PSA: if your AirPods started getting less accurate ear sensing and intermittent connections, clean the side holes too

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:33 PM PDT

    https://i.imgtc.com/ijzSqAX.jpg

See image. Remember to clean that part with both a tooth pick and a Qtip.

A plastic tooth pick can easily pick out most of the dirt, then you clean the holes with qtips afterwards.

Note that using a toothpick is essential. A qtip would not be able to clean out all the crap, but rather flatten some of it and further squeeze it in. I tried using only qtips at the beginning, only to find that a minuscule amount of wax came off. But when I dug in with a toothpick, all heck broke loose and it was like a diarrhea. So please don't just clean the pods with qtips and think they are clean enough after quick swabbing

Apple Watch Series 4 Morphing Comparison

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:20 AM PDT

I had a hard time identifying the subtle changes to the Apple Watch S4's design, so I made a morphing animation comparing it with an older model in a similar color and angle.

The first image is a 38mm rose gold S0 Edition. The angle is not identical but close enough to notice a couple changes:

    • Curve radiuses seem increased. Both the corners of the screen and the 3D curve of the glass. The entire case seems smoother and more rounded.
    • The side button is now flush and has a hole (mic?) next to it.
    • The digital crown seems flatter. The diameter of the crown itself seems similar, but the top part is larger, as the sides of the crown aren't as curved.
    • It seems thinner. We suspected it was just a flattering angle, but pay attention to the bottom corner of the case, where there's the "GEN" in 9to5Mac's watermark. I'm pretty sure that part gets narrower with the S4. Also notice the S4 image is slightly more angled than the S0. If anything the extra tilt should make that part appear wider, not narrower.

A look back at when the iPhone X dummy model had leaked

Is there any hope left for 4" iPhone fans?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:01 AM PDT

My SE is starting to show its age now with battery life. With the recent leaks showing the XS and XS plus being 5.8" and 6.5" the trend looks like its going away from nice pocket-sized phones like mine. I'm very comfortable in iOS, but it might just be enough to push me a way from iPhones if I can't find a phone close to their original 4" size.

What should a first-time iPhone user know?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:56 PM PDT

I've been using Android for years until my father gave me an iPhone 7 Plus to try out and see if I liked it.

I absolutely loved the iOS so I am now keeping the phone. There are so many different things in the software compared to Android though. What are some tips and tricks I should know about iPhones?

I've already discovered some things such as having to scroll up from the bottom to open some quick tools, or taping on the top of the screen to scroll up instantly without having to actually keep swiping. What other similar tricks does the iPhone have? They are pretty cool.

Thoughts on Instagram activity in iOS

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:26 PM PDT

Few months back I noticed that whatever I search in Safari browser, it shows as advertisement on Instagram. I know you'd probably mention the recent Facebook scandal but this is not the case, plus, I don't even have Facebook. At the beginning when it happened, I changed my Safari search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo, and the same thing would happen. I even experimented searching stuff with 0 connection to my Instagram activity, then ads miraculously would appear on my feed. I searched for phone cases, then I got tons of phone case ads. Browsed MIT online education, then I had MIT courses ad on my feed.

How can Instagram get such suggestions? I also looked at the settings, and apparently, Siri can learn from Instagram and not the other way around.

Am I missing something here? Would be nice if you know how to disable it from digging my phone and post the tip because it's really annoying, especially if you didn't give your permission to the app.

How have AirPods held up over the course of 6 months to a year?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:03 PM PDT

Looking to get some AirPods for my birthday coming soon, perhaps. I heard battery life gets bad on them after 6 months or so. I just want to make sure that if I buy these, then I can reasonably expect them to last a couple hours with good, solid battery life.

    New imacs?

By what we know so far through leaks, was there any rumors of new imacs? Kinda want a newer one, but want to wait if a redesign is coming soon

I've been working on my game Accelebot for a year now, and I'm happy to say it's finally live in the App Store. It's a 2D platformer where you tilt your phone to move and tap anywhere on screen to jump. No ugly on screen d-pads or auto run mechanics.

How is the AirPort Time Capsule (2TB / A1470) holding up these days?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:44 AM PDT

I'm wondering about killing two birds with one stone and getting this router and backup solution. I know it is old by router standards, but I'm wondering if a used one (sub $100) is a good choice today. Our house is small-ish (1,400 square feet), and we are pretty much an Apple-only household (a couple iPhones, a couple iPads, a Mac, and an Apple TV.) Our internet isn't lightning quick, and other than an iPad Pro, none of our devices are the latest generation.

    Thanks for the input!

Apple Pay on its way to Belgium?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:04 AM PDT

Some people are able to see Apple Pay in the Wallet app. I myself suddenly see an Apple Pay button in iMessage on my Apple Watch. Fingers crossed 🤞

(As I can't post links to social media, nor can I post screenshots of tweets, I'll add a link to some tweets in the comments)

MBP 2018 - SSD Buzzing Issue

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:57 AM PDT

    Hi r/Apple,

Still chasing some public testing here. I'm mainly curious if his behaviour is normal so I would appreciate if people are able to provide input here.

In summary, MBP 2018 and potentially previous models, make a noticeable buzzing noise from the upper left side of the unit during high disk usage, most noticeable on reads in my experience.

    I've posted previously on here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/9bkgsp/attention_mbp_2018_users_ssd_noise_issue/?st=JLKM60NJ&sh=6f9ed8d8

This buzzing sound can be replicated consistently through the use of Blackmagic Speed test, and although faint, can be a little annoying and slightly concerning in a quiet room. This is most noticeable during any high disk usage scenario, and is not an OS bound issue (this is noticed during reinstalls of MacOS, Windows 10 with Bootcamp, etc)

I'm able to test and replicate this issue across two brand new Mac Book Pro 2018s (the 512GB i7 model in my testing).

If in a noisy environment you will need to put your ear close to the keyboard to hear it, but it is quite noticeable in a quiet room.

Not the sound issue either, issue occurs with sound off, on the latest update also.

Please r/Apple, help out to test this - this is my first Apple Mac and I'd hate to be put off just because of a potentially bad batch/shipment.

    Cheers!

Remove U.S. English at the login screen?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:09 AM PDT

How do I remove it permanently with the option to select UK English? I have system preferences > primary language set to UK but the damn login keeps showing U.S. English at the login screen.

TIL you can search photos by subject matter like Food,Cars,Buildings,Art etc...somehow it knows!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:43 AM PDT

This is probably old news to some as it even works on 10.3 but I just found out and was blown away. You can also search the name of locations. There must be hundreds of topics you can search, I was entering "Tr" for tree and auto complete showed "tributaries" as an option. It's a pretty cool way to browse photos, surprised they don't promote it more.
