[Question] Has anyone else been getting those scammy “Congratulations Amazon User” pop-ups recently? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:18 PM PST I'd been getting them for a few days a while (maybe a month or two) ago, but then they stopped. Then today I got one from businessinsider dot com. I've googled this problem, and I'm getting different explanations. Some say it's some kind of iOS malware/adware, while other sources say it's an issue that originates on the website caused by malicious advertising. A common solution that's suggested is clearing Safari's cache and cookies in Settings. I've done this, but the pop-up returns when I go back to the site. As a workaround I've blocked the site I get redirected to, and that seems to work. As a test, though, I tried disabling Java script (with the site unblocked). When I went back to the site, I got basically a bare-bones page - no ads, no images, just text. But I didn't get redirected or a pop-up either, which would actually suggest the pop-up does originate on the site (via code in ads?). Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? I'm running iOS 11.3 dev beta (latest version) on a new (bought last week) iPad Pro 10.5". Any help greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
