iOS Jailbreak [Meta] Fireside Vol. 2 - Update

[Meta] Fireside Vol. 2 - Update

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 04:52 PM PDT

    Hey /r/jailbreak!

This is just an update to the Fireside Chat Vol.2 we posted last week.

Here is what we are going to do:

Based on the poll we did last week, the "call out" of users/devs with constructive feedback will be allowed on the sub. We got 334 responses, where 277 voted for "Yes", and 45 voted for "No". The other 12 voted for "Other" and left us feedback Link to that here.

Seems like the consensus is that we should allow callouts, with constructive feedback, but also create and enforce more rules around this. In this case, here is what we will do:

    • We are going to add "misinformation" of call-outs (via a post or comment) to the Toxic rule. We think that misinforming users of developers or users, is defamation, for starters, and creates the wrong idea about a person. As such, whenever we remove a comment or post about misinformation, you will be subjected to the banning policy for Toxic content. See the banning policy here. Note that this doesn't apply to things that are outdated, but still relevant to the situation. If it is not relevant to your point, we will remove it, but we will not subject you to the banning policy. We ask that the community please let us know if you see someone misinforming users. Report it via the usual report function, mention us in the #subreddit channel in Discord (mention @Sub Mods), or modmail us.

    • Users whose post only results in bashing will be subjected to the Toxic banning policy.

    • Post that remark the negative qualities of an individual, rather than remarking what they did wrong will be subjected to the toxic banning policy.

    • To expand on the terms "Constructive feedback", we mean a point, and an argument that makes sense, is full of facts (opinions are okay, but that should not be the basis of your post), and can lead the subject(s) to improve.

Again, we are open to any feedback about this or any other issue/matter. Just reach out! Your voices (well, text... Unless you send a voice note) will be heard! Modmail us, or mention us in Discord. We are here for you.

    Until the next time!

    [Meta] /r/Jailbreak needs a restart.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 09:16 AM PDT

    Hello /r/Jailbreak.

I'm trying to make this post as unbiased as I can. I, like everyone here has their own views and opinions on the current drama.

Drama comes and goes here, it's not uncommon sadly. However, it seems every time something happens, the subreddit becomes worse than it was found.

    /r/Jailbreak needs a restart.

I honestly don't really mind if the subreddit goes dark to do this.

/r/Jailbreak (maybe jailbreak community) can't survive unless there is a change in how it operates.

    Moderators:

It's time for a change on how the moderators moderate things around here, and you're going to need the community's help.

You can't moderate without engaging the community. It won't work.

Mods have repeatedly said that this sub is not a democracy when the community disagrees with them. But this is adding fuel to fire.

    Suggestions:

    • Engage with the community more. (The firechats are a great idea but have a flawed execution). I may suggest pushing votes via a website (or better yet, the discord). Allow users to create petitions. This doesn't mean you have to abide by every vote, but it shows where the community stands. (Which is the most important thing).

    • Encourage helpful comments and positivity. I may suggest a flair for 'Verified Helpers' (I saw this somewhere but I can't remember where..) Make a leaderboard and make it competitive. Points can be earned when the OP does !solved to the comment. This encourages less hate, and more helping out.

    • Stop pinning with your username. Instead use /u/jailbreakmods for Meta questions and comments. Communicate with your fellow mods and approve a posting/commenting/pinning with /u/jailbreakmods

    • Automatically remove comments or posts that have a number of downvotes. (This is risky, because brigading can occur but I'm certain the community will support the original post/comment if it's worth something.)

    • Put a greater focus on the Discord/Telegram groups. They are a great community that helps out the people who need help.

Moderators are increasingly becoming more and more detached to the community.

    Developers:

I know it may not seem like it, but the community dies without you, and the community thanks you for all of your hard work and attempts. If you care about jailbreaking, this is supposed to be a driving factor.

However I'm not naive. Each developer has it's own driving factor, and no one is supposed to judge..

But please note: Just because you're a developer, it does not mean you are immune to criticism. If a user says that they have a problem, do not question them nor attack. This is not pointing to anyone but it's just a general idea.

    Suggestions:

    • Redirect users to a place where you can answer their questions and get bug reports. Discord is great for this. Redirecting to Twitter is not preferable because they could be lost in the sea of waves. When confronted with a bug: Pull a vote and see if it's isolated or actually part of the tweak. If former, redirect them to the Geniuses™ on the subreddit's discord. If latter, collect bug reports and try to diagnose the problem, do not be afraid to say that you don't know how to fix it. We can understand and people here actually respect you more for that. Maybe do a price reduce if it's a paid tweak, or open-source if it's a free tweak. (Just a thought).

    • It's time to collaborate on a single store. That is owned by someone trustworthy, (Pull a vote with the community, moderators, and your fellow developers.). Or simply, pause on release date until Saurik can open payments.

    • Pateron is not a store. Plain and simple. It's for supporting developers with no strings attached. Purely for helping out. Just keep this mind.

    • You have larger voice in how the sub can run. People respect developers. They will listen to you when you have suggestions. Instead of bashing, help out. It takes everyone to make /r/jailbreak great.

    Community:

It's time for us to change and be more aware of how we post and comment on this subreddit. Before you post. Search for your answers.

    When you post, think:

    • Is my post helpful to the community?
    • Am I hurting the community?
    • Has anyone asked this question
    • Am I attacking someone without proof?
    • Is my post respectful to the person?
    • Is my criticism constructive?

Only we can drive the community somewhere.

    Suggestions:

    • Think before posting.

    • Weed out the eta son kids. When you see lot's of these kids online: respectfully tell them to stop. (Bonus points) if you can tell this in their native language if they aren't native english speakers. Most of the time, they will stop. Try to drown out the bad people. If anyone can provide a template of a respectful way of saying stop in different languages, that would be extremely appreciated

    • Understand that everyone is trying to keep this community alive, THINK before you shitpost.

I know that it is a rather long post, but it needed to come out of my chest. It's important that you read fully.

    Thanks!

Edit: Added more suggestions to developers and moderators.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 06:40 AM PDT

Here is the information, again in question (removed for toxicity???) https://imgur.com/a/EIYTD So, as it turns out, it appears that LaughingQuoll and company are having a bit of fun with this whole event, it appears they are doing it all for publicity. As in the chat linked at the top of this post it shows that Quoll is plotting the now infamous copy and paste tweet, then immediately proceeding to immediately counter that whole thing by showing that this is just a temporary thing. While this is all well and good, they then proceed to basically insult the user who dared to ask for a refund for a buggy tweak that didn't work properly, because you know, they already have your money so why should you get it back for something that doesn't work. They do this by calling him entitled of all things as you can see. The devs are entitled to a break every now and again, no questions asked there, however disguising this all up as a walkout and that they're never going to come back is incredibly deceptive, and quite frankly, kind of disgusting.

He has from time and time again proven unfit to be the authority of this subreddit and I think its time he get put down from this position

    Example 1) https://reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/8afhhh/discussion_serious_question_whats_the_point_in/

    Example 2) https://reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/8ai3gi/discussion_all_the_devs_that_left_recently_arent/

And these are just the RECENT examples (Yes there are other examples in the past, im just posting this because I was involved and it also happens to be the most recent examples) for LaughingQuoll's immaturity and incompetence of being authority of a jailbreak community. How does he expect this sub to get less toxic, if he cant even lead by example?

[Release] FoldersInFolders - iOS 10 and 11 support

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 06:33 PM PDT

    https://saj0vie.github.io/

This tweak enables a Boolean that exists in native iOS 10 and 11 which allows a folder to be made inside of a folder. It does not however allow you to drag folders into folders, but you can go into a folder and make another folder.

Edit: Something on iOS 11 is causing the new folder to be kicked out of the original folder. I will attempt to fix this.

Edit 2: Apple's leftover code which allows nested folders is either incomplete or simply needs other things enabled. Only iOS 10 is supported as of now until I figure this out!

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 05:26 PM PDT

I'm in need of a new phone, and I can't go back to stock. The Best Buy in my area has two iPhone X left with a VQ serial (most likely 11.1.2). However they are charging $1249 for the phone full price. (I have AT&T prepaid and they require unlocked phones otherwise I would lease it, besides I prefer paying in full and keeping my monthly payments low. Either way I'm getting an iPhone X in the near future but I can't really determine if it's worth paying extra for, especially on a phone that is pretty pricey

    [Meta] The /r/Jailbreak Letter

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 11:36 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I am not on the developer-side of the situation, nor the user-based argument. I am simply here as one that enjoys jailbreaking, but I am not enjoying the outcome of the community. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and discussions.

    Dear /r/Jailbreak,

It seems that there has been a recent increase in terms regarding how users and developers interact with each other...

Under no circumstance is someone obligated to work, create, use, or buy from/or another individual—this community is built upon volunteers and hobbyists, not slaves and laborers. (More addressed below).

This community is supposed to be for those who love changing how their devices look and function, not for those who argue about whether a certain product should be priced or whether or not someone should be trusted, unless it specifically is related to jailbreaking. This community is unstable—there is a loose foundation holding up the groundings: arguments, betrayal, hatred—and it's going to collapse (if it hasn't already).

I do in fact know that there are gonna be ones who downvote this, and I will not be surprised. I am surprised though, if you have read this far into this letter; I am proud of you. I am not proud of those members, both developers and users, who fall under the category of hazing and destructing each other just because they do not do what the other asks. There are people who will not understand your point of view; there are people who will not understand what you're going through. Is it arrogance? Is it incompetence? I do not know. However, I do know that this place should be in way better conditions than it is now.

No, I am not saying I am perfect—please, tell me where I said that—I am saying that we all make mistakes, we are human. People are people and sometimes it does not work out, there are times where things just do not go as planned. We should be capable of understanding that times are tough and we should support the work and effort put into this community by everyone involved. This place should be a safe-zone; it should be for jailbreaking only. (Excerpt from subreddit rule eight: "Everybody is here because they love jailbreaking or want to get involved with it.")

To the users: if you do not like a developer, do not corrupt their lives by threatening, bullying, or abusing them—just don't use their tweaks. Nobody is forcing you to, it's most likely just the idea that you love criticizing others, but hate it when it happens to you, just a thought—constructive criticism is okay and welcome, but feedback only listing negatives and downsides does no help and usually leads to more problems, positives and negatives need to balance one another. Bugs and glitches happen in software all the time. It's how the world works. Making a post because the tweak does not work the way you want it to is exceptionally low-effort. Creating a post saying that a developer should not be part of the community and should be removed is wrong—oh look, part of rule four of the subreddit: "'Developer X sucks and here's why', or 'Developer X should behave more like Developer Y' and so on." Interesting. If you encounter a bug, please include as much information as possible. "It crashed, it has bugs, I hate it!" is not useful or helpful in anyway—you might as well be the bug in question.

Fellow developers: do not blame yourselves if a product is not one hundred percent perfect, it's not going to be possible. You are a human, there is no superpower that will help you accomplish such a difficult task. Do, however, try to supply known information regarding bugs if possible. Take a break if need be—nobody is forcing you to create products. You have friends and family, school or work, enjoy your lives outside of a room with a computer. If users do have a request or bug-report, please attempt to look into it. A simple response such as "noted" or "this is being looked at" is all that is needed. "F-ck off" or "shut up, you fix it" is not okay. (Part of rule eight: "Be civil and friendly.") If you do have a priced tweak, consider it a priority. You put time, effort, energy, work, and possibly money into it—don't let it fall because of the lack of support, make it a priority.

Let me say it louder for those in the back: be civil to one another, this place is a community. It is neither just the developers' faults, nor the user-base's, but how both interact with one another: hopes of a good product and developers overwhelmed to developers not behaving properly and users becoming upset. Things happen, they need to be worked out using civil means.

I want to say thank you to the developers who do put effort and time into their tweaks, giving support and updates when needed—it is great to work alongside you. Here is to the users who make it enjoyable to build tweaks and have a base to create for—giving others a chance to do something new. Thank you to the moderators who take the time to manage this subreddit and its contents and users.

TL;DR: both sides of the community (developers and users) are at fault. No civilized people are present, hope is lost, maturity has bottomed out. (/s, the last two points are to lighten-up the mood.) Part of rule eight: "Be civil and friendly" is the rule that has been broken the most.

PS: Look at this post. It contains a great structure for a great community.

This concludes the /r/Jailbreak Letter. Sincerely,

    Simalary (Chris).

[Discussion] This community has always had issues, but what’s happened in the last couple years is because people stopped developing for passion and greed for money took over.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:11 AM PDT

This community has always had issues with immaturity and entitlement, but developers used to make tweaks because they wanted to. It was a passion and tweaks brought people together for a fun thing that most people don't even know about. I'm the last few years developers have started charging for way more tweaks in more ways and more expensive. Greed takes over and it's no longer a hobby, it's a business when it was never meant to be. While there's nothing wrong with charging a coffee or something for a nice tweak, looking at it as a business is wrong.

[Discussion] Consider jailbreaking a necessity or an addiction?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 09:40 PM PDT

From a phycological perspective, what does a having jailbroken device fulfil for you?

Personally, it provides an escape, a stress mechanism of sorts: the ability to harness a near like computer in my pocket, allows me to create a build system to develop free software for iOS on my devices (free as in programs like saurik provides on his repository).

On the lighter side, the utilisation of exploration tools like the Jonathan Levin's all encompassing JTool, saurik's hybrid Cycript Flipboard's fantastic FLEX. Enables John Coates Flex to complement nicely for a semi-permanent runtime patch. Last but not least is TIGI's Powerful File Manager Filza.

All reveal Apple's mysterious ecosystem, that range from third party apps down to the OS kernel. One can easily get distracted with such awesome toolsets, whether your bored, sad, lonely or whatever, and delve into the geeky side.. did I mention all this is in your phone? :)

I am curious what others personal thoughts are, what need/want does jailbreaking provide for you?

Disregard the paragraphs bellow, there are directed at moderators regarding why the drama crap has became so frequent and a simple solution. I only want to talk about jailbreaking here, it's not worthy of creating a new post.

The spate of dramatic events lately is largely related to the absence of charismatic leadership, that held by saurik's tenure and active presence, unsurprisingly a heavy burden with little reward. I urge you to understand it will not change, not with a million posts, consider defeat and adapting to the situation, changing a culture is a extremely difficult process taking years to achieve within an organisation, now consider the same difficulties over a social network... the degree change is too great, academic research has provided little in social networking dynamics and cultural change. Until substantial research provides a solution, a practical approach is required.

I strongly encourage implementing a bot to move any negatory/dramatic/vilifyingly submissions to an appropriate, alternative subreddit, lets call it /r/JailPooh with a link to allow those who enjoy partaking in such matters, a place of discussion. It's a clear and simple solution that requires little effort. It changes mindsets with a realist approach, having the mentality of acceptances (yes we know there's drama) yet a clear stance about where such matters will reside (but /r/jailbreak is no longer for these matters they reside in /r/JailPooh now),
