After a couple days my iPad found it's way near a sketchy business center. One of those stores was a sketchy electronics store. I left the iPad on lost mode and left a message saying that the iPad had been reported stolen and that wireless service had been disconnected (which was a lie) in hopes that they wouldn't turn off the device so I could continue to track it. Seemed to have worked.

I went in asking a girl that worked there if they sold used iPads and she said yes but had to wait for the manager. I came back 30 minutes later and the manager said there were none for sale to which the girl said 'what about the small gray one?' (my exact model). Manager claimed it was broken and not for sale, wouldn't even let me see it, but I didn't want to be too forward or else he'd suspect it was mine. So I leave the store kinda frustrated.

I called the police, an officer arrives 45 minutes later and we walk in together. I sound the alarm and ding ding ding rings through the store. Cop retrieves my iPad and files a police report with the manager. Manager was too ashamed to look my way, f**ker.

So if you find your apple device in a public place, get an officer to escort you as you sound the alarm. It felt so good to get back after having it go missing 5 days ago.

HomePod sounds great—but is there any way to shut Siri up?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:43 PM PST

HomePod is a fantastic sounding speaker, but my biggest gripe with it is Siri. Not Siri's ability to understand me, but Siri's big mouth!

Here's what I mean. Often I'll ask Siri to do something, like "Hey Siri, turn the lights on." What I'd love is for the lights to turn on and that's it. No confirmation from the speaker, just confirmation by virtue of the lights turning on. Instead, what happens is every time I turn the lights on, I have to sit through some obnoxiously loud quip she gives me talking about how she turned the lights on. "All of the lights—you got it!", "All of the lights—coming right up!". If I say, "Hey Siri, goodnight", I'll get "Ok! Goodnight enabled. Let's call it a night!" If I say "Play Beats 1", the music won't start playing until she says "Now tuning in to Beats 1—my favorite radio station on earth!"

When I searched for an answer, it seems the only choice is to mute Siri—which means she can't hear me in the first place, which defeats the whole purpose of the speaker. What I'm looking for is the ability to have Siri always on, always listening, but always silent. I never want her to say anything whatsoever. If I ask her to play a playlist, I want the playlist to play immediately, not for it to play after she cracks a stupid long joke about how she's capable of playing my playlist. If I ask her to turn the lights on, I want the lights to turn on and that's it. And if Siri fails, I don't want to hear some speech about how Siri failed ("Ok! Some of your lights are not responding—for more information, open the Home app!"), I just want the action to not happen, and I'll try again, or figure out why.

Is there any way for me to achieve this? It's honestly really ruining my ability to enjoy using HomePod.

Spotify uses dedicated GPU on Macbook pro 15" (2017)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:14 PM PST

When I first got my MBP 15" I was expecting to get a full day battery life out of it, but it's more like a 3/4 day battery life. Recently I've been monitoring the activity monitor, and the Spotify app switches the graphics card from Integrated to High perf. Would this affect the battery life significantly? The avg energy impact for Spotify is only 1.62, so I doubt it takes up much, but the dGPU probably does?

TIL: Save your screenshot to the Clipboard instead of your desktop, add Control to the key combinations above. For example, press Control-Shift-Command-3 instead of Shift-Command-3.

Press Control-Shift-Command-4 to take a screenshot of a selected portion of your screen and press Control-Shift-Command-3 to take a screenshot of your entire screen to directly copy the screenshot to clipboard instead of saving it as a image on Desktop.

If iPhone X doesn't recognize your face on the first try...

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:41 PM PST

Try tilting your phone down like it's laying on a flat surface and then bring it back up and it will scan again!

I saw a bunch of posts about wishing there was a button we could push to make the phone scan for your face again so i figured this would be helpful. I searched and didn't see, but if this is already known, disregard!

I'm a Canadian living in the US, and I'm going home for the weekend. My dad asked me to bring him home a HomePod. Anyone have any experience using them outside the countries they're sold? Do you think it'll work? Thanks everyone!

iCloud Drive is a total mess with app folders

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:59 AM PST

Discovered Apple doesn't delete old app data or folders that used iCloud Drive before so I'm trying delete them.

I thought they were deleted but it turns out Apple saves all of them and stores them in Numbers (sign into iCloud.com > Numbers > Click on iCloud Drive at the bottom.

There's about 100 app folders for me (mostly all old apps I downloaded/used to use). But there's even apps I've never downloaded or bought before like iA Writer, Clear, etc. There's even duplicates. There's 4 Procreate folders...and I can't delete any of them.

If you hover a folder you have two options (Delete Folder and Rename Folder). Both are greyed out for all the folders except Document and Desktop.

There has to be a way to get rid of these. Anyone know what the hell is going on? This is like Apple cleaning the house by stuffing everything into a closet and I just opened the closet and I'm seeing crap everywhere.

Will LG’s OLED display be better than Samsung’s?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:46 PM PST

Apple has invested over $2.7 billion in LG Display so LG can produce OLED displays for iPhones starting 2019.

Does that mean LG's displays are going to surpass Samsung's in quality? I mean, surely Apple won't dump so much money into LG if they couldn't match Samsung's quality or surpass it, right?

Apple likes to lead when it comes to hardware and be in a league of their own (look at their CPU/GPU, TrueDepth camera system, TouchID, front/back cameras, etc), so if they are going with LG and dumping so much money, I guess it's time to lead in the display department as well. iPhone X's display is already one of the best and with LG's help, they can start manufacturing their own displays that will blow other displays out of the water.

Apple Music subscription expired and unable to play any Music.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:20 PM PST

I let my Apple Music subscription expire and now I am unable to play anything in my library. I cannot play songs that were in my library prior to subscribing to Apple Music. I understand locking the songs that I downloaded via Apple Music but locking my entire library doesn't make any sense. Is there a way to fix this?

Home app invitation stuck with spinning wheel when accepting the invite

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:30 AM PST

I invited my wife to our newly created "Home" in the Home app. The notification pops up, but when we go into the home app, and homes, what's there is "My Home (Guest)" with a spinning wheel and it's been like that for 5 days now. I tried restarting, both soft and hard reboot, turned off then on the "Home" in settings, signed out from iCloud, turned off keychain, cancelling the invite, I even did a complete wipe and restore from both iCloud and iTunes but it's still there.
