4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 109)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 05:29 AM PDT

Welcome back, my fellow mobile gamers, to the latest roundup of the most interesting games I played and that were covered on MiniReview this week. I hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes a fun new action roguelike shooter, arguably the best Star Wars game on mobile, an awesome oldschool side-scrolling roguelike RPG, and a great adventure point-and-click puzzle game.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 108 weeks ago here.

    Let's get to the games:

RASPBERRY MASH [Game Size: 349 MB] (free)

Genre: Action / Roguelike / Shooter - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review by NimbleThor:

Raspberry Mash is a fun roguelike RPG shooter with a dark pixel art-style and five dungeon floors full of gory combat against hordes of monsters and bosses.

The biggest difference between Raspberry Mash and other popular titles such as Soul Knight and Otherworld Legends is its unique combat system. Instead of having to repeatedly spam an attack button, our character automatically targets and attacks nearby enemies when we don't move. Meanwhile, we manually take over to trigger abilities, run away from strong enemies, or dodge the insane number of bullets bosses fire at us.

This creates a gameplay experience that is fast-paced yet feels slightly more relaxed than most twin-stick shooters - but just don't mistake the simplicity for a lack of challenge because Raspberry Mash is definitely hardcore. Fortunately, we can spend souls earned from killing enemies on buying permanent character upgrades between playthroughs so that we gradually grow stronger.

The game features a crisp pixel art-style, insane boss fights, and lots of weapons, abilities, and combos that unlock over time. The biggest downside is that although the dungeons are randomly generated, there isn't a lot of variation to them. With that said, it's great as a pick-up-and-play game that almost guarantees a fun experience for a few runs.

Raspberry Mash monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency used to unlock random weapons that then have a chance of dropping during gameplay, incentivized ads for free premium currency, and an energy system that limits us to five runs before we have to pay or wait an hour. Fortunately, each run is rather lengthy, which means the game can easily be played for extended periods of time despite the energy system and the iAPs are never necessary.

Star Wars: KOTOR [Total Game Size: 2.5 GB] ($9.99)

Genre: RPG / Adventure - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review by AlexSem:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a port of an epic role-playing adventure that tells the story of a young hero on a quest to bring down a powerful Sith lord 4000 years prior to the events of the Star Wars movies.

We generate our character by picking one of three classes that each offer unique gameplay strategies and then define our Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence stats, pick a set of active and passive skills, and venture out on a journey full of rich narratives and lots of side-quests.

The game uses a popular Dungeons & Dragons system adapted for the sci-fi setting, which means each action we take needs to pass a check where our stat values determine the possibility of a successful outcome. The actual battles happen automatically in real-time, but we can pause at any moment to issue orders, use items, perform specific skills, or even wield the Force.

The story is one of the most interesting among all the Star Wars games. Each challenge we face can be dealt with in multiple ways, and our actions and dialogue choices push us towards either the Light or the Dark side, allowing or preventing certain options in future events. Furthermore, the characters we meet and befriend all become invaluable additions to our cause, both from a narrative and gameplay point of view. Meanwhile, the beautiful audio, full voice-acting, cinematic cut-scenes, and great 3D graphics that still hold up decently well to this day provide a truly unique immersive experience.

Start Wars: KOTOR is a $9.99 premium game. It is a full PC/Console quality experience ported to mobile with nothing left out, and one of the best role-playing games of all times. Even if you are not a Star Wars fan but love a good RPG adventure, be sure to give this masterpiece a try.

WazHack [Game Size: 51 MB] (free "trial")

    Genre: RPG / Roguelike / Side-scrolling - Online + Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review by JBMessin:

WazHack is a unique side-scrolling roguelike inspired by Nethack's rules and gameplay, which means every run has a different procedurally generated layout, loot needs to be identified before it can be used, and it'll take many failed attempts to reach the goal.

We begin by selecting a character from a rather large pool of classes, with each having their own specific animal companion, starting stats, and equipment. Then, we're thrown into a single-player or co-op multiplayer 2D side-scrolling dungeon that we venture ever downward, navigating through countless traps and enemies in search of a treasure of immense power.

Those familiar with the top-down perspective of most roguelikes might appreciate the change provided by WazHack's side-scrolling approach that adds an extra dimension to combat since ranged attacks are now affected by gravity and must be aimed properly. This makes the turn-based combat feel a bit more involved than the simple tap-to-attack mechanics that are typical for the genre.

The 3D models might not be visually impressive, but the UI is well-optimized for small screens, and even with a lot of action going on at the same time, the game runs smoothly on low-end devices.

WazHack is free to try until we get 300ft into the dungeon, after which we must pay $0.99 for each individual class we want to permanently unlock. This means the game should be seen as a demo of a premium game. Although this might be a turn-off to some as it's relatively quick to get to 300ft, there are at least no additional iAPs or ads.

Cube Escape Collection [Game Size: 192 MB] (free)

    Genre: Adventure / Point-and-click / Puzzle - Offline

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review by Pete McD:

Rusty Lake has earned a great deal of well-deserved acclaim for their range of whimsically disturbing escape room games and Cube Escape Collection compiles all their free games into one app, making it a great option for people new to the series or those looking to replay them.

Each game typically starts in an unassuming setting – in the first game, it's in someone's sunny living room, for example. Things then quickly get weirder, with lampshades dripping blood, sinister anthropomorphic crows, black cubes, strange figures made of a black fuzzy substance, and much more. The artwork is bizarre, and the gameplay is equally tricky. The series gradually builds up an interesting though confusing backstory, dropping breadcrumbs of plot points every so often but mainly leaving the strange events as a mystery.

The puzzles range from being relatively easy to frustratingly obtuse. Overall, they are well-designed, and it is possible to eventually solve most puzzles ourselves, which is very satisfying. Some puzzles are completely illogical, however, and seem to be nothing more than obstacles meant to artificially extend the length of the game. And although there is a built-in hint system, it's not very helpful as it often provides hints for things we have already done. Fortunately, the simple controls work well for the most part, although they are occasionally fiddly or have a delayed response.

The only monetization are optional ads to get hints, which can be completely ignored or entirely removed through a single $2.99 iAP. Having this much quality content for free is a bargain and so there's no reason not to check it out, even if only to enjoy the unique atmosphere.

Defender Chronicles was my all time favorite mobile game

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 02:37 AM PDT

I don't know how many of you had the chance to play Defender Chronicles 1 and 2 back in the day, but man, do I miss those gems!
    http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2012/05/review-defender-chronicles-ii-heroes-of.html

Unfortunately, being old 32 bits games, they cannot run on current devices, and that's a shame.

For those wondering, it was a twist on the Tower Defense genre where the maps were vertical, and the enemies would take stairs to pass next to your towers. The graphics were nice, animation were smooth, there a was a layer of RPG progress with EXP, spells, gear, etc.

But the most amazing part of this game was how balanced it was. Every level was really hard to pass without letting any enemy get away, which then unlocked a new difficulty for this map.

There was no MTX/IAP to help you, so the challenge was real and rewarding.

As far as I know, there was never any other game like that. If I'm mistaken, please tell me! :D

What are your hidden gems? Games the App Store doesn’t necessarily promote. Stimulating and rewarding, puzzle/strategy/adventure/RPG games you can always jump back into, games you’ve had for years?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 08:43 PM PDT

I have this game "Puzzle Forge 2", it's a beautiful blend of shopkeeping, resource management, puzzle, blacksmithing game that I found over five years ago, and I still play it to this day. You got anything like that?

    Updated 11/4; Ongoing ‘Rare’ Sales

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 08:31 PM PDT

-Note; subject to change at any time!

AppRaven, Appsliced and Apphookup are great sources to find all kinds of apps on sale.
Now some of these titles simply changed their pricing structures (free to try with in-app purchase for the full game, or has now implemented ads for example) while others have permanently lowered the cost and technically aren't 'on sale', but the majority of these are discounted only for a short time and may cease at any moment.
I'd take a look at some of the freebies as a few are quality and addictive even if they might not normally be your jam.
Lots of styles and genres I'm not familiar with but all of these seem pretty interesting.
As always do try and leave feedback or better yet reviews for games you might enjoy.
A lot of these Dev's are solo or very small teams of passionate gamers who could use all the support they can get.
    Hope this helps! Enjoy!

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 05:08 PM PDT

I just stopped playing Shelter Wars after playing for probably 6 months. I mainly got frustrated with the deliberate scaling so that no matter how strong you got or how much you spent enemies scaled to stay slightly stronger than you to encourage more spending. Anyone have a good suggestion for a long term strategy/simulation/rpg?

How do I move my save back to Steam for DoS2?

As the title says... moving it over was easy (and 150 hours worth of brilliant) but despite reading Larian saying you can move it back and forth, I can't find the option...

...unless it just updates the steam save when I start DoS2 there?
