TIL You can charge a MacBook Pro with another MacBook Pro Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:14 AM PDT If you plug USB-C cord from one MacBook Pro to another, one of the laptops will charge the other. The first person to plug in will be the one getting charged, the second person to plug in will be the charger. It's great for travelling or for daisy chaining if only one of you can reach the plug :) [link] [comments] |

PSA: iOS 12 allows you to airdrop account/website passwords to someone else’s keychain Posted: 05 Oct 2018 06:38 PM PDT I haven't seen this posted, but it's a nifty little feature that should come in handy. Go to the accounts and passwords setting, select the password you want to share, long press on the password itself and you should get an option to airdrop. My wife and I share my amazon account for prime, Netflix etc and really appreciate this feature. Hopefully some of you will find it helpful as well. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Oct 2018 04:20 PM PDT TL;DR STOLEN APPLECARE. Will keep updated. Preordered iPhone with the upgrade program, straight from apple website, months later, discovered someone stole and engraved our serial number into their phone to use our AppleCare+ benefits My SO went to the Apple store to get his screen fixed, we have AppleCare+ that we've never had to use on this device, so we weren't expecting anything to go awry. Turns out, the allotted amount of repairs had already been done and if he wanted to repair the screen, it would be like $270 (give or take). "That's impossible, we've never had any repairs done, we bought with the upgrade program, so we have to have AppleCare+" "Well it says here that Ben Ichang from New York has already used the AppleCare+ benefits for this serial number. I'm not sure how exactly this could have occurred, other than the info I've given above which was given to us by the store: that someone engraved his serial number into their own phone to reap the benefits of our AppleCare. After about 4 and a half hours, they were able to push past the issues in some way, call corporate, and let them know, and will be giving us a call back at a later date. Anyway, if I were you, I would check your AppleCare and make sure your benefits have not already been redeemed. Sucks. I wish they would have checked the names and Apple IDs in order to prevent this. Edit: he said he was assisted by 4 people, two of whom were on the phone with corporate during this time. The phone was plugged in during this time, and the person assisting him during said "yea, the system is pushing back the same information." Then read the name "Tommy Chong" as the person who had taken advantage of the repair. Which, if you know Cheech and Chong, that's obviously a fake name. My SO said he overhead the people on the phone say that it was paid for on a card with the name Ben Ichang or whatever it was. Idk if there's a way to dupe a serial number, but something fishy is happening. This is all that we currently know. Edit 2: so I'm poking his brain some more, as I am really baffled and angry about this. He said that in their system, they can see that someone used his phones serial number to get a replacement phone at an Apple store in New York. He said the whole staff was using language like "what the f***" is going on", and just completely perplexed with this situation. On our end, we can't see that AppleCare was used, like there's no evidence of AppleCare+ coverage being used on any of our email addresses, but he does have the original "proof of coverage" email. Edit 3: as I'm asking more questions, I'm typing while he's talking, the tech said "So apparently we've both been scammed. Someone must have laser engraved your serial number into the sim slot of a phone that wouldn't work or turn on, (I assume this is the IMEI and not the serial number) and got a replacement phone using your coverage. Someone name Tommy Chong." And then he said the guy chuckled. So they can see this in their system under his information. Not sure how the mix up occurred or how it was allowed to happen. I think that's all the info I can give until they call us tomorrow. Edit 4: have just talked to a friend that works for Apple, her theory is that an employee may have been in on the scam and authorized the device replacement. Any Apple employees know if this can be done? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:12 PM PDT After nearly a year with my iPhone X, yesterday I went into an Apple Store and bought a 128gb SE. Most Apple Stores still have some limited stock but will be turning their remaining inventory back soon I understand. Some notable details: I have average size hands, male, love using my phone one-handed, and I refuse to use cases on my devices. Yes, the display is not as good or nice as the X or newer models by a longshot. It doesn't have the fastest chips inside. The physical home button with first gen Touch ID is clunky and not the quickest. The speaker is dated. There's no haptic feedback. It's a little more difficult to type with the smaller keyboard. It's not water or dust resistant. There are signs iOS 12 isn't fully optimized for the 4" screen. I don't care. I missed Touch ID a lot, it works so much better for me and isn't awkward like Face ID. I realized I almost never have long writing sessions on my phone – I mostly triage emails and take care of them later on my Mac unless it's a quick reply. I use my phone as a productivity device first and foremost. I don't play any games, I hardly watch any videos, and I'm not a heavy photo taker (call me crazy but I find the SE's camera better than the X). I have no use of Animoji or any of that 'fun' stuff. I text, email, call, light social media use, and listen to music. I also use Apple Pay often. There's something about this small and light form factor with perfect depth that is just right. It feels great in the hand to grip, it's easy to use one-handed unlike any other current iPhone. There's no camera bump. It's not slippery, you can put it down on almost any surface and it won't slide away. Can't even notice it's in your pocket. Call me an old traditionalist, but I'm still of The Jetsons mindset that technology should get lighter, portable, and smaller (not too small that it's unusable of course) – not bigger, heavier and more fragile. I don't want to have to carry around a larger expensive device. It may be too late, but I hope Apple doesn't fully abandon the small sized phone market. It's still valid, and there's plenty of folks out there who don't want to bigger devices. There's nothing wrong with pocket sized. And people come in all different shapes and sizes - so should devices. [link] [comments] |
Shouldn’t we be hearing whispers about the October iPad + MacBook event already? Posted: 05 Oct 2018 05:44 AM PDT It's October 5th and I feel the rumor mill has been surprisingly quiet about any potential October events where Apple would show us the new FaceID iPad Pros and the updated MacBooks, or the MacBook Air replacement. With iPhone XR preorder date set as October 26th which they might want to remind us about, I do suppose that a very likely event date would be either the Tuesday or Wednesday before, i.e. Oct 23-24. But still, it kinda feels like an October event is far from certain at this point. Any thoughts, or extra information? [link] [comments] |
Random 512gb iPhone XS on my doorstep Posted: 05 Oct 2018 08:25 AM PDT I arrived home to find a package on my door last week. It was a direct shipped 512GB iPhone XS (gold) from AT&T. Apparently, someone got a hold of my SS and purchased the phone on credit with ATT and had it sent to my home. I immediately notified the AT&T fraud dept. and they explained that scammers do this and grab the phone off the doorstep before the victim knows about it. The rep was helpful, erased the purchase from my credit history and said I could keep the phone or sell it. Naturally, I'm keeping it as my kids will play with it if I can't use it personally. This happened about a week and a half ago. I've since checked every IMEI checker that I can find and the phone isn't blacklisted anywhere I've checked, they all say "clear" or "not blacklisted". The only place I'm finding an issue is when I go to the AT&T site and request "unlock", it rejects the request since the phone was reported lost or stolen. I don't need the phone and have an iPhone on the Verizon network already. If there's a way to use this I'd like to. There are sites that claim to be able to get it to work and I'm wondering if these are reliable. I have not opened the sealed case and I'm wondering if I'll diminish the value I might get from selling it if I do. I'd considered popping my verizon simcard into it and seeing what happens since it's never been booted up before, is this wise? Should I just sell it for cheap to someone else to try one of those unblocking sites with, or are they reliable enough to try myself? Thoughts and experiences on this are appreciated - Thanks! I would love it if Apple made the Trailers app OSX-compatible. Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:46 PM PDT I don't like having to use different apps on different devices >_< It would be awesome to use for showtimes and trailers over having to google. [link] [comments] |
iOS 12.1 iPad keyboard is back to normal Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:40 AM PDT A couple of months ago I warned people of the upcoming keyboard mess-up in iOS 12 that Apple has swapped the two quite important keys that change language and the numeric layout. Which totally freaked me out. That little UX innovation did get through to iOS 12.0 release version. Don't know how many of you here did get annoyed by that, but a brief googling shows a number of links where people complain about the keyboard layout problem. https://www.reddit.com/r/ios/comments/9hbhpv/is_anyone_else_noticing_the_keyboard_layout/ https://www.itnews.com.au/news/keyboard-layout-change-in-ios-annoys-users-494832 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8559966 So guess what happened? iOS 12.1 changes it back to how it was in the previous 11 releases! Question for music producers who use the 2018 i9, 32GB of RAM MacBook Pro Posted: 05 Oct 2018 08:35 PM PDT How are you guys finding the performance? I'm interested in Logic primarily, and using large orchestral Kontakt banks. I'm about to upgrade from an ancient 2010 MBP so I realize the jump will be significant, but I wanted to also get some impressions from you guys. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Universal clipboard / Handoff fix! Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT Like many of you, I've never got handoff or universal clipboard to work effectively even after updating to iOS 12 and Mojave. But there is a fix!!
Note: you will lose all connected bluetooth devices by doing this, but it's a simple matter of repairing them again. I've found that everything works as advertised, including Continuity Camera!! Continuity even works in the News apps! Hope this helps some of you :) [link] [comments] |
Facebook Showing Up In My Screen Time - But it's not installed... Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:59 PM PDT I was looking through my Screen Time data today and I noticed something funny. The Facebook app showed 17 minutes of data usage. Here's the rub... the Facebook app isn't installed on my phone. I have Facebook Messenger installed, so at first I assumed that was the reason it was showing up... but scrolling down the data I see Messenger listed separately. I use Facebook in Safari, so I thought maybe that caused it, but I used it for a lot more than 17 minutes today. Anyone else see anything like this? [link] [comments] |
Scrolling bug in iTunes, went to report it with Feedback and it's out of date Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:27 PM PDT I encountered a rather annoying scrolling bug in iTunes where the scroll bar would jump to whatever previous location it was in no matter what I did. I went to apple.com/feedback to report it and the iTunes version number didn't have the most current, or several pervious, versions. Maybe that's a small thing but I remember Apple always having their "shit together". Also the "what Apple products do you have" list stops at the iPhone 8, which was announced at the same time as the X... [link] [comments] |
Dark mode is a great new feature, especially for people who spend long hours on their computer. Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT My eyes are feeling so much better after using dark mode for a while. It's great. However, for some reason the window bar isn't darkened in dark mode. It stays grey. Do you think this is intentional or a bug? [link] [comments] |

Can we talk about how damn cool cross-device use is. Posted: 05 Oct 2018 07:04 AM PDT I've been using iPhones for the past 3 years or so, but never used their other products. But I recently turned an old phone on and everything from my daily driver now is on that phone. That's fucking amazing, and I think a lot of people like me are completely sleeping on it. Think I might be getting a Series 4 or Macbook before too long. That feature has really sold me it. [link] [comments] |
