Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:12 PM PST A similar update which patches the issue with the Telegu unicode crash was also released for macOS, tvOS, and watchOS iOS 11.2.6, sorry I forgot iOS in the title. Per the release notes:
edit: According to /u/chigzy, the update comes in at about 41MB on iPhone 8. screenshot [link] [comments] |
Photo app developers, your app doesn't deserve it's own album in my photos library. Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:09 PM PST The practice of every photo app creating it's own album in our camera roll needs to die. I've even seen apps create new albums every time I export a photo to my camera roll. [link] [comments] |

Why do replies to iMessages show up before the message that I sent? Posted: 19 Feb 2018 04:14 AM PST This has been happening for a while now and sometimes it's very frustrating to have to scroll up past the message I sent just to see the reply. Is this happening to anyone else? [link] [comments] |

So, stereo HomePods sound phenomenal!! Posted: 19 Feb 2018 06:54 PM PST I was able to set up stereo HomePods using AirFoil on my iMac, and holy shit, do they sound great. Currently using them in my bedroom, with a speaker in opposite corners of the room. One HomePod is on my dresser, the other is at a lower height on my nightstand. The soundstage that they produce is pretty damn amazing. Using these compared to stereo Sonos Ones in the same room is a completely different ballgame. I can be in any part of the room, and it still feels as if I'm right in the sweet spot. Doesn't feel like right or left channel is overpowering the other, no matter which speaker I'm closest to. This was an issue I had with the Sonos One setup. Unless the speakers were the exact same height, and you were right in the middle of them, one speaker overpowered the other. Really impressed with this makeshift stereo setup, and excited to see how this sounds when Apple rolls out official stereo support. I'd expect the position-aware calibration that a single speaker does will be much more impressive when you add a second speaker. For those curious, this is the tutorial I used to set up stereo. A Mac without apps isn't a Mac at all. Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:21 PM PST In light of Twitter scrapping their Mac app, I've read a few articles that detail how concerning this is. Not because of Twitter's decision specifically, but because this has been happening for awhile. The result is fewer native apps on the Mac, and instead, more browser-based apps that are capable of being run on any computer. In this post by John Gruber, he argues that:
What he is referring to is that, since Apple has become so "locked down" with their security requirements for apps (also known as "sandboxing"), developers are less inclined to continue making them. In a separate post, he goes on to say (emphasis mine):
Other than Apple's apps (which don't follow their own rules), third-party developers aren't able to make programs work like they used to. A former Apple engineer recently commented about this in a forum , which spawned Gruber's comments (again, emphasis mine):
The engineer says that he believes Apple should "drop the Mac app sandbox altogether" and instead just opt to do certificate signing. Otherwise, Mac apps just aren't worth a developers' time. What are peoples' thoughts on this? I have been concerned myself, as I find much of the work I do now being broswer-based. While I don't mind working in a browser, it doesn't give me the same level of control or high quality I would expect from a native Mac application. Additionally, working in a browser doesn't require a Mac at all. Apple has, seemingly, made the Mac so locked down and so difficult to develop for that developers are choosing alternatives to making apps for macOS. The result is less of a need for end users to use a Mac whatsoever. A decision that more and more people (that I know, anyway) are making every day. tl;dr: Apple's own former engineers believe that macOS is too locked down, resulting in more and more developers scrapping their native Mac apps, instead just making browser-based apps. Do you believe Apple needs to loosen their restrictions on developers? If not, then what is the reason for owning a Mac if all the exact same apps can be run in a browser on a $200 Chromebook? PSA: Mysteriously Large System Storage MacOS Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:51 PM PST Hi fellow Apples. After multiple tries to fix this problem, I FINALLY found a fix online for the large system file issue. The issue is that free space magically disappears, and the System portion of the storage management in About This Mac is abnormally large. When this issue happens to me, my folder grows to 200 GB and I only have the 512 SSD on my computer. It's been driving me nuts and I was unable to find a fix for a couple months, even after talking to AppleCare. The cause is that Time Machine is making snapshot files on the hard drive itself, so the more backups you do, the larger that set of files gets. I found the fix at the link here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/system-taking-alot-of-space.2015434/ Basically, we first list the snapshots saved on the computer with this terminal command: sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots / I saw quite a few when I entered this command. To clear, we do: sudo tmutil thinLocalSnapshots / 100000000000 4 After this command if we list local snapshots again we should see nothing there, and our system folder returned to normal size! Credit goes to the posters in the link I added to this post earlier. [link] [comments] |
Has anybody returned their HomePod? Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:10 PM PST I'm on the verge of returning mine. Don't get me wrong; it sounds great, as the reviews have mentioned. And yes, Siri is extremely limited. But my Apple TV + bookshelf speaker setup overlaps the HomePod abilities too much to justify the cost of it. It was cool to walk into my home and say "hey siri play some music" and immediately have a music-filled room but I'd rather boot up my Apple TV and start watching Parks and Recreation :P [link] [comments] |

Contemplating on getting the AirPods. What are some pros and cons? Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:48 PM PST Well mostly looking for cons. I've heard a lot of great stuff about the Airpods. I just got the ATH-M50x a few months ago and love them, but they're super bulky to carry around. Also any news on Airpod 2? [link] [comments] |

Adding my offline songs means I can't use Apple Music? Posted: 19 Feb 2018 09:40 PM PST I've been trying to add all my CD's from local concerts I've gone to (tracks I can't find on Apple Music), and I've found it's not possible to add my music. I had to turn off "iCloud Music Library" which deleted ALL my Apple Music tracks! I've got terrible internet and it took me SO long to download everything from Apple Music. Can I seriously not listen to local artists music that don't have a presence on Apple Music without disabling Apple Music??? Why are we forced to choose like this? It's ridiculous! If you ever feel nostalgic (like I do), you can relive an Apple release using the Wayback Machine. Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:39 AM PST You can go here and check out tens of thousands of saved webpages all the way back to 1996. It's an interesting way to see in detail how their different products evolved over the years. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:20 AM PST So I've noticed as of late that majority of APPS These days have gone to monthly subscriptions and they are just at ridiculous prices. What happened to the solid purchase I guess greed is the thing here. [link] [comments] |
Setting thumbnail of IOS photo albums Posted: 19 Feb 2018 10:54 PM PST The IOS photo albums use the first image as its thumbnail by default. Apart from rearranging photos in the photo album (which messes up the order of photos), is there any other way to set a thumbnail? [link] [comments] |
