Are there any enclosures for my MacBook SSD?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 06:27 PM PDT

I have a MZ-JPU512T/0A6 SSD (12+16 pin) from my MacBook which suffered water damage, and I was just wondering if there is an affordable enclosure / adapter for it? I just want to retrieve my data.

    Thanks in advance!

Is 250 charge cycles after a year's use normal?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:51 PM PDT

I purchased a Early 2015 13 Inch Macbook Pro back in May of 2017 and have essentially had it plugged in 24/7, only taking it out when I'm in Uni. I should also mention that I never turn my MacBook off, I close the lid and leave it on sleep; last time it actually turned off was during a software update last month or so.

Now in June 2018, I see that my charge cycle is 253 and although the condition is 'good' my health is 96% and I've lost nearly 300 mAh from the max capacity.

Is this normal or am I overworking my MacBook? There's a lot of conflicting information regarding MacBooks being constantly plugged in so I'm not sure what the best approach would be.

Headphone jack dead since authorised repair

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 06:16 AM PDT

I had my 2017 MBP repaired recently for a dead speaker, and since the repair, the headphone jack hasn't worked. I have no option to change the audio device in the settings, and even after resetting SMC and NVRAM it's still not working.

I'm a little concerned about the quality of the repair of they've managed to bigger up the headphone jack after a speaker repair.

I've repaired multiple macs in my life, and not once have I broken something like a headphone jack (only those pesky ribbon cables).

I haven't yet taken apart one of the new touchbar models - will a new headphone jack necessitate a new logic board?

Recommendation for a docking station for a MacBook Air 11"?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:43 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I work in IT and only have one user at my company that uses a MacBook Air 11" (A1465). This user has somehow gotten by without any sort of docking station or additional monitor and I'd like to change that for them. Does anyone here know of a good full docking station (multiple USB ports, audio jack, Ethernet port, etc.) that is compatible with this model?

MacBook Pro right now or later?

University starts September. Should I buy the MacBook Pro 2017 non touchbar right now or wait until the refresh (whenever that is) ?

I just bought a fully loaded 2015 15" Macbook Pro

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:07 AM PDT

I've been using a 2010 13" MBP (upgraded to 16gb ram) as my laptop for school and development work but it is definitely starting to show its age. Because of that I have been on the lookout for a good deal on a newer MBP. I was having trouble deciding on going with a 2017 MBP or a 2015 MBP but I just came across a listing on ebay and I broke down and bought it! Let me know if I made a mistake haha.

    Here are the specs:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    MPN: MJLT2LL/A

    Screen Size: 15.4in

    Model: MJLT2LL/A

    Memory: 16GB

    Hard Drive Capacity: 512GB

    GPU/Video Card: AMD Radeon R9 M370X

    Processor Speed: 2.50GHz

Processor Type: Intel Core i7 4th Gen.

    Year: 2015

    Storage Type: SSD

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Price: $1250

It is a used laptop but the seller claims that it is in excellent condition with no significant wear or usage. It has 222 cycles on the battery.

I know it won't be as fast as a 2017 MBP but I feel like it was a pretty good deal for the price. Anything will be an upgrade from my 2010!

MacBook Pro or MacBook 12" for collage and light media use

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 07:04 AM PDT

I am having trouble deciding what MacBook I should buy. I already have an iPad but I stay in college all day and I miss doing more complex stuff that iPad can't.

The laptop is going to be used in college stuff, and sometimes, maybe 2, 3x a month, edit videos, probably on FCP, and edit pictures in Photoshop. So I need portability and sometimes power usage.

I think the MacBook 12" could handle stuff I need, but that power usage makes me wonder if the Pro wouldn't be better. Anyway, what you think?

Ps, I plan to take both iPad and Mac to college

Also I wonder what would happen if the one USB-C Port stop working and there's no other one to use like in Pro

New to Apple Ecosystem! And looking at Macbook 2018

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:42 AM PDT

Hey all! Like the title says, i'm new here! And I'm confident I'll own a Macbook in October when Apple releases the new "800$" Macbook. I have already started saving. I have quite few questions. And would love to discuss what to expect with people who are waiting with me for October release :)

Facts I've found so far through rumors:

    • The 13'' model will have Coffee lake processors which is said to be 30% faster than the old ones
    • And it's Quad-core. So, there is gonna be pretty high performance boost
    • There will be a drastic improvement in Battery. I'm not sure how much did a single charge Macbook battery last before. Could anyone comment on that?
    • The entry level model is rumored to be around "699$ - 799$" and don't think we can expect more than 128GB SDD for that price. So, expect to pay around 999$ if you need 256$ model :)
    • The RAM is pretty much gonna be 8GB. And it would again bump up the price to 1200$ if it's gonna be 16 gigs!
    • There might be an option for LTE, but not sure

A little about why I'm switching to Mac and what i'll be doing. I'm a Data Scientist. I'm planning to start writing my Master thesis this October in my new Mac. I'm a bit active on Kaggle (site for Machine learning projects) and also few projects of my own. I do freelancing work too, so I'll be on the go mostly, hence, need a pretty decent looking, battery efficient model :)

    Questions:

    • How much does the battery in the old Macs last if you do programming work? approximately?
    • Should I pay for Apple care?
    • How long can I expect to use a model of 16 gigs of RAM, and Quad-core coffee lake processor without feeling much outdated? I know Macs last for quite long, so please give an approximation.
    • How about the resale value of the Mac? Let say I sell after 3-4 years, is it possible to get 30-50% of the original cost if the product is maintained properly?
    • Would you guys expect me to go for another model? or update some hardware?

I can't wait to use a mac! Been in love for quite some time! And it physically hurts to not own one of those smooth machines! Please discuss things I have missed out to mention :)
