Why isn't the Clock app better?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 10:38 AM PST

So, I moved my wife and I from Android to iPhone a year ago. Had a lot of people telling me it was the "better" way to go, and for the most part, I think they were right. The hardware is definitely better, and I have really enjoyed the interoperability between devices. Long term OS support is also a huge plus in my book.

Not everything is an improvement however. It confuses me why some of these things are even still an issue with ANY piece of modern technology. And the crazy thing is, I now realize almost all of my frustrations have to do with one, single app... Clock.

Coming from Android, I never even thought about how important such an app was. It just worked, and it was hugely flexible. Multiple timers, sure. Custom alarm sounds, sure. Fade in alarm sounds, sure. Separate volume for alarms from system volume, sure. As many Do Not Disturb schedules as you want, sure. Never. Even. Thought. About. It. Always did what I needed it to do.

Despite loving the hardware and the ecosystem of the iPhone, we find ourselves trying to fit our lives and schedules around the device, rather than using it as a tool to accomplish what we need. You get one timer only. So, no multitasking in the kitchen? You get one sleep schedule Do-Not-Disturb with an accompanying fade-in alarm (from a different Apple app). So, no secondary alarm, unless you're ok with it being at full volume and no fade-in via the Clock app. Enjoy waking up from an afternoon nap with that. And no more Do-Not-Disturb schedules for my wife's classes throughout the day (though you are given 1 more DnD to judiciously use as you please).

We're now working on an overly complicated process to try and import a custom alarm sound with a prerecorded fade-in via GarageBand. This will hopefully work fine, so long as my wife doesn't forget to set her iPhone's system volume to the same level every day she intends to use it.

So, what about a 3rd party app?

I completely understand why Apple doesn't let programs stick around willy-nilly in background memory consuming CPU cycles. Makes total sense. However, that means that the only apps that get to do so are Apple's own. Which means, 3rd party alarm and clock apps are not going to be as reliable. You either need to leave them in the foreground at all times without locking your phone, or they need to use hokey loopholes that let them stay in memory. If your phone updates during the night, or reboots for any reason, these apps also have to be manually reloaded.

We don't live the kind of lives that would allow us to get to work late if our alarms decide not to work some morning. Reliability of an alarm, I would think for most people, is a top priority.

...And so, here we are. Something I take for granted with modern technology. A Clock app. And over this last year, I haven't seen any of these issues even talked about on the different Apple forums I regularly peruse. Maybe I'm just jilted because I grew up using a Palm Pilot that could do a lot of these things? Or maybe I'm just living my life the "wrong way" and not what Apple expects a "normal" human being to do. Either way, is it really so much to ask of Apple, to update the one and only Clock app that's allowed to run in the background on their phones? So it can do some reasonably simple things? I know a whole bunch of 3rd party Alarm app programmers that they could hire to make it better - just go down the list in the App Store. They're a multi-TRILLION dollar company. This is worth putting some chump change towards.

Seriously, this one App is the sole reason I still have to consider going back to Android each year. Please, please, please, don't give me that reason. I'd miss all the other good stuff.

Two screwball things I'd really like to fix

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 10:49 PM PST

The Filter Field in iTunes/Music is my most-used feature, but somebody at Apple decided to hide it behind a menu pull-down. Mind you, that would be OK if I just had to toggle it on once as a preference, but EVERY SINGLE TIME you change any screen, it toggles itself back off. Who in their right mind thought THAT was good user interface design?

2nd is that my HomePods spontaneously start playing music, be it day or night. Again, who in the world thought this was a good idea for a default behavior? Sure, maybe somebody wants that behavior and it can be something you turn on, but to have any music system come on by itself with no explanation and have the OFF switch hidden in some place I cannot find is utterly insane.

If anybody has a fix for either of these I'd appreciate a quick word. Apple used to have such intuitive software design and solid principles of user-choice. Nowadays I feel like I am fighting or playing "mystery button" to simply find my music, and play what I want ONLY when I want it.

Why is no one talking about Apple removing noise cancellation from the iPhone 13 (Mini/Pro) models?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2021 03:29 PM PST

EDIT: Apple support confirmed that Apple engineers are working on it. Though, they couldn't tell yet whether it's a software or a hardware issue. In any case, there should be a solution in the coming weeks.

iPhone 12 lineup and lower have a front mic that is used for noise cancellation. The setting can be found in Accessibility -> Audio/Visual.

iPhone 13 doesn't have it. No noise cancellation at all. If you're on the street or in a loud bus, the person you're calling won't understand a thing. FaceTime has a new noise cancellation feature, called "Voice Isolation". But it cannot be used for cellular calls.

How can Apple remove such a basic feature from a 2k USD phone in 2021? I have a rotting Galaxy S6 Edge here, and the call quality isn't comparable. The S6 is crispy clear, perfect voice, zero backgroud noise, both on the sending and receiving end. The iPhone 13 Pro Max: hissing sounds, crackling, feels like the old Alcatel days.

It's a PHONE! Making phone calls is THE basic function. At first, I thought my device was faulty, but it seems like Apple removed this feature on purpose for whatever reason. Tried multiple other phones in an Apple store. Even the Genius Bar employee was surprised. He wasn't aware the noise cancellation feature was gone on iPhone 13.

Seriously, how is this not all over the media? How do iPhone 13 users not notice their calls sound like trash? Well, I guess I also blamed my provider at first cuz I couldn't believe it.

Do people just not make cellular calls anymore?

    Apple News ‘Read Later’

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 05:43 AM PST

A feature request I submitted that I was wondering if anyone else thinks about:

I often find myself finding an article I'd really like to read, but just not at that moment. I see the saved feature as a way to save articles I'd like to share with others later on, or refer back to. A read later feature could be a separate list that, when opening Apple News, feeds suggestions in the Today feed of articles you saved as a 'read later'.

To summarise, a feature that allows you to save articles that then automatically appear in your feed as 'articles you wanted to read later' or something. Much like other 'watch later' features. Otherwise if I save an article, I often forget about it as I never see it in my feed. This makes perfect sense for articles you want to save and refer back to, but a read later feature would allow those articles to be prompted - that's the key word here.
