    iPad 2018 – a first time iPad owner’s review

If you're anything like me, you've never owned an iPad before but you've decided that it's time to buy one. You're not a professional artist, and you don't make a living by producing creative content. Maybe you don't have a specific reason to buy one. Maybe you're hoping to spark some creative ideas. Maybe you want a more simple, minimal computing experience with less distractions. Maybe you think iPads are just neat to play with and you don't need a better reason than that.

Also if you're anything like me, you've spent the last few weeks obsessively researching which model to buy: iPad 2018 or iPad Pro 10.5. You've spent countless days pouring over every YouTube comparison, every write-up, and every /r/ipad post. The thoughts keeping you up at night are about pencil latency, screen gaps, ram, ProMotion, speakers, smart connectors, and that hollow tapping sound.

Also if you're anything like me, you've been waging a massive internal war with yourself over which model to buy. Do I spend more money for the better screen, faster processor, and cool features? Do I want to spend $1000 on a toy/gadget? Or will this be my new main productivity device? Do I save money but compromise quality? How much will I actually use this thing? What if I buy the Pro, but it ends up just sitting there? What if I buy the iPad 2018 and I regret not spending the extra money? How will it hold up in a couple years?

Because, also, if you're anything like me, it will only be after you finally go to the store and make a choice and they swipe your credit card that you'll realize with 100% absolute crystal clear certainty that you should have bought the OTHER one.

If this sounds familiar, stop reading. Go to the store. Buy the 2018 iPad. You're welcome.

This thing is beyond amazing. It feels like way more power and capability than I'll ever actually need. If the iPad Pro didn't exist, the 2018 iPad would be a freaking MIRACLE of modern technology. I am insanely happy with my purchase, and I am insanely happy that I didn't spend twice as much on the iPP. If I develop a new passion for art, or film editing, or anything that requires more horsepower, I can upgrade later. The 2018 iPad feels like it will grow with you if you need it to, or it'll be just as happy to chill with you while you browse reddit.

Let me quickly go through some of the major concerns you may be feeling:

    • Pencil Latency – Seriously, who cares what the actual numbers are? The difference is freaking MILLISECONDS. Are you serious?? Unless you are a professional artist that is currently, right now, today earning their living from drawing on tablets, go buy the 2018 iPad.
    • The Screen Gap – Yes. The 2018 iPad has a gap. And when you really look for it, you notice it. BUT GO LOOK AT THE IPAD PRO 10.5. Watch the icons closely as you swipe from one home page to the next. Watch the icons disappear UNDER the side edge of the screen. There's a gap there too. It's smaller, but if you really look for it, you'll see it. Now were talking about the difference between MILLISECONDS AND MILLIMETERS. Go buy the 2018 iPad.
    • The Hollow Tapping Sound – Yes. The 2018 iPad has a hollow tapping sound when you use the pencil. You know what other objects make a sound when they come into contact with each other? Literally everything. Everything in the known universe that's made of solid matter makes a sound. Go buy the 2018 iPad.
    • Speakers – Full disclosure: The speakers suck. Like, really bad. It was a surprise how bad they are. But, you know, headphones exist. Go buy the 2018 iPad.
    • ProMotion/4gb ram/120mhz/Laminated whatever – Look man, I don't know how else to say it. In my opinion, as a casual user the 2018 iPad is more than capable.

    Go buy the 2018 iPad.

Hopefully this will help if you're still on the fence. Anyone else have a similar experience?

TL;DR If you're not 100% sure why you need an iPad Pro, go buy the 2018 iPad.

    Best iPad-exclusive apps and games?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 08:16 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've recently bought a 2018 iPad and I'm looking for apps and games to fill it up. Other than the apps that I've restored from my iPhone, I'm also scouring the store looking for iPad-exclusive apps that I would not have encountered before on my iPhone.

I've found a few apps such as Procreate, and a few games such as FTL and Darkest Dungeon, but there have to be more that I'm missing out on!!

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

HomeBuilder• Superintendent Checklist, organization, from scratch all on an app. (Need Help Desperately) PLZ READ

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 04:29 AM PDT

I'm currently considering taking over the family business building custom homes. Since no other siblings are jumping to the opportunity. My mother and stepfather have been building homes for the past 30years and they're looking to retire this time next year. Both of them have been doing this so long they just know what to do. No checklist at all, they're old school all through paperwork and stuck in there ways (which I understand, because it's worked for them) I don't wanna come butting in changing anything that they've been doing for decades. I've been in construction my whole life but barely any knowledge on actually building a house. My main issue is I don't have a checklist or anything to go off of when I start superintending jobs. Surprisingly there isn't any books or anything online available or at least up to date. So I'm looking for an app that I can start taking notes, adding as I go along for each and every step of the building process with reminders of everything that I should be checking for that step before moving onto the next step on the schedule. There's so many apps I don't know where to start been using noteablity but doesn't do everything that I need. If anyone could relate to this situation please lmk. Here's a few detailed & specific things that I'm hoping to find if any apps are even possible. This is what I'm looking for in order of importance to me: •Hidden Definition? - I'd love to find this if possible—> where I have a specific word underlined or something and I'm able to select that word and open some sort of custom definition that I'm able to add myself. BUT It's only able to be selected from my ipad and not come up if I print the paper. (Really hoping to find this because I'd also like to add pics to a word) •iPhone to iPad compatibility •Word search- (if I type a word in, it'll show me everywhere that it's ever been typed in) •Apple pen useable •Mic- to type in for me •Apple pen freestyle handwriting turned into text typing (so it's neater/professional looking) •Add pictures •Different letter sizing and Fonts •Highlighting •Color coded Also wondering if anyone has any input on the best app to use with other Co-workers where we can discuss jobs between each other's from the office to the field. Is there anything out there that's capable of a daily/weekly to do list, sending PDFs, sending pics per job in its own folder, a list of extras per Home, possibly job status, emails, color sheets, filing building department paperwork, maybe a wordsearch etc so everyone within the company could use and interact if needed. Looking for something that's free by the way... lol, Or at the worst a one time fee or literally a couple of bucks a month tops. I know there's expensive software and apps out there but that's way to much for what I'm looking for. It's small builder 25-30 Homes a year tops.
I desperately need some guidance if anyone here has any input. Your time is greatly appreciated!!! Hoping to hear from youll.

(If there's a better reddit forum subject to list this in for possibly better results please notify me) Thanks!

What is the difference between each generation if iPad Air?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 09:26 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm looking into purchasing a used/refurbished iPad for my parents. He is currently using the iPad 2 (2011 model). Needless to say, he is due for an upgrade. I don't know much about the differences between each generation but I did a quick search of eBay on the prices.

Before purchasing a new one I was wondering which generation yields the best value (optimizes performance with price).

I found the following price points on ebay:

    Ipad Air 2: 32 gb - $270

    Ipad 5th gen?: 32 gb - $240

    Ipad Air 1: 32 gb - $170

TL;DR: Which used Ipad would you get? Thanks!

case that supports a leaning hand for Apple Pencil, 6th gen iPad?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 04:13 AM PDT

I want to rest my iPad at about 30 degrees and lean my hand on it. I think most cases simply collapse if you do that based on their design. Is anyone aware of a 6th gen iPad case that meets this description?

    Using PDF Expert and iCloud

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 04:11 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have been using PDF Expert for studying for over a year now, but I haven't figured how to use it "from" iCloud, or if it is possible. What I would like to do is something they made possible with 6.0 update:

"Work in the cloud With PDF Expert 6 you can work on the fly in the cloud. If you edit, annotate or sign documents in Dropbox using PDF Expert, all edits are saved right there without downloading the document."

As my pdfs take a lot of space now, I would like to have them on my iCloud and never on my iPad (except when I choose to download them), while still being able use and sync them.

There is an iCloud "folder" in the top left just under Documents, but it seems to me that all files I put there are staying both on my iPad and on iCloud? Or can something be done with that?

And with the new Files app I thought it will be possible but from within I only get to Copy to... instead of Open with... which I think would be a solution?

If it's not possible do you think something like this will be implemented in PDF Expert or Files?

Thank you for your help :)

Trying to find a full coverage case for IPad pro 10.5

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 05:46 PM PDT

I'm trying to find a full coverage(ports and screen) case because I live in a VERY dusty environment(Mojave Desert). All I've found so far is Otterbox. I've used them on my previous iPads, but I'd like something a bit less bulky. I have Lifeproof Fre for my phone and love it, but they don't make a case with screen coverage for iPad. I looked at UAG, but can't tell if there is port coverage. Thanks for any help.

How do you change a file name while saving?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 02:41 PM PDT

When you open an attach, ent or get a document through air drop and want to save it. You click on the options icon and click save to files. Then you can choose a location but can you rename it also? Or do you have to save it and change the name in the files app?

    Charging the iPad

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 06:37 PM PDT

I was looking at a PD charger by anker for fast charging the iPad.

But was wondering if their "Power IQ" technology (Anker wall charger) also charges the iPad faster than the included 12W brick that comes with the iPad?

Just curious as the iPad is the only device I own that would benefit from PD.

Never owned an iPad, looking to get one mostly for drawing

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 09:51 PM PDT

Having never owned one and therefore never using a tablet for art, I'm assuming the 2018 version would be the smarter choice. But I'm not sure if there's any reason I should even consider the price jump for the pro version.

Trying to get back into reading with my new iPad. Kindle or iBooks? I can’t decideeeee

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 09:37 PM PDT

I'm trying to get back into reading and I really want just 1 good place to build my collection but it's hard trying to figure out which is the better place. Kindle or iBooks.

iBooks just flat out looks better with a nicer UI, I buy books through Apple super easy through Touch ID for Face ID and I know there's gonna be a big update coming soon with iOS 12. So that should be nice. And iBooks is baked into the Apple ecosystem which I'm a big part of.

On the other hand kindle has a good selection as well as more free books, the kindle unlimited service and the app is platform agnostic. Main con I can think of is having to buy books through amazons website vs just a simple tap with iBooks.

What do you guys think? Why did you choose what you choose?

Hi guys, is the laminated screen on the ipad pro worth the price jump or is it hardly noticable when writing with the apple pen? Which one should i get for college? Thanks
