LPT: if you’re looking for a movie to rent/watch, you can pull down the search bar on your home screen, enter the name of the movie, and the search results will tell you every app you can watch the movie in, even if the app is not currently installed on your phone.

TIL in macOS you can write the day and time at the end of a reminder

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:27 PM PDT

Go to Reminders and write something like "Soccer sunday 2 PM" and hit return/enter. The title will be changed to "Soccer" and the date set for the reminder.

You can make it "Soccer at 2 PM sunday 1 PM" to have a reminder "Soccer at 2 PM" which will ring an hour before the game starts.

Do you think Apple will remove the TouchBar going forward or do you think they will stick with it?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:28 AM PDT

I sold my 2015 MBP to get the top of the line 2017 15" MBP w/ TouchBar. I constantly feel like my 2015 out performed this machine on many levels and I basically NEVER use the touchbar and I accidentally activate Siri about 10 times a day when hitting the delete key.

Do you like it? Do you think they will go back on it? I might be stuck with this machine for a long time but I kind of hope they do something else and I bite the bullet and get another new machine cause this one has been a disappointment. Also, I am constantly worried about the keyboard issue and I hope it doesn't happen to me :|

Some co-op multiplayers games to play with an SO?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:44 PM PDT

Hey guys, what would you suggest for games to play with your SO? I don't mind a genre as long as it's fun!

I know there are guides on the internet but those are outdated games for the most part.

    Non email Apple ID

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:20 PM PDT

I got an Apple ID back in the days when it didn't have to be an email address, and it was MobileMe. My email was my.nameATme.com, and my Apple ID was just my.name. I then became a developer, and so my Apple ID was my dev ID. Then when iCloud came along, my Apple ID became fragmented, my iCloud was associated to my full email but my dev account was my old Apple ID. All fine for some years. I've just had to renew my dev account and I was told I had to change my Apple ID to an email address that was affiliated with that acccount - would I like to use my support email account affiliated. Sure, says I.

Now I have a bunch of apps I bought on the old Apple ID that I can't update because the old Apple ID isn't recognised any more and I can't find a way to update it, or any documentation about it.

Any ideas anyone would be much appreciated!

MBP 2011 - I know about the GPU issues and have some quick questions that I'd love some much more skilled and intelligent people to consider.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:01 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I posted a few weeks ago asking about a 2011 MBP. I really want to keep a Mac in my life

Now, I know of the issues with the discrete card. This is what I'm anxious about.

I am friends with the previous owner and he has stated that he did a replacement just about a year or so ago to "reseat" the graphics card in the system.

Now I also know that no fix actually fixes the bloody thing.

Problem is, I cannot afford a newer model without this issue.

So what I've tried to do is look at non-nuclear solutions. specifically the gfxcardstatus app which SEEMS to be working.

When I look in activity monitor, it says Chrome "requires high performance GPU" which also shows up under the battery indicator as "Uses significant energy", however when I have the activity monitor up even with these two notes, under "Graphics Card:" it specifically says "Integrated"

Now I know if it's using both, because I'll almost exclusively use the laptop for Chrome, Pictures and movie editing, I'm almost for sure going to be hooped in the long run. But then, I don't know. I haven't found anything that shows what the chances are, maybe there's just nothing noted? I don't know.

But if ActivityMonitor is reporting the integrated card only, is that enough or is that not a fully proper indicator?

Also, because I do plan on doing some relatively intensive tasks, if the MacBook uses ONLY the integrated card, am I in an even worse situation? Is it just going to be miserable using the integrated card?

I'm considering doing the linux boot CD/flash drive option at some point, but if it's going to make everything else miserable to use, do I really want to take the risk?

I have until mid July when he's back from vacation to decide. I really want a mac, and there's no world where I'll be able to afford another solution to get something that's actually got some zing to it (it's a 2.2 i7 processor with an SSD and 8gb of RAM) but I'm so torn.

    I'd love some thoughts.

    Thanks!

    Can't erase stolen iPhone (offline)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone. My phone was stolen several days ago and it wasn't activated yet. It shows in Find My iPhone, but it doesn't connect or show as online for some reason. Assuming the person who stole it guessed the password, it will then go into lost mode/play sound/ show location when it is connected to wifi, correct?

TIL Apple made an App Review Guidelines Comic Book

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:02 AM PDT

The book contains the text of all the App Store review guidelines set in typical comic illustrations. There are 5 sections with different art styles corresponding to the 5 sections of the guidelines. Even without a story, the art is very well done.

    See here: https://devimages-cdn.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/App-Review-Guidelines-The-Comic-Book.pdf

Attention to detail in the Photos app on iOS

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:27 AM PDT

When a video is playing and you start scrolling to the right or left (don't lift your finger), the audio gradually fades out; it fades back in as you scroll the video back to the centre.

It's a subtle effect that most people probably wouldn't even notice; rarely do people scroll away from a video before it ends. I love such attention to detail.

Is there a demo video of TV app on iPad?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:17 PM PDT

I've been searching the webs, but can't seem to find a demo of iPad showing the new TV app. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Background: I love the idea of content aggregation. I want an 'up next' interface for all my shows across content providers. Unfortunately I don't have any Apple products to take advantage of this awesome feature, so I'm thinking of buying an iPad mini to solely run TV app to cast to my Chromecast Ultra. Should I stay away from mini 3? 2? Should i just get an ipod touch to run it?

    Thanks folks!

How to Transfer PDF's to IPAD 3?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:27 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I was wondering, what is the best way to transfer PDF's to an IPAD 3?

This ipad does not have airdrop and itunes 12 removed the Books feature to transfer manually. I used to transfer files using a bluetooth app called Shareit when I had a PC, but I have a hard time using it now because I switched to Mac.

Does Wi-Fi Assist ever work for you?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:32 PM PDT

Do I understand how it even works correctly? The text under the option in iOS 11 states: "Automatically use cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor."

This never seems to happen. My home Internet connection will often drop out, but my iPhone and iPad (both LTE enabled with this option enabled) will just report server not found, and "Are you connected to the Internet?" type errors. To get my connection to switch to LTE, I have to bring up the control center and disable Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi assist on, I shouldn't have to do that -- Am I missing something?
