How do you restore an admin account after deleting it

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:30 PM PST

My brother deleted the only admin account on his Macbook (with MacOS High Sierra). What does he need to do to restore it?

Edit: so he actually didn't delete his account. It was demoted from admin to standard, and he has lost all admin privileges.

Unable to find thunderbolt 2 dock that will support 3 monitors for my MBPr pre 2014.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:00 PM PST

Hi, I hope this is the right community to ask this.

I've been furiously searching for a thunderbolt 2 dock that will support three monitors. Preferably two thunderbolt 2 ports and 1 HDMI port. I will keep the lid on my MBP closed.

I keep getting results for thunderbolt 3 instead of thunderbolt 2 docks with triple display.

I will be forever grateful if you can help me. All the thunderbolt 2 docks I come across say they support dual display even though most of them have two thunderbolt 2 ports and one HDMI port.

    Thank you!

    Edit: Removed false statement.

Mac Repair Without Being Apple Certified

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:11 PM PST

I have been doing maintenance on my own computers (Macintosh and otherwise) myself for the last 10 years, so I'm more than confident opening up a computer and taking components apart. I am tossing the idea around of making myself a website to start doing repairs for money, just in my local city. Is there any reason I legally can't offer to work on a Mac without being an Apple Certified Technician? I would never say that I was certified without holding the cert, I just don't want to get sued by Apple or a customer if the hard drive stops working after a repair or something. I am assuming by working on it as a non certified technician that I would void the warranty by working on it as well, is that correct?

    Disk Utility First Aid failed

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:56 PM PST

I'm trying to erase my Time Machine partition to start anew, as it cannot currently be used for backups for some reason. I can still see the files, but it appears to be read only.

When trying First Aid in Disk Utility, it comes up with the following:

Repairing file system. Volume was successfully unmounted. Performing fsck_hfs -fy -x /dev/rdisk2s2 Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Checking extents overflow file. Checking catalog file. Incorrect block count for file permStore (It should be 17 instead of 0) Keys out of order Missing thread record (id = 10755774) Rebuilding catalog B-tree. The volume Time Machine could not be repaired. File system check exit code is 8. Restoring the original state found as mounted. Problem -69842 occurred while restoring the original mount state. File system verify or repair failed. Operation failed…

This Time Machine is part of two partitions on a single drive. The other partition contains files I need to keep, so formatting the complete drive is not an option.

Is there anything I can do? Thanks!

Is it possible to remove music from an audio clip in iMovie while keeping the voice?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:50 PM PST

If anyone needs to know what the clip is, it's from the episode "The Storm" from Avatar: The Last Airbender, whenever the monks tell him he's the Avatar. There's just some bells or chimes playing, but it plays over the music.

    Migration Assistant startup disk?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:22 PM PST

Can someone please confirm that when replacing a MacBook Pro's HDD with an SSD, after installing macOS on the SSD you can simply plug in the old HDD with a USB 3 to SATA cable and migrate the data as hinted, but not elaborated upon in this Apple support document. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 I called Apple to ask this question and the person I spoke to did not know what SATA was... 😂

    Macbook GPU replacement 6770 / 6750

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:16 PM PST

    Howdy,

I'm needing to get my mac working again (For the 5 or 6th time) and I've contacted an apple certified repair technician that has offered to replace my current 6770 with a cooler running 6750.

Does anyone know what would be best? I ended up only doing lighter photoshop/illustrator and lightroom work as well as web browsing and the odd game or two of leauge/KSP. Nothing too intensive. Would I benefit much more having the 6750 than the 6770?

    Many thanks

Trash has a "test" folder in it after every restart

Every time I restart my Mac a folder called "test" appears. Every time I empty the trash it comes back. What's going on? I'm on the latest macOS 10.13.3 but this has been going on for well over a year.

Buying an iPhone 8, is 265GB really worth it?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:54 PM PST

So I am getting my wife an iPhone 8 (she has a 6) and myself an 8 Plus.

I was just wondering if the 256GB is worth is very 64GB and adding Family iCloud Storage?

We have great plans so we don't want to give those up . The difference between the two storage models is about $400 CDN. Plus, with the phones being glass and us having 2 little boys, I feel Apple Care is a must so that's another $350 CDN.

If it's worth it, I will certain spend the money. However, if I can cut costs somewhere because it's not worth it, I will. Right now I'm looking at about $3500 CDN all in.

    Thanks :)

    VM over wifi from mbp

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:09 PM PST

Hi, I was just wondering if it's possible to use some kind of OSX vm running on a more powerful home machine on a MacBook pro/air. I've got my old 17" fully specced MBP that died on me, and I don't really know if I want to buy another apple device after my iPhone and iPad both randomly died on me too. I was needing to do heavy lightroom and photoshop work, but as much as I loved my 17" MBP it wasn't the most portable macbook. So I'm wondering if I could stream my operations from my windows computer. I'd love to hear what you've got to say. And my bad if this doesn't make too much sense, I've had a few!

    Many thanks!

Why does Spotify pauses every time I get a snapchat notification?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 11:28 AM PST

Hi, I've been noticing this problem for a couple of weeks now, every time I get a snapchat while listening to Spotify, even if its just a notification on the home page, my Spotify pauses itself. Even if I just open the snapchat app while listening to Spotify, it stops playing. I am using an iPhone 6S iOS 11.2.2

As an avid user of both Spotify and Snapchat, this is getting really annoying? Anyone else having this problem?

Mac Pro Keyboard and Trackpad Stop Working

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 06:08 PM PST

I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), with system OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 (I had just wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the system, issue persists now and through to High Sierra).

For a while now, and I think maybe it was after a major system update, my trackpad stopped working. Initially the issue could be resolved by simply restarting Mac. But then came a point where restarting doesn't work, and I resorted to SMC and PRAM resets. They also worked for a while, and then at one point they stopped working too. I asked Apple support and they recommended restarting in safe mode to see if it's application interference. I did that but trackpad was still dead. However later I found that the trackpad will start to work if the Mac was shutdown for a long enough period, like 8 hours over sleep, however the duration for which the trackpad works decreases each time, by now it only works for about 20 seconds upon a 8 hour break (I turned it off for 2 weeks when I went on a holiday, but the trackpad still only lasted 20 seconds).

Later, the keyboard also stopped working, but I found that this only happens if I close down the screen, going to sleep while the screen is up is fine. So I stopped closing down the screen and just turn off the display every night. The keyboard not responding issue could be resolved by restarting, but I'm concerned it may fall to the same pattern as the trackpad eventually.

A few things to note that is I rarely shutdown my Mac, I just put it to sleep whenever possible. And I usually use it for gaming, which is very CPU intensive. I'm not sure if these habits are what caused the harm.

Also Apple Support said the battery cycle looked fine.

If you have any idea about the issue, please help out.

    Thank you all in advance!

How long does Apple take to replace your battery at the store?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:45 PM PST

Hello r/AppleHelp , my pops has been having battery issues with his IPhone 6 Plus and made a Genius Bar appointment to get it replaced. He is worried that they will hold his IPhone for a few days and he will be without a phone. So my question is how long do they take to change the battery, couple hours, minutes or days? Thank you!

lost AppleID. Trying to recover it, but it tells me the process will be ready in 12 days?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:52 PM PST

    Hello!

Yesterday I tried to recover my AppleID password (since I'm trying to claim my digital copies of Game of Thrones). So I got through the process (enter my phone number + my phone passcode) and it tells me that the informations will be ready in 24 hours and that they will send the info on my phone.

30 hours later, no news. So I try the process again and it tells me it will be ready in 12 days?

    Any input on that?

    Should I replace my battery?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:52 PM PST

I have an iPhone 6s Plus running iOS 10.2 and my phone is randomly shutting down which makes me think my SOC is asking for more power than my battery can deliver and I checked the total capacity and it said that it was operating at 71.3 percent of its total capacity. Should I get my battery replaced while it's 30 dollars or is it something else?

Question about upgrading HDD to SSD

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:35 PM PST

    Equipment:

    2012 13" MacBook Pro i5

    HDD - 500gb

    SSD - 240gb HP M700

    Issue:

The HDD crashed last weekend, so I decided to take it as a blessing in disguise and swap it out for an SSD. I, apparently foolishly, just took out the old one and put in the new one. I booted to disk utility and the SSD doesn't show up. So I looked it up and all the tutorials say to clone the SSD via an external adapter since my SSD is likely not partitioned for Mac. Problem with that is that I don't have an and adapter or an internal HDD to clone since mine crashed. I do have an external backup that I made a few months ago, but I can't figure out a way to clone an external drive to my SSD that's inside the MacBook. Is this possible? Can anyone tell me my options for partitioning the SSD?

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated

Can’t update 2012 MacBook Pro because I am stuck on Yosemite. Is this fixable?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:22 PM PST

So I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro that went neglected for a couple years because of a work laptop I had.

I am trying to get it up to El Capitan (10.11) and I am stuck at Yosemite 10.10.5. Whenever I try to download El Capitan it says I need at least 10.10.6.

Question is, am I screwed? The only updates I can find on the App Store are for El Capitan and Sierra but I am not updated enough to download either (I've tried).

Is there any work around for this?

How do I figure out what iTunes has been downloading?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:15 PM PST

I opened iTunes to delete some albums that I no longer wanted in my library, and I thought I had closed it but the next day I opened my computer and a few minutes later iTunes gives me a popup saying that my computer is out of space because it has been busy downloading... something. I didn't tell it to download anything. How do I find out what did it download and why?

Practical advice needed for Early 2011 MBP

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 11:24 AM PST

Hi all, I have an early-2011 Macbook Pro 8,2 15 inch with 2.2 ghz core i7 and 4 gb ram. I've had the logic board replaced about 2 years ago, and my battery is 900+ cycles. After recent updates to the computer and just time passing by, I have noticed that the computer runs much slower than in the past. Researching here and other places, I understand it is a viable option to upgrade the RAM and HD to SSD. I suspect I'll also need to buy a new battery within the next 6 months.

My question is: Are the upgrades worth doing (looks to be $400-500), in comparison to just buying a new MBP? I'm comfortable doing the upgrades, but don't want to do them if its not really worth the money involved. I can't really tell if the new macbook processors/gpus/batteries are THAT much better than what I have, or if the major difference is in RAM capacity and SSD tech. I'm also a little put off by the small hard drives in the current lesser models for the cost (i assume ill need to upgrade on my own).

    Thanks for your help!
