    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:42 AM PST

AirPods have the potential to be awesome, but they need some work. They should pair with the device I'm currently using. I shouldn't need to go into settings and reselect them every time I switch devices. If my iPhone is on and being used, don't pair with my iPad!

    Anyone Else Agree?

Android user thinking about getting a iPhone X

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:33 PM PST

I've had Android for around 7-8 years now. Never really owned anything Apple besides a Shuffle from when that came out. Not sure what's attracting me to the X so much. I think I'm just tired on how a lot of the apps I use are generally unoptimized and updates at least on my S7 take forever. For people that went from an Android to iPhone what do you think? And I have a few questions:

1.) I listen to a lot of music and podcasts but don't own any pair of bluetooth headphones. Does the adapter out of the box work well? And can you put FLAC music on the phone through iTunes?

2.) The notch bothers me but I think I can get used to it. Are many apps optimized for it now? And I'm used to a bigger Android screen. Has the size of the screen affected you?

3.) How are games optimized? I play these 3 main games and was curious if they're optimized for the screen: Dokkan Battle, Fate Grand Order, and Love Live School Idol Festival.

4.) I also read a lot. My main thing I did on my Android phone was upload EPUB book files and also use a manga app. Any good apps or alternatives for this?

And that's really about it. Was curious of maybe getting the 256GB version but not sure. I'm a hardcore Spotify user now

    My personal upgrade experience (6-X)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:20 AM PST

Hello everybody, long time lurker, first time poster in here. I know it's not new stuff any of this, but I wanted to share anyways.

I want to share and get some similar/different points of view on upgrading on everyday use tech, as the jump from old iPhone-new iPhone would be.

I've been rocking my iPhone 6 from around European launch till December last year. I ignored the 6s upgrade, didn't think the upgrade was significant enough, and when the 7 came out, I was broke and focusing my economic surplus on different, more necessary things in life. I had a huge crush on the SE, mainly because the size to specs ratio (6s ish specs on the form factor I came from 5s) but eventually settled myself on the screen estate is more valuable long term.

When the X came, I was offered the big model (256) though my company at a very, very reasonable price, and I did it. I do want to state that the X here in Denmark has a whooping 10.249 DKK price tag, which is around $1700.

I'm a recovering gadget addict, but I had to do it. Not because the features and difference between a used 7 and a X is massive, but because the potential and uncompromising spec sheet, and therefore potential in upgrades, was worth it to me.

I LOVE my iPhone X. But the weird thing is the adaption period quickly passed, which is good and bad. It's good because the phone feels natural, Face ID feels natural, new gestures felt even more natural, since I've been jailbreaking since the iOS 5 days, and Zephyr/Tage (swipe up for homescreen) was a must have on my phones.

I still have my simless 6 laying around for music streaming, extra camera on my gimbal (DJI OSMO mobile) and such, and when I pick it up and use it the two main points really pops up. The screen and the weight/size.

The 6 screen feels dull, greyish and almost faded. Day to day, I never notice just how incredible the iPhone X screen really is, until I use another piece of screen equipped piece of tech. I'm getting used to the million to one contrast, the slimmed down bezels and extra 1.1 inch of this beautiful display.

Size wise, I've always had covers on my phones, until the point where they retire and I don't care as much about damages, mostly because I work as a electrician, and I need my phone to be a little more drop proof and rugged than the naked option. My iPhone 6 is now naked, as the way it was born, and it's incredible how slim it actually is, so it's kinda like getting two new phones. I'm using Otterbox Symmetry on the X, and I'm very pleased with it. I had screen protector on the X to begin with, but I took it off, because nasty debris and dust would collect right in the notch area, potentially blocking the IR dot projector and the camera.

Other specs like camera, speed/performance are waaay ahead of the 6, so I won't even get into that. I feel like I'm shooting sparrows with a bazooka, when it comes to camera, I'm not using 4K at all, since the humble equipment I'm editing on won't handle anything above 1080, and I don't even have any panel that'll support 4K anyways, so maybe an upgrade is necessary there, when the time is right.

Oh yeah one last thing; spoiled myself and bought a pair of AirPods, and unlike the adjustment to getting used to a product, these were REALLY a game changer for me. I'm in love with the convince and confidence of being untethered, and it's something I use everyday. It took me a week to get de-adjusted to the habit of making sure my wire wouldn't interfere with tools, cables, hands and such when working, so I'm really pleased and happy about that purchase as well.

Thank you very much for reading though my Friday rambling, and have a lovely weekend :) greetings from Denmark

PSA: August 2nd Gen HomeKit lock down to $100 at Best Buy

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:37 PM PST

Could anyone with an iPhone X who had it for a while give me input on how it feels and hold up?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:38 PM PST

I'm currently in the market of getting a new phone since my ol' Iphone 6 is slowly dying and currently I'm looking at the iPhone X and the Samsung S9+.

I've heard a lot of "don't get the Iphone X" without anything really backing it up besides pricing so if anyone would like to share their experience with the device i would be happy. Pros and cons alike!

One thing i noticed myself is the portrait mode being a tad too blurry for my taste around the edges of faces and the like - Is that a thing that could be fixed through iOS updates or is that just a thing that'll have to stay?

    Thanks in advance!

Does it matter if the HomePod is bought from another county?

Bought a HomePod yesterday and here are my anecdotes.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:18 AM PST

I bought a HomePod yesterday and just wanted to share my own anecdotes.

I really like the physical design. The mesh cover has a satisfying squish to it, the cord is is about 6.5 feet in length, which is adequate (for me anyway), and it has a very solid feel to it. The speaker is quite weighty and feels very durable and very high quality. Absolutely nothing about this device feels low quality or cheap.

The sound quality is quite good but it didn't blow me away like I expected it to (judging by reviews). Maybe I set my expectations too high, but I tried to keep them realistic given the physical size of the speaker and was slightly disappointed. I experimented with a wide assortment of music, from hip-hop to rock, to metal, and jazz, and in bass-heavy songs the bass came across as a little weak in my opinion, but for tracks with tighter/punchier bass it sounds very good. Jazz sounds great! Mids are mostly rich but in a lot of tracks they also seem a bit 'tinny' to me. This seems to vary from track to track, so this may be due to compression (I was using Apple Music for all my music testing), or maybe it was due to the recordings, not sure. Highs sound great! Cymbals are crisp, high hats have good definition, etc. I am by no means saying the sound quality is bad, but it wasn't quite inline with my (probably exaggerated) expectations, and maybe if I experiment more with placement I will see even better results. Currently it sits on a corner of my coffee table, which is in the middle of my living room (some people say that corners are better - will experiment).

I do love how open the sound is, when I crank it up it really does fill the room and the sound stage is great. Jazz sounds absolutely fantastic through this speaker. This morning I said "Hey Siri, play some jazz", I cranked it up, and it genuinely made my morning better as I listened to some jazz, ate some breakfast, and surfed the web a bit before heading to work.

One thing where this speaker absolutely does not shine is when it's being used in conjunction with Apple TV. This is absolutely due to the fact that this speaker is tuned for music and not movies/TV, but I wish that it could auto-adjust for movies/TV when it knows it's being used with Apple TV. It's so bad in fact that my actual TV speakers sound significantly better (though my TV speakers are fairly decent for TV speakers - LG OLED C7 with Atmos). Also, it's fairly annoying using this with Apple TV because every time you switch to listening music, if you want to use it again with Apple TV then you have to go back into settings on ATV and set sound output back to the speaker - every single time. (it doesn't require as many steps as u/yourstrulylucas points out in the comments - you can hold the play/pause button and get a menu to change the sound source - so while still not optimal, it's not quite as annoying as I originally thought)

I never really expected to use this with ATV so it doesn't really affect my overall impression of the HomePod (for me it's definitely a music-first device), but I figured I would test it anyway and include my findings here for people who might be curious.

As far as Siri integration goes I actually have no major complaints, though this is because I don't really demand a whole lot from digital assistants. For me this is definitely a music speaker first and a digital assistant a distant second, but for people who place higher priority on digital assistants they might be disappointed (judging by other reviews). My biggest complaint about Siri is one that someone else posted here recently - I don't want a response every time I request something, just do it! When I say "Hey Siri, play Sea Lion by Sage Francis" I would like it to immediately play the song, not respond with "Okay! I will play Sea Lion by Sage Francis!". It didn't really annoy me much at first, but as I continue using this device it progressively becomes more irritating.

During all my testing with Siri it only failed to hear me once and that was when I spoke super fast as a test. This isn't how I would normally interact with it, so during normal interaction it heard me every single time. I'm also quite surprised how well it can hear me when the music is turned up quite loud. The only minor disappointment was when I asked Siri to turn on my Apple TV and it wasn't possible. Not a big deal, but that level of integration would be pretty cool.

Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase and I think it's worth the asking price, as long as you are an Apple Music subscriber and already in the Apple ecosystem. If I were asked to pull a score out of my bum then I'd give it an 8.5/10.

PSA: If your Apple Watch isn’t unlocking with your iPhone after the 4.2.3 update, make sure the “Unlock with iPhone” setting didn’t turn itself off somehow!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:29 AM PST

After updating yesterday without issue, my Watch started acting up this morning. It didn't want to unlock with my iPhone. I restarted it twice, then restarted my iPhone, I made sure it was snug against my wrist, then I decided to clean up the sensor because it looked a bit grimy, but nope, it still wouldn't unlock without my passcode. So I check the passcode settings and voila, there's my problem. "Unlock with iPhone" was toggled off. I turned it back on, put in the passcode one more time to confirm, and bingo. Fixed. Not sure how the setting got turned off after the update.

Forced Obsolescence: Apple refuse to replace 1st Gen Apple Watch battery - 42SS & 38SS

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:01 PM PST

My wife and I are having issues with battery life on our 1st Generation Apple Watches and because we wear them everyday and don't require a upgrade yet we thought to see whether Apple still offer a battery service for the 1st Gen watches.

Apple Watch Battery Service site: https://support.apple.com/en-au/watch/repair/service/pricing

Sure enough $119 to replace the battery out of warranty. We make a genius appointment and visit the Apple Store.

They ask a bunch of questions about the issue and we tell them the battery life isn't lasting a day and if we work out in the morning the battery is down below 50% before we leave the house and this isn't normal as we'd always get at least 1 day of battery life no matter how much usage including multiple workouts.

They run diagnostics and they return no issue with the battery, weird but not unusual I've got an iPhone 6 that dies in a few hours that also passes their battery test.

They then talk to the manager because they couldn't find an out of warranty battery service and come back to tell us we can't get the battery replaced, the test passed and it will pass when we send it in and they'll just send our watches back with no work done. We asked to speak to the manager to discuss if there was any other option because you're basically telling us until the watch battery is completely dead we have to put up with charging the watch multiple times a day which we never had to do.

The manager wouldn't budge and pretty much only gave us the option to buy new watches at $850-$920 rather than replace the battery for $119. The Genius guys didn't look happy that they couldn't help as they too seemed puzzled that Apple wouldn't let them send the watches in for a battery service and that they website never noted that a battery test would be performed and must fail prior to the battery service being allowed.

Anyway I've put in a complaint into our fair trading ombudsman in the hope that Apple will let me pay them to service the battery in my Apple Watches.

TLDR: Apple offer an out of warranty battery service for the 1st Gen Apple Watch but they don't tell you that it must fail a battery diagnostic test prior to being allowed to pay them $119 for a new battery. Therefore leaving you with no choice but to upgrade and causing forced obsolescence of the 1st Gen Apple Watch after only 3 years.

How to recover lost game progress under the same Game Center account when iOS 10 caused the Game Center app to not exist anymore.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:29 PM PST

I have two iPads. One iPad is updated to iOS 8 while the other is iOS 10. The progress from the iOS 8 one has been replaced by the progress from the iOS 10 iPad. They shared the same Game Center account for a while and there were no problems until I realized something happened to Game Center. I've logged out of Game Center but there's no change. The game is Mini Carnival, and I have some skins I put a lot of effort into making and I loved using. The developers have long since abandoned the game. Is there any way I can retrieve the replaced account without losing the other either? It still exists in the game itself, I just can't access it because there's no login or anything.
