I found who stole my iPhone using a personal data request from Apple

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:22 PM PDT

I've made a couple of data requests to Apple over the last couple of weeks, learning more about how they respond to these. The dump of data I got this morning included AppleCare records showing that someone had rocked up at an Apple Store and paid for a repair job on my stolen phone. In order to do so, they had to leave a bunch of their own details with Apple.

Pretty cool that a stolen phone from two years back can reappear like this; it seems likely I'll be able to get a handle on who took it, or at least who has it now.

I wonder, should people who steal phones have to consent to Apple storing their data?

I wrote up what I did, and what I was sent earlier today.

He's still not happy about it, and it seems like Apple at least has fully replaced the iMac and requested he send the broken VESA mount back to them so they can examine it further. So hopefully they're taking it seriously now?

Useful tip: when using the calculator app on an iPhone, if you press the wrong key, swipe the number screen to the right and it will erase the last digit that you put in

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:06 AM PDT

I read about this one on a website and to this day I use it, yet a lot of people I know who use iPhones didn't know this one. So I thought of spreading the knowlegde (even if it might have been posted here before)

For any city dwellers sitting on the fence about the AirPods who haven’t yet committed to a pair of Bluetooth headphones

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:16 PM PDT

I've had mine for 3 days. There have been some pleasant surprises with them, the sound quality being one of the best among them. To me, they made my EarPods kinda pale in comparison. And yet I'd not settled in on them as a truly sound purchase until tonight when, in my NYC apartment, they remained perfectly connected when I left my phone in my bedroom to get something from my kitchen, my music playing softly and entirely uninterrupted.

I don't know about other major cities, but headphones are life here. We wear them absolutely everywhere. People chill at bars solo and wear them just sipping a drink, minding their business and no one bats an eye. And in our apartments (at least the ones where we give a shit about how loud we are/are not) headphones are especially important to us. They give us freedom. And I stood in my kitchen in amazement that I didn't have to take my phone anywhere in my apartment to remain connected. Even more freedom. That's what just sold me.

I'm sure other people have enjoyed this freedom with other brands of Bluetooth headphones. But this is for any other city folk who, like me, were fine with wired headphones and not sure about the AirPods.

They aren't necessarily without their faults. A method of volume control would be nice without having to interface with anything other than the AirPods. But honestly, the advantages are so numerous that it doesn't really matter much.

    Edit: wording

    Classic Mac Icon Shirt

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:42 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I was planning on heading out to WWDC this year but unfortunately my plans fell through. I was planning on swinging by the corporate store to grab this shirt I saw on Twitter a few weeks back that really caught my eye, if anyone nearby could pick one up for me I'd owe my life to you.

PM me if you're interested, I use PayPal and I'm in the States.

    Thanks!

For anyone running into issues with their default iOS keyboard freezing or running slowly (especially on the Reddit website), this fixed it for me on my iPhone 6s...

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:47 AM PDT

Settings > General > Keyboard > Smart Punctuation > OFF

What is "Smart Punctuation?" It's that annoying thing that turns this: -- into this: — or turns normal quotes: " into curly quotes "" (i.e. something I hated as a programmer and writer anyway! By the way, you can get to these manually by holding your finger down on the hyphen key or double quote key...)

After disabling this—well, for the first time in months, I've been able to make a Reddit post on my phone without wanting to pull my hair out. My phone actually feels new; even a lot of the general slowness I was experiencing and chalking up to bad support for my phone being "old" is legit gone. If you've been running into the same issues, please, give this a shot.

How I found this out for anyone interested...

After getting mad at it for the last time, I tried downloading a 3rd party keyboard and ran it through some tests (typing something long, going back with 3D Touch, deleting a bunch here, adding a bunch there, which is mostly where the problem would manifest itself); well, it didn't freeze at all on it, so the issue was likely within the iOS keyboard itself. So, going back to the default keyboard, I tried disabling every feature (within the same settings as above) and noticed that it ran WAY faster (and didn't lag/freeze either), so I then tried disabling every feature individually and pinpointed this "Smart Punctuation" nonsense to be the issue... (I should note, I have "Predictive" off as well, as I like the screen real estate, so I can't say whether or not it, too, may cause issues)

Hopefully this helps anyone who's had the same problem, because even though I love my 6s, I was minutes away from buying a new phone out of sheer frustration (all the wrong reasons!).

Also, sorry for the click-baity-ass title.

[Self promotion Saturday] After Programming for 4 months my first puzzle platformer Bouncing Pixel is released!

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 12:21 AM PDT

    Hi!

I began programming in late January when my first programming course began at university. Now I've released my first puzzle platformer. The course I took at university was given in C#, however this game is written in Lua using Corona SDK.

The game, called Bouncing Pixel is a retro inspired puzzle platformer with so far 50 challenging levels (more to come). The graphical style is kinda similar to Adventure (Atari) but a bit more colorful. The games levels are spread out among 6 different colour themes.

The game is available so far just for iPhones, iPad and maybe tvOS version are in the works. I've received some feedback about the game and it's supposed to look quite good using the fullscreen on iPhone X. Should also work good on other iPhones.

If anyone wants to play Bouncing Pixel it's free and available from this link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bouncing-pixel/id1387311478?ls=1&mt=8

Here's a short trailer of some puzzles in the game: https://youtu.be/lpvBzb_EBNA

I'd appreciate any feedback and I'll try to answer any questions if anyone has those. Hopefully you'll enjoy the game :)

What are you using with Time Machine in 2018?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:46 PM PDT

Hello all - I've finally given up on using Time Machine with my Time Capsule. For years, it was perfect. It backed up all of our household Macs over the network silently and effortlessly. As you know, that's been dead, or at least very unreliable since Sierra came out. At first, like many, I thought it was just a bad disk and replaced the Time Capsule's hard drive. Of course, that didn't work. Now I get the dreaded "verification" message every several days despite reformats, etc etc etc.

Obviously using a network drive would be nice. I imagine a NAS, or a drive connected to a new, different wireless AP would have similar issues to the Time Capsule. So...I guess I'm down to using a portable hard drive like a heathen. I have to back up an iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. It would be a PITA, but I guess I'd like to use the same device for all and physically connect them monthly. What drives do you recommend these days? I have an older WD My Book Duo that I use for my iTunes library that could be repurposed (I'm using iTunes in the cloud now) or I could leave that alone and just buy another drive....looking for suggestions on drive or strategy. Thanks!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:52 AM PDT

I just learned about a Searchlight-esque app for Mac called Alfred. I love Spotlight and can't imagine a better version of it. Does anyone here use Alfred? Is there a reason to use it over Spotlight in 2018?

iPad Pros in the Fall—skip A11X, straight to A12X?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:09 AM PDT

I got to thinking with the rumors that updated iPad Pros won't make an appearance at WWDC but rather they will pop up in the fall—would it make sense for them to get an A11X chip (assumed succession) when iPhones would be debuting at the same time with an A12 chip? Is there any precedent for this scenario in the past? My only other guess was that the Pros could get a standard A12 to match.

Anyone else hate the new photo markup version? Used to be able to draw straight lines, squares and circles and angle them easily. Now can’t? Why?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:35 AM PDT

I love(!) the feature where Mail on iOS changes account depending on who you're emailing. Why is this not also a feature in MacOS or have i missed this?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:57 AM PDT

Mail on iOS remembers what account you used the last time when emailing a person, and automatically changes to send from that account.
