    iOS 12's performance is phenomenal

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 07:49 AM PDT

Holy cow I didn't expect this at all. Installing iOS 12 the moment the public beta went live thinking all sorts of things will go wrong, but boy was I wrong.

The performance is smooth and fast, and so far, after 20 hours with it, I feel like it's just an improved iteration of iOS 11.

I haven't encountered any problems so far; but a few minor imperfections should be noted: I saw people mentioning Apple Store downloading status is stuck in the spinning wheel, and yeah I faced that as well, but it's minor; downloading and updating work just fine. Some lines in apps are distorted; but I guess that's not iOS 12's fault; optimization from app developers would fix the problem.

Here's to hoping that iOS 12 will be this great for the next 3 months till the final published version is available because I installed it on my main and only phone.

Kudos to Apple. iOS 12 is just perfect, in my opinion.

The next AirPod case should have a tiny speaker that beeps when you tap a corresponding "Find my AirPods" icon on the Apple watch or iPhone control center.

    Photo

I bought it on the day of release 8 years ago: June 24 2010.

I'm not against getting a new phone, I've maintained that I would simply get an update when this one dies on me or is no longer functional on a day-to-day basis.

It's been working perfectly ever since. Even the battery life is fine. iOS is 7.1.2.

Mugged at knifepoint - Steps that will lessen the impact

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 01:36 PM PDT

Given a few concerning posts here recently by Redditors sharing their experience of having been mugged and compelled to give up their passcode along with the phone, I thought I would share a list of what I have done to harden my iPhone X to limit the damage that such an event may cause.
    Let me know your thoughts.

    • Set an iOS passcode that is greater than 8 numbers (or you could set an alphanumeric one)
    • SIM PIN. Set one that is different from the iOS passcode. This stops the thief using the SIM in another phone, running up a large bill or attempting iCloud account recovery.
    • Use iOS Restrictions to disable changing the iCloud account on the phone, disable removing location services and disable installing apps or deleting apps (such as Find My iPhone). It's quick enough to turn off for the odd time you need to install/delete. Obviously the Restrictions passcode should be different from the iOS passcode.
    • Do not setup the email for your iCloud ID on the iPhone. This is to avoid the thief using your own account recovery against you - they'll get the iCloud account emails on the phone.
    • Remove your home address, birthday, alternate numbers and email address from your own entry in Contacts. This stops fraud attempts and them coming to your home with further demands.
    • Remove personal information from photos and from Notes. I sometimes take photos of important documents, such as passport and payslips. These have been removed.
    • Disable Control Center without FaceID / TouchID. This stops someone who finds the phone from putting it into Airplane mode.
    • Disable Siri from Lock Screen. I don't use Siri anyway.
    • Make a list of those apps that you are logged into with a username/password. e.g. Amazon, Netflix, MeetUp etc. Change the password on all those accounts as soon as possible after losing the phone.
    • Disable 2FA on the Apple iCloud account. Controversial, but it appears that knowledge of the passcode and possession of an iDevice is enough to hijack an iCloud account.
    • Make a plan for what you're going to do when confronted by someone who demands your phone and PIN. Give it to them - nothing is worth getting stabbed/shot over. Get to a secure PC and set the phone into Lost Mode as soon as possible. Change passwords on all accounts.

Finally, can we suggest to Apple that they enable a duress code feature - that is a user-set passcode which appears to unlock the phone but in fact puts it into Lost Mode after two minutes or so (configurable).

    Thank you.

    Huge shoutout to Apple Support!

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 09:33 AM PDT

Many of you might already know of it, but to those who don't, there's an official app called Apple Support on the App Store. Today, I made an accidental in-app purchase. Touch ID authenticated it before I could hit cancel.

Obviously, I panicked, and after searching frantically on Reddit for a while, got to know of this app. It offers live chat support. Within moments, I was connected to an Apple Support employee, who assisted me with my problem. He promptly arranged a refund, and also helped me with certain other queries that I had regarding Payment Information and Family Sharing.

These guys, and Apple in general are doing a great job of assisting their customers. I've been an Apple customer for a long time, and it's their fantastic after-sales support that makes me stay, and always will.

To those having any queries with their devices, using this app is just as helpful and more convenient than making a trip to an Apple Store.

iOS 12 "App-limits" not really user friendly

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:25 AM PDT

I really looked forward to try out the new "App-Limits" feature in iOS12 to contain my addictive reddit/IG/YT behaviour. But I think it's really confusing and not user friendly:

Wouldn't it be far easier to just be able to select the specific apps you would like to have a limit on?

The biggest problem I have is these categories like "Education", " Entertainment", "Social Networking" etc. as (for me) it's not clear at all which app belongs to which category. And maybe I would like to use IG for 1h but FB for 2h but they're probably both in the same category of apps "Social Networking" and therefor it's not possible to set individual times.

So my workaround to this, is to add all the apps I don't want to have restrictions on in the "Allways allow" section, to be able to have restrictions on the three specific apps I want restrictions on. This is really dumb and complicated!

Maybe I have overlooked something big and would be really glad to be enlightened.

What are your thoughts on the usability ot this feature?

Apple Support confirmed to me that Curated Playlists aren’t guaranteed to come back once you cancel your Apple Music subscription.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 04:27 PM PDT

I had a free Spotify Premium subscription for the past year so cancelled AM early last year. Last week I resubscribed as I do prefer AM overall, especially their curated playlists (My Favourites Mix, My New Music Friday, My Chill Mix) as they nail what I enjoy so well.

When I resubscribed, a few of my albums were still in my library (most were gone), a couple of playlists were left but were empty, and in the For You section there were no curated playlists. After a discussion with Apple Support, they told me that after cancelling AM, curated playlists are not guaranteed to return.

    Screenshot of Apple's reply

That's a real shame, as that was one of the best features in my opinion. Anyone else had this problem?

How exactly will Carplay get updated?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 06:55 AM PDT

I just ordered an Apple Carplay aftermarket system. (Sony XAV-AX100.) How will that get updated to feature Google Maps? Does Sony have to do something? Will there a firmware update to install? Do I just have to update my phone?

Is there a more reliable way to access Apple News’ World Cup feature?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 07:29 AM PDT

I find this happens a lot with multi-day events in Apple news. First day of the event, the spotlight is on the (in this case) World Cup section, and then afterwards you have to flip through the "Spotlight" section and hope that an article has been posted that will lead you too the full coverage.

Is there a better way to get to it?
