| My wife's M1 Mac Mini is 17 times faster than my hackintosh Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:17 PM PST I have a 2017 Intel Hackintosh that I use as my daily driver and I find that it works pretty well for most of the tasks that I do. It has a 4.2 Ghz i3 7350K Intel chip and an AMD RX560 GPU, and most daily tasks like browsing or watching youtube are more than good enough on that machine. However, last week I needed to render a 3.5 minute video using Topaz Video Enhance, and the estimated render time was 26 hours on my machine. My wife has a new M1 Mac Mini (the lowest model with 8GB RAM) that she got a few months ago so I asked her if I could install the app on her machine and render the video clip there, and she said ok, so I installed the app and got to work and rendered the video. How long did the render take on the M1 Mac Mini? 1 hour, 25 minutes. Not bad compared to 26 hours. The M1 Mac Mini was roughly 17 times faster in completing that task. I knew that the M1 Macs were pretty good and would put my current hackintosh to shame, but damn, I didn't expect them to be that good. I'll definitely be buying a Mac Mini Pro if they release one this year. [link] [comments] | ||

| TIL: I can use Apple Keynote to create whiteboard animation videos for free Posted: 26 Jan 2022 04:42 PM PST Keynote continues to amaze me with every update and feature release. In the past, I have used it for UI design, print design, and for creating images and video overlays for social media. Last week, I wanted to create an animated whiteboard explainer for my startup, and after trying several tools, I thought: why not try Apple's Swiss Army Knife (a.k.a. Keynote). To my delight, I was able to create the video from beginning to end entirely in Keynote in less than a day using basic shapes, builds, soundtracks and even recording voice-over using live slideshow mode. It turns out that if you add a stroke to any shape in Keynote, it makes it possible to add a "Line Draw" animation to that shape, which makes it look like it's been drawn by hand in real time (especially if you add a pencil/chalk/ink stroke to it). Anyway, I was so impressed with the result that I decided to create a step-by-step tutorial for anyone who wants to use it for the same purpose (the process is the same on Mac and iPad) Enjoy, and let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions or questions. If you have a "flex gate" 13 inch 2016 MacBook pro and have been denied warrenty repairs based on the age of your machine follow this link https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service APPLE IS REQUIRED TO REPAIR UNTIL MAY 21st 2022 I have a 13 inch 2016 MacBook Pro that was effected by to the "flex gate" screen backlight problems. I read about this issue online and brought my Mac into a nearby authorized Mac repair facility. The repair shop called me and said Apple declined to repair theMacBook since it was was purchased more than five years ago and no longer under warranty. Apple has probably saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by denying warranty claims just like mine. After being told the repair would not be made most people would probably pick up their machine or pay out-of-pocket to have it replaced. After speaking with the repair shop I decided to do some more research and try to get Apple to repair my defective product. After some research I had found a service program for this specific issue. Apple's 13 inch MacBook Pro display back light service program offers to repair any machines with the defect that are less than five years after purchase or three years after the start of the program.https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service This is where the fighting begins. Apple support tells me my product won't be repaired and I continue to argue with my newfound information about this program. I explain my situation to the agent and their service programs policy. Once again I am told my MacBook is over five years old so it will not be repaired. In the program it states five years after purchase or three years after the start of service program. I had already looked online and found a start date of May 21, 2019 for the display back light service program. I tried explaining this to the agent finally the agent agrees and decides to look into the repair. She asks me for my serial number and reference key for diagnostics done by the repair shop. At this point I had already been on the phone for approximately 45 minutes. I'll tell the agent I will have to put her on hold to call the repair place to get the reference key. Three minutes into my call and she hangs up. I call Apple back after receiving the reference key (ADP 000) or something along those lines. Now I have to re-explain the entire situation to my new agent. The new guy decides he will authorize the repair. He tries to get me to mail my MacBook to Apple however I tell him now I want the repair done at the facility my MacBook is already at. He says they can do that and he makes the appointment for the repair. I am happy that the repair is going to be made but I ask him why the claim was denied in the first place. He claims he cannot see why it was denied and I asked to speak to his supervisor but apparently he was the highest level that you can go. Whatever at least I'm getting my screen repaired at no cost to me. I received an email confirming the appointment but they scheduled a keyboard replacement instead of a screen replacement. Once again I call Apple and explain the entire situation again and I still had to talk to this guy for 45 minutes before he rescheduled the repair. I don't remember how long at this point), I feel like notifications have been persisting in Notification Center even after I clear them. They also don't clear across devices (e.g. a read iMessage across Mac and iPhone) as smoothly anymore, if at all. In Monterey, some notifications won't clear at all, just hanging out until I restart. Anybody else noticing these things? It feels like the notification experience has overall gotten worse in recent OSes. [link] [comments] | ||

| Idea: Apple TV Colour Balance feature on macOS with external monitors Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:59 AM PST I got this idea while looking for Apple TVs on a Hackintosh (macOS) and I just remembered about the Colour Balance feature on Apple TVs. What if Apple ported this feature to macOS so you can somewhat calibrate your 3rd party monitor using your iPhone automatically instead of doing it manually then it saves it as a colour profile on macOS. (ofc you still have the option to doing it manually in case you don't have an iPhone with Face ID) [link] [comments] | ||

Nonetheless, in the technology world, Apple did popularize the modern 'unboxing' experience - back in the 90s, 00s and 10s, Apple understood the importance of the thrill their customers would experience when they received a beautifully wrapped device. I remember opening my first iPhone, the 3G, and marveling at the sleekness of the box, the way all the components were perfectly wrapped and positioned. But Apple surely didn't invent the concept of an unboxing experience. Who inspired them? [link] [comments] | ||
