Best apps for beginner graphic design?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:00 AM PST

I've used GIMP on my PC for a while, but I'm looking for something on my iPad to make images for my YouTube/twitch channel and other stuff. Want to be able to specify resolution, and easily add text and icons with different effects and fonts.

iPad Pro or surface pro to go with MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 12:01 PM PST

Alright so I'm in the market for potentially getting a note taking tablet. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with 8gb ram and 500gb ssd it's been solid for me and I have it connected to an external monitor also and it hasn't slowed down for me one bit so I imagine it lasting me a while more. I am a math of computation major looking to continue into programming after i graduate. So the thing that's got my attention for the surface pro is that I'll be able to run and compile code, however I already have a laptop that I can do that with, but when I go to class I only plan on bringing the tablet and not the laptop unless I really need it, so in my computer science classes I won't be able to compile code on an iPad but will be able to on a surface pro, however since my major is mainly math, when I'm not in a computer science class I will be in a math class taking notes with either the Apple Pencil or the pencil that comes with the surface pro. And I've heard the Apple Pencil is much better for taking notes. I will be taking one computer science course and two math courses each quarter at university. I can also always type up the code in class on the iPad then transfer when I get back to my laptop and compile on there. I am mainly leaning towards the iPad but just wanna get more opinions. Thank you.

    Voice commands for music

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:23 AM PST

If I'm in the music player playing a playlist of my songs, what's the easiest way, if possible at all, to get the song to pause or go to the next/last track by voice command?

Writing on Ipad Pro + Pencil is far better than Surface Pro + Pen!

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 04:30 PM PST

In case anyone else is debating between the two (as I was before biting the bullet on the 2nd gen Ipad Pro), here is a writing sample comparison of the Apple Pencil and the Surface Pen (newest Pro version) on Onenote: https://imgur.com/INFKn6b

I've had the Ipad Pro and Pencil for 4 months now, and it's completely replaced paper and pen for me. The writing process feels natural and, most importantly, actually comes out looking like my own [chicken scratch] handwriting. Sadly, even though I was a die-hard Surface Pro fan before this, that and the accompanying Pen have now been relegated to the back burner.

Even when I scribble quickly, the Ipad is able to pick up all my messy scratching and curving, whereas I need to set the Surface Pro sensitivity high and the ink size larger to pick that up. You can notice the significant differences between the top lines of each in the pic. The differences can be minimized by selecting larger ink sizes, but with sacrifice of precision and clean lines.

EDIT: the above is obviously a simplistic view of the end results of the two writing devices. If you wanna get nitty gritty, yes, the Apple Pencil has major issues you can contend:

    • no eraser

    • way-too-smooth writing / mechanical sensation of the hard tip going against glass: this can be either a good or bad point (if you've used the SP before, this may be hard to get used to after the pen-on-paper like sensation with the Surface Pen; on the other hand, you may love the feeling)

    • feels too smooth in the hand / no grip edges: I bought a rubber grip off Amazon and it's made a huge difference

Here are some more writing comparisons "in the wild" between the two devices from my old notes for the non-believers: https://imgur.com/a/JcHzW

    Hope this helps someone!

iPad Pro 2017 or wait until new iPad release?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 06:44 AM PST

I was interested in purchasing an iPad pro but recently learned that there is a possibility of a new one being released sometime this fall. Should I wait or just go ahead and purchase the pro that is currently on the market?

Is there any way to get controller support for the iPad 2?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:14 AM PST

Got an iPad 2 for dirt cheap. It plays all the games I want surprisingly well, but heard it has no mfi controller support.

Anyone know of a way to get controller support? Via jailbreak or other means? Has Apple added any mfi support to older iPads I'm unaware of?

I'm upgrading from iPad 3 to the 2017 version. Anything I should know?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 03:47 AM PST

Hello all, I'm an art student at University and ever since I've started using my iPad to take notes I've fallen in love with the feel of the touchscreen and how easy it makes the documentation and sketching process. I'm currently using Bamboo Paper, which has been a fantastic app for taking important notes. For sketching references, I've been using Tayasui Sketches and transferring that to Illustrator on my MacBook Pro.

To get to the point, is there anything I should know about the newest iPad, or any apps you could recommend that are better? I'm making quite the upgrade and I'm a little worried that the improvements will get overwhelming.

Is there a way for the lock screen wallpaper to automatically change at certain times?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 10:23 PM PST

I just got myself a new iPad (2017) and I'm quite happy with it. All I'd like to know is if there's something I can toggle in the settings to change my lock screen wallpaper at specific times. For example, I like using the "Earth" wallpaper loaded on the screen, but I also like using the "Night Earth" wallpaper where the city lights are on. What I'd like to do is have the regular one during day time hours and the night time one to show up at night. Thanks in advance for any help, friends!

Is it time to retire my Mini 2?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 04:44 PM PST

Hi, I wanted to get a bit of advice. I've had my mini 2 since 2014, and it still works pretty good. It has some lag here and there due to iOS 11 though. I use it for productivity apps/taking notes, reading, watching Netflix/Hulu/etc. I don't have a lot of moolah, so I was thinking of upgrading to either the IPad 2017, Pro 9.7 or the mini 4 even though the IPad Pro 10.5 would be my top choice.

So, should I upgrade? Or should I just keep it until the apps I use don't support it?

    GoodNotes4 pdf question

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 04:31 PM PST

I use notability on my ipad and macbook and it suits my needs for pdf annotation except sometimes when I import a file which has pages in landscape orientation, it adds some useless white spaces on each side of the page. I have to ajust the scaling on my mac everytime...

So I'm thinkimg of getting the goodnotes 4 app but I'd like to know how it handles such files so heres an example: http://web.mit.edu/rsi/www/pdfs/beamer-tutorial.pdf

Can some one with the app tell me how it looks when imported?

    Thanks

I don’t understand file transfer at all on iPad

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 09:11 PM PST

I've basically replaced my laptop with an iPad Pro 12.9 but for one thing: file management. I have a bunch of files on iCloud Drive that I want to transfer to google drive or drop box but I simply can't. It only lets me upload them one at a time. Is there something I'm missing?

    Google drive

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 08:40 PM PST

I'm trying to download a video from my google drive to my 2017 iPad. It spends a good chunk of time telling me it's preparing of export and when that dialog box goes away nothing seems to have downloaded to my camera roll. Any suggestions on what I might be missing?
