After deleting a Bootcamp partition, storage space has gone missing

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:45 PM PST

I deleted about a 200 GB partition on a 1T hard drive. However, my Macintosh HD claims it only still has 800gbs. How do I get that space back?

Macbook Pro running super slow and glitchy

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 03:51 PM PST

    i have a 15in late 2011 macbook pro running mac os sierra(10.12.5) 8gb ram 2.4 i7

I have not done any updates nor have i installed any software/hardware. last night it was working just fine. this morning i notice my battery life is at 0% which is odd because it was charging all night. I also recently(About two weeks ago) bought a brand new battery, replaced the charger port, and bought a whole new charging cord.

i then tried to launch an application(fl studio beta). it took forever to load. then in about five minutes, which is an absurd amount of time for it to take to load and is definitely not how it has ever behaved. tried to close it ended up having to force it closed.

I opened up google to see how it acted. It took a bit to load but not as long as fl. I tried to type in the search bar, I finished my sentence before its third letter was written out.

I tried to shut it down and then reset smc and pram but that did no good. i ran a scan and repair using disc utility, that didnt help. I was looking into deleting all its cache files but some threads said that may even cause it to run even shittier. what else do you think i could do to fix this issue?

Slow Folder actions with 14,000 files

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 09:13 PM PST

Is there any advice as to deal with slow OSX Finder actions on folders containing large image sequences? Copy, move, trash, delete or even folder refresh is very slow.

We have a 10min Alexa65 sequence of ~14,400 .ari files

Everything is snappy on a direct-connected RAID (Thunderbolt 2, RAID 5), and a large contiguous file copies over the network quickly without issues.

The network share is connected over 10Gbit Ethernet, and I've tested over AFP and SMB shares.

Anyway to airplay video (not mirror) from safari on Macs

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 05:24 PM PST

On iPhones you always have an airplay button when media is playing. But on the Mac the there is no option unless the video player on the website enables it (eg. youtube) other than airplay mirroring. Am I missing something?

I had gotten this laptop from a cousin and they don't remember the apple ID or password on it so I tried to restore it and well... It can't connect to the internet so it it gives me a =2006f error, so i tried downloading El Capitan 10.11 and migrated it with transmac, but when i try to boot up the computer it gives me a prohibitory sign halfway through the loading screen. Anybody know what to do? EDIT: I also cannot get into disk utility to restore or anything like that, so :/

Sliced into iPhone battery with a razor blade... Will it still work?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 12:11 PM PST

So I was swapping out my screen the other day and (long story short) I accidentally sliced a millimeter-sized gash into the battery. There was a very brief spark and it burned the razor blade a bit.

I'm afraid to turn it on now. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on whether it will still work?

Device registered on account, skipped two device authorization

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 02:24 PM PST

    1

I recently returned a MacBook Air to the seller, as it was actually stolen property and afterwards it was returned to the seller, then given back to the owner. (A school district.) Earlier today, I got the message that a new device was able to use my mac for FaceTime and iMessage. I have since changed my passport as "Rew's MacBook" is not mine. The device was a MacBook air. I have two factor authorization enabled but this did not go through when they registered their device on my account. My password was rather complex, and therefore unless deliberate tampering/hacking was involved would NOT be accidentally guessed. So I'm wondering if the account was still tied to the MacBook when I reset it. Is this possible?

I have reset the apple password and removed the device. My concern is that they've been able to access things such as my photos, my music, my messages, my e-mails, etc.

How legitimate is this concern if they didn't know my apple password? I'm a bit worried. Thanks for any help.

Can I airplay music from my iPhone to my Mac?

I realize it's a crazy question, but I have music on my iPhone that I would like to listen to at work on my Mac. I cannot put my music on my Mac.

So is there anyway I can airplay from my iPhone to my Mac like I do to my Apple TV?

Issues with 10.13.2 on older MBP

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 07:59 PM PST

I'm using a mid-2010 MBP 15" (still officially supported according to Apple's website)

Had Sierra 10.12.6 running just fine.
Couldn't upgrade to High Sierra 10.13.0 as I am using RAID 0 (Stripe) of two SSDs (replaced the superdrive and original hard drive with two 2.5" SSDs, made a RAID to elevate SATA2's slowness).
I then used an external hard drive (2.5", mechanical) to install High Sierra on it, and later Carbon Copy Cloner to clone that installation over to my RAID, at which point 10.13.0 was working fine, updated fine to 10.13.1, but when 10.13.2 came out .. it would fail to update (tried via terminal, app store, download the files from apple's website, the plain\combo\supplemental, have the files on an external drive, extract their content to lib\updates\9... folder, reset Mac's memory, single user mode, use another user and finally, redo the whole thing this time first formatting my RAID as APFS (first attempt was on HFS+)). (the way it would fail is that the first phase installation within working OS would work fine, during reboot it would start with "2min left", and after 10-15sec restart and greet me with "some updates could not be installed", and after any attempt to install 10.13.2, the app store update section offers one update: "upgrade from 10.13.2 to 10.13.2" <-- .2 to .2 while using .1 O_o)

Seeing as nothing would work, I restored a carbon copy clone of a 2016 MBP into my 2010 MBP, now my mid 2010 MBP finally have 10.13.2 BUT it is unusable: it is super slow; takes 10 min to get to user login, another 30min(!) for the beach ball to vanish and buttons to become live, tried to access "about this mac", first time I load it after boot it is missing the inc, year portion (saying just "macbook pro"), cmd+q-> reopen and its fine, same with app store, first time loading it, it has no buttons on top (no fav/top/cat.../updates), cmd+q->reopen - works fine, everything takes few attempts to lunch, tried opening reminders via lunch bar, first click .. it bounces a few times and then just stops, doesn't open, second time it opens, takes ... 5+ min to open (also 5+ min for about this mac\app store)
activity monitor shows 7.2gb ram used out of 8gb ram, however no paticular app is using more than 500mb ram except for "kernel task" at 750mb (it also has 135 threads and uses 7% of cpu). using "applications" on the dock only works for non-folders, trying to click on a folder closes it instead of showing the applications that are in the folder
in general, the machine doesn't work well enough to be useful in this state.

did a fresh install of high sierra 10.12.6, everything works blazing fast and smooth.

just for fun, tried to boot the 2016 15" MBP via external drive with the carbon copy of the mid 2010 MBP using 10.13.1 and:
    1. it booted and worked fine
    2. it still refused to update to 10.13.2

    Questions:
    1. Is there anyone here with mid-2010 15" MBP that have 10.13.2 working just fine?
    2. is it a known 'thing' that using OS that was installed on much newer mac causes unexpected behavior? while using OS that was installed on much older Mac (assuming same OS is supported on both macs) works fine?

Unsure how to use old iphone 6s plus as a wifi-only device?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 07:56 PM PST

Bought a new unlocked and sim-less iphone X from Best Buy. Have yet to open it.

What I'm using now is my 6s plus, want to turn it into a wifi-only ipod touch.

I need to be able to access my apple music sub, the camera, safari, and ideally email and imessage (messages stricly between other iphones). What is the best route to do this? I have read conflicting things online.

Apple TV 3rd Generation, HULU, all shows, "Subtitles not available for this content" what has happened to blank out all subtitle options that were working just the other day?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 01:37 PM PST

I turned on my apple tv just a few minutes ago, and subtitles for hulu were disabled no matter what show I picked, it only had the option "Off" forced by default, and even force enabling subtitles as default setting from accessibility in the apple menu did not fix anything, is there some kinda BS going on with the servers at HULU communicating with my Apple or what? cause the closed captions worked for the titles when I went to hulu's site in my chrome browser

I haven't updated my MacBook Pro's OS in years. Please help.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 07:33 PM PST

Hi all. I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.5), and now I can no longer update my browsers. Safari has completely failed me, Chrome is on its way out. When I try to update I'm told I can't because my OS is no longer supported. I've been avoiding updating because I had a small hardware error (or so I was told by a Genius) that was somewhat fixed but not fully resolved and has caused minor but noticeable issues. I've backed up on an external drive and am ready to upgrade if I can. Do I just go right for High Sierra? Is that how this works? Thanks

Need suggestions - Buy new Macbook Pro or upgrade old mid-2010?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

Current laptop is a mid-2010 Macbook Pro - haven't yet made the jump to a shiny new (very expensive) Pro.

However, I've been doing a bit of research RE simply upgrading my current 2010 macbook pro - there's nothing wrong with it besides it being a bit slow/crashing with larger applications. Specifically, I experience issues when running Final Cut Pro & Capture One 10 (photo editor), as well as doing backups with time machine (very slow).

I'm no expert, but here's my current specs:

    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

500 GB SATA Disk (70.00 GB available)

What I want to know is - would it be worth it to upgrade certain aspects of my current mac (and hopefully save a boatload of cash), or should I keep saving up and just bite the bullet?

If it'd be worth it to upgrade my current mac, what should I look into doing? I know 4 gigs is pretty low - any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

New MacBook nothing but trouble with Adobe items

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:59 AM PST

    Hey all,

This macbook pro has been a nightmare since I got it; it was refusing to install High Sierra, giving a "location doesn't exist" error, I managed to fix this, but somehow Creative Cloud bugged out and wouldn't work anymore, so I uninstalled it, deleted all instances of it, but now it won't install anything adobe. It just locks at 0% and doesn't let me close it. The Creative Cloud tool stops at "Initializing 2%" and nothing.

I downloaded the Cloud Clean tool, it doesn't find anything to remove, I tried downloading Photoshop on it's own, nothing. Hoping you guys can help, as the nearest Apple store is literally 2 hours away :(

    Thanks all

Terminal freezing and screwing up other system things on High Sierra.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 12:44 PM PST

Every once in a while my terminal will freeze, giving me the spinning beach ball of doom and an "application not responding" message. After force quitting I'm not able to open terminal again until I reboot, trying to results in the application launching, but no window appears and it freezes again immediately. The only thing in the logs that comes up is " AEGetDescData of non-desc type 'reco' not a good idea", tagged as an error (not a fault). Further, once this bug has occurred I am unable to shutdown or reboot gracefully, the shutdown starts but hangs on a black screen, requiring a forceful power down.

There are also certain commands that seem to reliably trigger this, for example anything with homebrew.

Any idea how to fix this? It's incredibly annoying.

OSX High Sierra - Video is a black box and won't play.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 02:51 PM PST

If I go directly to youtube, I have no issue!

If I go to a site like theweathernetwork.com and try to view a video, it shows up as a black box with a play button, but I am unable to play the vid. No error message - nothing.

This is the same in Safari, Chrome and Firefox.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Changed Apple ID now Ipad is stuck on Activation Lock

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 06:31 PM PST

So a few months ago my wife had issues with her apple ID being hacked. She contacted apple and they had her set up a new apple ID. We haven't used her ipad since then and it was attached to the old apple id. I reset the ipad and now i'm stuck on the Activation Lock. The old apple ID no longer exists so there is no password for it. Not sure what to do as it is now completely useless. Anybody have any suggestions as to how to unlock it?

All applications are "damaged or incomplete", question mark on all apps, no icons, serious issues out of the blue shortly after updating to 10.13.2

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 06:14 PM PST

    Hello all.

Over the past couple days I have experience truly the most bizarre issue with an Apple product I have ever experienced. It has a somewhat long story to it, so I have all relevant details in chronological order.

First off, here's my specs: Macbook Pro Mid-2012 i5 w/ 250GB SSD, 1TB HDD in optical bay, 8GB RAM. Running high sierra 10.13.2

Alright. So, my computer installed some updates overnight last weekend. Worked fine the next day, except that Spotlight stopped indexing my applications folder. Rather annoying, but not completely bizzare. I tried fixing it by adding the applications folder to the Spotlight blacklist, then remove it. That did nothing.

Monday night, I tried the following three commands to try to force it to reindex my entire drive: sudo mdutil -i on / sudo mdutil -i off / sudo mdutil -E /

That did nothing immediately - again, unsurprisingly. But the next day, it still hadn't indexed the drive. The progress bar in Spotlight was stuck at the beginning.

Last night (Tuesday) was when the really bizzare stuff started happening. I tried to launch Fusion 360 (CAD software) from the dock, to be greeted with a "Fusion 360 cannot be opened because it is damaged or incomplete." I did the reasonable thing, and did a system reboot. I tried opening other software from the dock, but was greeted with the same message for all items in the dock. I then tried opening items from the launchpad, only to be greeted with no apps having icons whatsoever. Same thing with apps directly from my Applications folder - attempting to open any app, including system utilities like Terminal and Disk utility - resulted in the same damaged or incomplete error. Additionally, all the apps had their icons missing in the Applications folder. Right-clicking > show package content > browsing to the actual executable also does not work - it asks what software you would like to open the file with. I would have launched them from the terminal, but... well... I can't open it!

At this point, I got seriously freaked out about a corrupted drive, malware, etc, so I shut it down for the night. Today, I pulled the drive and took a full image of it for backup purposes. After some SMART analysis and the massive copy without any errors (used ddrescue on a linux box to clone the drive to an iso), I can say definitively that the SSD is not dying. After backing up the drive, I booted off a recovery USB drive and ran first aid on the main partition on the SSD, which found no errors.

I also tried other user accounts. First I tried another admin account, and google chrome launched on login fine, but no other software would open. After quitting google chrome, it refused to open again - same damaged or incomplete error. I then tried the guest account, where all the app icons on the dock are replaced with question marks. Again, nothing would open. However, I could open "About This Mac", and get a system report, etc. Clicking on software update results in a cryptic error about not being able to find the app to open that link with.

At this point, I plan on doing a full OS reinstall and copying stuff back from my disk image. But if anyone has any idea why this happened in the first place, or what I could do to repair it short of doing a full reinstall, let me know. If you want screenshots of any of this weirdness (taken with a phone camera, because Preview can't open...) then let me know. Thanks!

Would a trade up for iPhone SE to SE 2 be worth it? Or just replace battery?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 06:14 PM PST

I am on the fence about this and it would be more for space than specs. I bought my SE with 16GB then a few months later, the capacity started at 32GB - was too late to return the low capacity and get the higher one.

Nothing is wrong with the phone but was thinking sometime in the future to upgrade to the highest capacity so I do not need to carry around a phone and an iPod classic. My apple care is expiring at an estimated date of July 21, 2018.

    Edit: spelling

Or would it be best to just replace battery to prepare for longer use. Though in this case depending on how long the phone lasts, the amount I would get back would get lower.

When I try to reset my iPhone that my sister borrowed, it says "Enter your Apple ID password to erase this iPhone and remove it from your account." It is signed into her Apple ID.

    I type in the password and the phone won't do anything. It doesn't even give me the option to cancel or erase. What can I do? Can Verizon reset this? ;

What can be done to stop this from happening? It's been a common occurrence ever since I switched from Android to iOS.
