An Apple authorised reseller opened up my iPhone 7 Plus and found handwriting on the inside

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 07:21 PM PDT

Need some input on this weird situation.

I've been having problems with Siri. When I want to talk to Siri, sometimes the bar at the bottom is all wavy and colorful as if it's hearing a lot of noise even if there is total silence. The issue comes whenever the iPhone is exposed to steam or a bit of moisture. E.g. if I wash my hands and a bit of steam rises and the phone is on the window sill above the sink, semi-exposed to a bit of steam. Siri can't hear anything I say unless I leave the phone on a bench for a few days and slowly it comes back and eventually starts working again. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere, like I left my phone in my car while at work and came back at the end of the day and the issue was there with no moisture, so I'm not 100% sure of the cause. I updated the software, reset everything, turned Siri on and off, and the problem persisted.

I took it to an official Apple store hoping to get it repaired or replaced and they just cleaned it. The issue persisted even after I treated it like gold, avoiding any exposure to moisture, and they just cleaned it again. The issue came back again so I took it to a different store, this time an official reseller, and they opened it up and found handwriting on the inside and a missing screw and they said it looks like a 3rd party has opened it up. Honest to god, I have NEVER opened up my iPhone and I NEVER took it to any 3rd party. No one other than the official Apple store and the reseller have ever opened it up. But they're telling me the warranty is probably void because of that. What should I do? I don't know what to do if the issue comes back again.

edit: additional info: I bought my iPhone 7 Plus brand new from an Apple store, also it has never been underwater or dropped

edit2: I don't know why my replies aren't showing up. Mods pls

Apple should develop a “service mode” or similar that doesn’t require you to give over your passcode and disable Find My iPhone when leaving your phone for a Genius Bar appointment.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 11:13 AM PDT

On Find my iPhone; I'd always thought the requirement to disable this when leaving your phone behind the counter service was a little odd but also kind of cool that it can't possibly be disabled without my input.

Giving over my passcode on the other hand always feels totally bizarre. That person now has complete access to my phone. Work emails, personal emails, photos, Apple Pay, text messages - the lot. If your device is replaced out after a failed repair the old data-laden phone is then left with staff indefinitely, and without Find My iPhone cannot be remotely wiped.

It hit home when reading this post from u/clumsygirllovescats and this comment from u/_Ventus just how much untraceable damage could be done.

7 employees fired for AirDropping customers' photos onto their own devices - this is obviously something Apple is aware of (at least on some level), why haven't they done something about it? A "service mode" that allows complete access for repairs but not to photos, etc seems entirely achievable?

Just a heads up for new iOS 12 beta users. You can’t backup iOS 12 beta and use that backup to restore data to iOS 11

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I'm seeing comments where people are not sure whether downgrading iOS 12 beta to iOS 11 allows them to restore that data.

You have to first make an iOS 11 backup and store that backup somewhere else on the computer just in case you decide to backup your phone using iOS 12 beta.

Apple support also states this clearly, but I'm just posting this as a heads up if you still aren't sure.

iOS 12 beta backups aren't backwards compatible with iOS 11

If you never backup your iOS 12 beta you won't overwrite the iOS 11 backup so you can restore it and that would work,

but making an iOS 12 beta backup overwrites whatever iOS 11 backup was made for your iPhone, and that's definitely not backwards compatible if you want to downgrade to iOS 11 and restore your data. So make sure to archive that iOS 11 backup somewhere on the computer so you can use that to restore.

    Hope this is somewhat clear.

Also if anyone knows about iCloud backups. If that's separate to iOS?

Taken from cnet they say "iCloud backups aren't backward compatible, meaning you can't downgrade to iOS 11 and use an iCloud backup created with iOS 12 to get your apps, messages and photos back."

Despite having only 2GB of ram, now when you open a 3rd app on top of 2 side by side apps you can still interact with all of them, just like on the Pro models. Hope this stays in the final build

    MyPanera Now Supports Apple Wallet/Pay!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 04:18 PM PDT

Recently, I ordered a meal using Panera's app and noticed an "Add to Wallet" button on the confirmation screen. I tapped it, and, sure enough, the app displayed the usual screen to add the pass to wallet. It even supports Apple Pay. I haven't used it in a physical store yet, but here's hoping it works!

Here's a link to Panera's website that explains how to add the pass: MyPanera in Apple Wallet

What was the goal of Safari on Windows?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2018 04:11 PM PDT

I was rewatching old keynotes and Jobs said they wanted to expand their browser market share, but what's the benefit? The only thing I can think of is that if their browser was better than Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc. than Windows users might be enticed to buy a Mac and experience other OS X apps.

edit - thank you everyone for your enlightening answers.

The fastest way to add reminders without Siri’s voice control

    Posted: 26 Jun 2018 12:18 AM PDT

If speaking to Siri to add reminders is unreliable for you, you can still make use of Siri to quickly add reminders for you:

    Prerequisites:

    Add a reminder:

    • Activate Siri
    • Typing "rmt" basically expands itself to: "Remind me to" — type the rest — "Remind me to [pick up Henry in 2 hours]"

Works perfectly on iOS and macOS every single time.

    Edit: Grammar.
