Smart Keyboard dramatically changes how you use the iPad

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 03:14 AM PDT

Just thought I'd share a few observations after buying a Smart Keyboard over the weekend.

I've had my 10.5" Pro since July last year, but have always used it like any other iPad. I use the Pencil a fair amount for notes and some photo editing, but have never wanted to use the iPad for any serious work.

Although it's only been a couple of days with the keyboard, suddenly I understand how it can be used for productivity. Annotating text in a journal article with the pencil, pulling up Word from Spotlight and writing a paragraph of an essay is suddenly not only doable, but easier than doing it on my laptop.

Keyboard shortcuts in apps are fantastic - being able to create tabs, find on the page, perform a search, cycle through tabs in Safari without touching the screen makes everything much faster.

But I think by far the biggest advantage is suddenly you have about double the usable vertical space in landscape. It makes editing documents, adding charts and images etc actually pretty easy. Before, it felt like a fight trying to navigate the UI whilst also having the keyboard popup every few seconds when editing something.

There are some disadvantages - primarily being that having the Smart Keyboard attached doubles the thickness and adds a lot of weight relative to the iPad itself. On balance, I think this is worth it, but might switch back to my Smart Cover when I know I'm just going to be using it for reading or watching films.

I won't be replacing my MacBook Pro anytime soon - iOS still needs Xcode, Adobe CC suite, FCP, and desktop-quality Office apps (why can't I add a bibliography on Word for iOS?!) for that to happen. But my iPad has gone from a consumption device which I'd occasionally use for work if I had no other choice, to something which is actually useful, especially when combined with all its inherent advantages like portability, camera for scanning and great battery life.

If you're on the fence, I highly recommend trying one out.

Does Adobe Have too Many iOS apps?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 08:13 AM PDT

Is anyone else confused/overwhelmed with Adobe's IPad offerings? They offer a lot of similarly named apps that do seemingly similar things. Plus, the branding of "photoshop" or "illustrator" really isn't that helpful cause the apps don't do that much compared to their desktop parents.

Idk what the solution really is. I know it's unreasonable to think Adobe could make full fledged versions of their apps for the iPad, but even compared to other stuff on the market it seems like they are sorely behind. It seems like they are trying to reach a more casual audience with these very limited and focused apps, which is great, but seems like they should also have something a bit more meaty, especially with iPad pros that can definitely handle it.

    Hey guys,

What kind of hard zippered sleeves are you all using? Amazon is kinda dry for the more durable ones. Thanks!

Is there an escape key equivalent on the Smart Keyboard?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 06:49 AM PDT

Just realized that there's no dedicated escape key. What's the workaround?

Buy an iPad Pro 10.5" now or wait for the new generation?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 05:15 AM PDT

Hi! This is my first post here so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I'm considering buying an iPad Pro 10.5", primarily for art purposes, but also for some note taking. I would be getting the 64gb one as money is kind of tight. Would I be missing out on a lot of stuff by not waiting for the new release, or would the 10,5" still be a good device despite the new rumored iPad? I'm not sure if I can even afford the new iPad when it comes out anyway, something that would force me to wait even longer. Any thoughts?

Edit: thanks to everyone, so far, for your insight. It's going to be hard to wait, but you've got some good points :) Crossing my fingers for a June announcement.

Is it better for my battery life to leave the iPad “on” (sleep) when I’m away for several hours or turn it completely off and boot up when I need it?

Strange charging/general USB problem out of nowhere

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 07:34 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

So i had the 2017 iPad 9,7" for about 4months now. Yesterday (a day after i installed ios 11.3) my iPad won't charge anymore.

If i shut it off and charge it that way, it charges to 7% or 12% and then powers on by itself. I can't charge it over 12% anymore, most of the time it's 7%. I have to shut it down while the cable is plugged in. If i plug it in when it's turned off, it powers on instantly, indicating that it recognizes that a cable is being plugged in.

The iPad doesn't recognize that i'm charging it while its powered on at all. (No charging Icon anywhere)

Additionally, when i connect it to my PC, Windows doesn't recognize the device anymore. I tried another charger and a cable, both original. My port on the iPad is pretty clean. I still tried to clean it but the problem persists.

I tried everything i found on Google, including:

    • Restart Device
    • Hard Reset Device
    • Reset all Settings
    • Try other cable
    • Clean Lightning Port

I can't downgrade to an older iOS version since the PC doesn't recognize the iPad anymore.

    Anyone with the same problem?

What is the best note taking app with the Apple Pencil.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:30 AM PDT

I will soon be getting the new 9.7 inch iPad and an Apple Pencil. I currently use OneNote on my air 2. I like it well enough, but I feel like the drawing and annotations could be better. I'm just looking for which note apps y'all use and why y'all use them.

My usage will mostly be in a classroom setting and for college studies.

    (Regular) iPad for college

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:17 AM PDT

Hello, I'm thinking on buying the regular iPad for college, I'll just use it to edit and create documents, surf the web, read books, nothing "big", and I wanted to know if the iPad will be a good alternative to a computer for this kind of things, is it good with multitasking or too slow? Are the office apps good? Thanks

Just upgraded to an iPad Pro 10.5 from an iPad 4th gen and wow

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 12:04 PM PDT

I had been using my old iPad 4 for school. I used it for about 7 months and my digitizer broke and instead of fixing it I bought an iPad pro and the difference (as expected) is amazing. I can do everything twice as fast without having to refresh every single app after leaving it,pages to safari for example. Now I just have both apps at the same time. I'm amazed with this iPad and so glad I made the seitch because I was suffering with the iPad 4.

iPad Keynote: How do you stop drawings from connecting to nearby drawings?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 12:49 AM PDT

So I wanted to test out the new Drawing ability in the updated iOS Keynote and for a bit it was awesome. But when I wanted to have multiple drawings to "animate" on the screen one after another I noticed something really annoying:

If I draw a new picture or shape too close to, or over, another drawing, the two snap together into one object. And I can't find a way to separate them into their own elements. I want them to animate at their own intervals, but because they all snap together as a singular object they just animate together.

Has anyone figured out a way tos top this?

About the upcoming iPad Pros (2018)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 08:58 PM PDT

Lots of talk and rumours on the next generation iPad Pros. Bezel-lite displays, Face ID, removal of home button are some of the features expected to be included.

But how likely is it that Apple will launch it at WWDC in June, or will it be launched in September, alongside the "iPhone X Plus"?

    Any thoughts, rumours or opinions?

    Thanks! 🙂

iPad 6th Generation vs. iPad 5th Generation

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 08:28 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy an iPad, and I don't have a very big budget. I need something for managing my subreddit, writing papers/school stuff, and lots of video consumption and some heavy gaming. I was wondering if the iPad 6th Generation (budget one if anyone's confused) is a better buy than last year's budget model based on what In going to be using it for. I'm aware the main difference is a performance upgrade will that matter?

Edit: Removed a semicolon that was misused because I'm stupid and was trying to be fancy and shit but don't know how to use pretty basic punctuation

Mail.app not syncing read and archived messages between iPad and iPhone

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 08:55 PM PDT

    Hi

I am having an issue with mail not synchronising read and archived messages on the mail.app on iPad and iPhone using iCloud and gmail email accounts

If I receive an email and read it on my iPhone it marks it as read and the badge and lock screen notification goes away, but on my iPad it still shows the badge and lock screen notification until i open mail.app and then it updates and marks as read or archives the message

Is this normal behaviour or should it sync the message as read and archived before i open on another device?

    Thanks in advance

Want to ask about drawing on iPad

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 07:29 PM PDT

I don't know if there's a better sub to ask about this question, I want to ask do you guys draw the entire picture from iPad or is it better to draw it on paper and color it on iPad? (photo scan). Because I never tried drawing on iPad, I don't know what does it feel like, but I know coloring on iPad is amazing, it is better than most coloring tools in real life.

I've just bought the iPad Pro (2nd gen) and it's very powerful. But I'm curious to limitations for iOS versions of Mac/Windows programs

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:21 PM PDT

I get that some apps are going to be only partially fully featured, like say, photoshop or lightroom and that's okay but even then it seems awfully fast, on par with my Galaxy Note 8 for some things and in generally, a lot faster.

What I'm wondering is what are its limitations? I know this seems odd but I've seen some ports of PC games, as in supposedly (For the most part) fully fledged versions of them. And they all run fine more or less from what I've read/seen. My best example is XCom - it's years old, yes but that thing can't run properly on modern day intergrated GPUs for the most part but runs fine on iPad. Which really seems interesting to me.

So what's going on here? Is that a normal level of performance, IE outside of really demanding apps (if there's anything close to CAD on iOS that would be an example) like an art app with 50+ layers with 600dpi or something insane, am I right in expecting the performance to be more or less the same?

    Get new iPad or.....wait!?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 10:23 PM PDT

    Hello!

I was thinking about getting the new iPad Pro with a keyboard (probably an off brand one) and picking up the pencil for school next year.

It is going to be my senior year next year and I am a pre medical student.

Everyone is telling me to just wait until I enroll into medical school which probably won't be for another 2-3 years depending on how I go about my MCAT and application and that the new iPad Pro will be even more stellar and that it would be worth waiting for but I feel like it would be a good pickup but they aren't wrong but I wanted to get your guys view on it!

Currently using a 2015 macbook pro - I love it.

The tip of my Apple Pencil is ever so sliiiiiiiiiiiiiightly askew

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:29 PM PDT

I noticed that the tip of my Apple Pencil is ever so slightly off to one side a bit. Including that metal thing under the tip. The Pencil itself works fine but the askew tip is annoying me for some reason.

Should I get it replaced or no?

Here's what it looks like: https://i.redd.it/8ke37xebwrq01.jpg
