iOS 15.3 and macOS 12.2 finally fix Sidecar!

Ever since Monterey came out (and possibly during Big Sur as well) iPad Sidecar stoped working wirelessly. When using Sidecar was running wirelessly it would freeze after a few seconds, and would only only work when connected in wired mode. Now with 15.3 and 12.2 RC, Sidecar has finally been fixed!

My first free iOS game reached 100k users! I’ve added new content and would love to have you check it out!

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 01:18 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

A few months ago I released my first iOS game called SkillZone. It's a series of (now) 14 mini games that you have to play in one go to try to get onto the leaderboards. It somehow started spreading pretty quickly through word of mouth and App Store recommendations and just reached 100k users!

I've added 2 new games to the app since then and would love to have you give it another try.

As my first game, this has really motivated me to continue my iOS development side hobby. Super thankful to the Redditors who've given their feedback throughout, I'm always open to hearing more!

Word Game Hero - word puzzle guessing game for iOS with features including SharePlay! Mentioned this week in Daring Fireball. Giving away promo codes for one time Unlimited IAP to unlock all features.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 12:10 AM PST

    Hey folks!

I'm an indie developer who just released a word puzzle game playable over FaceTime with SharePlay!

Word Game Hero is available now for iOS with MacOS in the works.

John Gruber mentioned it during the week on Daring Fireball, saying Word Game Hero "is to Wordle as Words With Friends is to Scrabble".

Like lots of people I got hooked on Josh Wardles daily online challenges with Wordle, and these were my first introduction to the Lingo format from the game show. I saw Katherine Peterson's continuous version on GitHub and that only fuelled the fire.

I've spent hours since then building what I want out of a word puzzle game!

    Features

    • Unlimited puzzles from a dictionary (10 a day if unlimited not purchased)
    • Native UI that looks and feels right at home on iOS (built with SwiftUI)
    • Share specific puzzles with friends
    • SharePlay to be able to play with friends or family anywhere in the world over FaceTime!
    • Clues so that there is another element to gameplay and building a streak
    • Additional letter modes between 4 and 7 letters
    • Customise UI, app icon and even gameplay
    • Stats on your win rate and number of guesses needed
    • Streaks and targets
    • Dictionary definitions for puzzle words

    Coming soon

    • Time limits so you can control how much you play
    • More ways to challenge your friends! Game Center? Wait and see. Yes.

    Ads

    • I am using Not Evil Ads in the game, which is my own privacy friendly ad platform that I'm working on. The ads are privacy friendly in that they are not correlated or cross referenced with your activity anywhere else at all. They work like say a podcast ad does where a business will pay for placement, and then use a referral code i.e example.org/wordgamehero for a discount.
    • At this stage of development the ads are basically a list of apps I am choosing to promote, my own and some other developer friends, and only displayed in my apps currently. As well as using the native Apple UI for promoting an application these only show up once every 12 hours rather than being a permanent banner or similar. Again, pretty much all these decisions come down to me as a developer building an experience that me as a user would have no complaints about.
    • The eventual goal is for a very similar UI/UX as currently but with paid promotions, say Grammarly might be a good fit for sponsorship in this app for example.

    Pricing and thoughts

    • One time $2.99 USD IAP (works with Family Sharing) to unlock all features:
      • Remove ads
      • Unlimited games daily instead of 10
      • If one person on a FaceTime call has unlimited then all players can continue playing unlimited games over SharePlay
    • 5 day free trial automatically on downloading
      • Personally I get really frustrated when I can't try a game or app before needing to pay! There is no IAP screen immediately but it is always visible prominently in Settings in case you are convinced and want to purchase before the 5 days is up.
    • No way to purchase clues
      • A few people have suggested this since I launched, but currently I think that mechanics like this incentivise bad game design in some ways. I've never truly loved a game with a mechanic like this, and I want to build a game I want to play!
    • Future tips/subscription
      • I may add a tip jar in future, and may increase the price of the IAP depending on feedback and response.
      • I can't justify a subscription currently in any way as there is nothing happening off the device or with ongoing costs, so I have no plans to go down that route unless features are added that have external costs. A similar pricing ethos that I want to emulate for example would be Apollo.

    Easter eggs

As well as unlimited puzzles the once off in app purchase ($2.99USD) unlocks a screen to enter secret codes and find app icons. As a little easter egg for you if you're seeing it here I've made a Reddit specific icon that can be unlocked within the app! I think using Apollo has given me a slightly absurd level of polish and fun to aspire to, but it's fun to try.

PM me if you can't take the suspense and want a hint!

    Promo code give away

I'll pick 10 comments at random to give a promo code to in 36 hours time, roughly ~8PM GMT 24/01/2022! A version of this post was removed last week so those who commented on that post will also be in the draw.

    App Store

Word Game Hero - free, single $2.99 USD in-app purchase for Unlimited

Let me know what you think of the game, the ads or anything. I'll be around all day so happy to answer any questions at all about the roadmap, development or whatever!

Reprice: a new beautiful Amazon Price Tracker for iOS

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 02:09 AM PST

On the desktop there are multiple browser extensions that provide this service but in the mobile world there was no app that satisfied me on both UI and features. So, I tried to create an alternative with the app Reprice.

After selecting an Amazon product using the integrated Amazon Browser, you can choose to be notified on every price change or when it drops under a set value. It considers shipping price and allows you to get notified if the seller is Amazon, Amazon Warehouse, Third parties or all sellers.

I care about UI and I think Reprice is nice from this point of view but any feedback is appreciated. It's free and you can track up to 4 products at the same time without paying anything (in-app purchase if you need more).

    Here's the Apple Store Link

Do you think it's a valid alternative to Keepa or CamelCamelCamel on mobile? Which features would you like to see improved?
