so I tried to turn on the flashlight from control center to find my AirPod case.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:49 PM PDT

However, the icon was greyed out as though the camera app was open. At first, I assumed it has something to do with being on FaceTime Audio so I asked my girlfriend if I could call her back.

I ended the call with my AirPods (Facebook was still open) and tried to turn on my flashlight again. Icon was still greyed out.

    Close Facebook. Flashlight works.

Deny Facebook camera and mic permissions, open Facebook. Flashlight still works.

Now, maybe I'm a little late to the party but this is quite alarming to me. It seems as though Facebook is obviously using my camera while I'm simply scrolling through my newsfeed. Has anyone else experienced this?

TL;DR - Found out Facebook is using my iPhone's camera while I scroll my newsfeed.

    “It’s hideous.” September 2014

Pro Tip: As long as you have an .edu email that you can log into, you can get the student membership price on Apple Music.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 06:20 AM PDT

Some colleges and universities don't deactivate your student email after you graduate.

    YMMV

[Tip] If you are experiencing burn-in on your iPhone X, Apple will replace the screen for free as long as it’s in warranty.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:57 PM PDT

I've had the iPhone X since launch day and recently got the XS Max. I wanted to sell the X and it had burn-in of the lock and camera/flashlight buttons. Took it to Apple and they replaced the display no questions asked.

iOS Business Chat: Excellent feature, but too hidden?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 08:33 PM PDT

Perhaps I am missing something, but for such a convenient feature, it seems so hidden within the UI that many (I would assume) are not aware it there.

As an example, I will typically use business chat via iMessage to get help from T-Mobile. However, if I do not have a previous, accessible thread within iMessage, the only method to initiate the chat is by spotlight searching "T-Mobile," and then you have to scroll through various results to find it.

Is there a more convenient way to go about this that I simply have overlooked? Like I said, it's a great and convenient feature, but it seems so hidden within the UI that unless I have used it for a specific purpose in the past, I wouldn't even think to go that route.

Upgraded from iPhone 5s to iPhone X

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:55 PM PDT

I just upgraded from the iPhone 5s I've had since launch in 2013. Man this new iPhone X is amazing. It's like night and day over here. The camera is beyond amazing and I can't imagine what it's like on the X's or Max. I would have got those but the deal I got for the X was way better and saved me like $430. Speed is unreal, battery life is amazing too. I'm just in awe of how awesome this phone is. Was worried about Face ID being awful compared to Touch ID but I barely even notice it. Face ID has recognized my face every time today and I haven't put my password in once except for setting up the phone. Don't even get me started on the OLED screen, everything feels like it has more life to it. All that's left now is to get some airpods with the money I saved from not getting the Xs. Going to see if airpods 2 will be announced before getting them.

    Take that iBooks!

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 11:29 AM PDT

I'm driving to see family for thanksgivings. I felt like getting an audio book so I pulled over to a gas station to download one. Found one I liked and went to buy it on my iPhone. I got an error saying I couldn't download an item over 150MB on cellular. There wasn't any easy to find wifi around so I though I was stumped. However I realized I had my iPad and wondered if I bought it on the iPad while using my phone as a hotspot would fool Apple. Turns out it did and the audio book downloaded without an issue. Take that iBooks 😝

Hey Siri, play my favorite radio – We have developed an app that plays radio via Siri Shortcuts (on HomePod). Do you like?

    New Facetime update. Let's talk.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:23 AM PDT

I couldn't find a discussion and wanted to start one here. I facetime nearly daily with my SO and it was always simple, clean and easy to use. After the new iOS update, if you want to flip to the back facing camera, you have to pull up a separate screen and it's super slow and chunky. Any of the stickers or little graphics you can add cause the frame rate to drop to an unusable level. There's also no more screen shots! We loved having the live screenshot option.

Am I just being old and crotchety about this or do others struggle as well? I don't see how it was released in this condition.

Ordering Apple Watch Series 4 from Nike.com

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 04:51 PM PDT

Just wanted to let people know that if you order a Series 4 Apple Watch from Nike.com they delivery date they quote you is incorrect.

I ordered from Nike.com because I had a gift card and at the time of purchase they said that it would deliver the next day. They then updated the delivery date to October 16th. Even as I write this it says that they are available for next day delivery, just wanted to give anyone who would purchase from Nike.com a heads up not to pay for next day shipping as they can't fulfill that order. Not a huge deal for me, but it would have saved me some time calling and asking for a shipping refund had I known ahead of time...

Using shortcuts made me realize I don't want or need my assistant to be more human like, just do what I want and that's it.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 08:41 AM PDT

Coming from someone who temporarily switched to assistant because of Siri being shit.

When I first started using assistant, I was impressed. It was able to answer complicated questions, sing and play games as if it was actually a human.

However, it did get meh after sometime, and when I actually started to use it for tasks, it was underwhelming. I had to manually go in and plug into a service, which I really didn't like. Even then, it never worked properly. Recently, it started to show me matching news articles every time I tried to search for an answer. It was also not very reliable and slow at some things.

This is different with shortcuts. I can now request Spotify tracks by just asking Siri, no account setup required. Or play my favorite radio stations with my tuner pro. From a usage standpoint, it works much better than assistant.

That said, it does need improvements.

I want shortcuts from the shortcuts app to run in the background, stop the useless commentary as well. Allow input from the Siri to the shortcut, not just dictation.

Overall, I think apple has made a solid move here that actually manages to have something over the competition.

My 9 year old laptop on OSX 10.12 (13” Early 2011 MBP/525GB SSD/16GB RAM) can communicate / sync / airdrop with my 3 year old phone on iOS 12 (iPhone 6s 64GB) today less than 90 days from 2019. Both devices basically operate at same perceivable speed as the day they were purchased.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 02:12 AM PDT

A testimony to what a company can do with hardware long after the users initial purchase. I know they probably won't sustain the same product support cycle length...

but hot damn it's been a hell of a ride. One that I plan on rocking until the wheels fall off.

For all the left handed iPhone X, Xs, Xs Max, and future Xr owners....

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 08:05 PM PDT

Do you think Apple will ever have a setting to switch control center to the left hand side instead? I can't imagine it would be difficult to implement into the software. I carry my phone in my left hand all the time and having to bring my other hand out is not appealing to me.
