iOS 11 Rotation needs to be fixed. This is awful.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:03 AM PST

We're about 4 months past the release of iOS 11, and every single device I own that is running the OS has bugs and glitches regarding rotation, especially iPads. Half the time you have to lock/unlock the screen to get it to realize that you rotated the device, and even then, it takes several seconds to recognize that you even did that.

And yes, I've submitted feedback multiple times.

Apple makes some of the best stress-relief toys.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 01:14 PM PST

I'm talking about the Airpods and the Apple Pencil. The magnets on them are incredibly satisfying to snap and play with. They're a bit too satisfying, that I'm afraid my impulses will end up wearing them out far earlier than they were meant to. The wheel on the Apple Watch is a lot of fun to spin, too.

Even the software on some of their devices is like a stress-relief toy. The left/right swiping between fullscreen apps, on Macbooks, with their glass trackpads. Going home on the iPhone X and the iPad (with iOS 11). 3D Touching an app over and over on an iPhone 6S or higher.

I can see it now. In 2018, they'll release the best stress-relief toy in existence.

PSA: On MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and fingerprint, you can easily switch between user by resting your finger on the fingerprint sensor and then clicking it.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 10:03 PM PST

I just discovered it today when I accidentally resting my finger on the fingerprint and there's a prompt on the touch bar to click the fingerprint to switch user.

If you think your charging cable or phone needs to get replaced, go to your Apple store and have them clean out your charging port first. It takes 2 minutes, it’s free, and it can save you a money

Why do we not have color-coordinated flags for Mail on iOS like we do on macOS, that would be a great implementation and continuity for the Apple ecosystem

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 09:15 PM PST

I flag emails different colors for specific reasons, but they just show up as orange on the phone so all I have are orange flagged emails that mean nothing anymore on my phone. Would be a great enhancement to the mail app.

    iPad Mini’s Future?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 10:13 PM PST

Is there any speculation about the next generation, if there even is one, of the iPad Mini line? I've always loved the iPad Mini for it's convenient size and portability. It would be a shame for them to discontinue it! I'd love to see an iPad Mini Pro line, but the future looks a bit grim.

Planning to make the switch to Mac. Anything I should be aware of?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 11:30 PM PST

I've finally saved up enough to be able to purchase a 2017 tbMBP 15 inch. I've used the machine at the stores quite a lot and I'm absolutely in love with it.

The last laptop I purchased is over 6 years old. Will this MacBook be future proof? Also, while I don't mind the keyboard, I've been hearing a lot of issues people have with it such as dust issues and unresponsive keys. What are the chances I'm going to struggle with the same?

Anything else to note for a windows user making the switch? Appreciate any feedback :)

TIFU by letting an iMac Pro stand mechanism retract while installing a VESA mount kit; solved without dissassembly

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 03:36 PM PST

Maybe it was clear to anyone else who has done the install, but I must not have locked the 'mechanism' in the correct place prior to removing the OEM stand. Apple says you pretty much have to take it apart to fix this problem, but I wasn't feeling particularly patient to use my new machine.

After a few minutes of trying to see if pliers could get it (not even close), or a curved pick through one of the bolt holes (no way), I found that I was able to pull the mechanism pretty well by bending a paper clip into a U-shape, holding both ends with some pliers, and grabbing one of the two pins that stick out of the top of the mechanism with the loop of wire.

Once the mechanism is pulled about even without the slot in the outer case, it won't go any further until the lever is released as described in the manual for removing the stand. The credit-card-style tool provided in the kit worked for this, and it's probably helpful to have a second person do that part. With that lever released the mechanism can be pulled all the way out into a locked position and you can continue with the install.

TLDR: The mount kit is technically customer-installable, but it's not made clear what can go wrong.

Why can we not add FTP servers in the files app?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 09:05 AM PST

Basically title. I feel like this is such a miss opportunity to make the files app even more awesome. It would save me the time (or other app) which I need to either open it in safari or use a different app.

Edit: are there any apps which I can use to integrate a FTP connection into the files app?

Is a ‘pay what you want’ iOS app possible?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 02:23 PM PST

I hope this is the right sub for this question

I'm on the precipice of releasing an iOS game I've worked hard on for the past few months. I don't want to mar my app with ads, micro-transactions, or make it P2P, but at the same time I do like money...

I want to do a donation-based payment method kind of like what Wikipedia does. Is such a model possible? If so, what are some examples of apps that have done this?

Virtual Machine v Bootcamp performance 2017 MBP 13in?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:21 AM PST

I'm trying to decide if I want to take up a lot of space on my hard drive and have to reboot constantly to swap between Bootcamp and macOS. So what's the performance difference between Bootcamp and a Virtual Machine? What's the best for both 'Nix and Microsoft OS instances? Guide me, strangers on the internet.

Alternative for OpenVPN Connect on iOS?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 06:14 PM PST

So it seems OpenVPN completely broke OpenVPN Connect with their previous update and the latest one doesn't seem to resolve any of the issues we were facing.

The app now disconnects when moved into the background, stalls on almost any serious volume of traffic and is generally unusable.

From what I can see there's not an alternative, general OpenVPN client on the App Store. Am I correct on that?

I need something that can user .ovpn profiles for our own OpenVPN servers and which I can perform some sort of checks on regarding security. All I'm finding are dubious "free VPN" applications.

Longevity in 2018 and beyond: 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch vs 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:16 PM PST

Sorry to post another one these this vs. that threads but I'm still torn on deciding between the 2015 and 2017 15 inch MacBook Pro.

I'll be using this Mac as my main computer and for my photography hobby and for editing 4K videos from my GoPro.

In comparing and reading about the two laptops, I'm confident the 2015 model has plenty enough power but my main question is longevity. With the 2015 already being several years old with 4th gen processors, is it foolish to buy in 2018?

Price wise, I can get the 2015 brand new for $500 less than the 2017, Thoughts?
