3 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 78)

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 04:55 AM PST

Welcome welcome, my fellow mobile gamers - to the newest episode of my weekly roundup of the most interesting games I played last week :) Hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes an awesome new music rhythm game, a new entry into the idle tower defense genre, and a Nonstop Knight-inspired idle action RPG!

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 77 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Queen: Rock Tour [Game Size: 768 MB] (free trial - $2.99 for full game)

Genre: Music / Rhythm - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Queen: Rock Tour is a fun official music rhythm game from legendary rock band Queen, featuring 20 of their most popular songs, such as Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You.

In true Guitar Hero-style, we tap and swipe tiles that appear from the top of the screen to score points. Interestingly, each band member has a uniquely colored tile, and if we fail to tap it in time, that band member stops playing until we correctly hit another of their tiles. All the songs have three difficulty tiers, and while the easiest is almost impossible to fail, the hardest difficulty is a real challenge since our tour can get canceled if we don't play well enough.

The game has us move from venue to venue around the world, following Queen's actual real-life career starting in London in 1974 and ending in 1986. As we progress, we get to play new songs and unlock a large range of historic images and trivia about the band. We can even customize the look of each band member by equipping various iconic outfits from their career.

Queen: Rock Tour has a free trial that lets us play "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Seven Seas of Rhye", whereas the full game and all 20 songs are unlocked through a single $2.99 iAP. If you're a Queen fan, this is a must-play with great nostalgic value.

Summoner's Greed [Total Game Size: 289 MB] (free)

Genre: Tower Defense / Idle - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Summoner's Greed is an endless idle tower defense game where we play as the bad guy – a powerful summoner who has broken into a Castle and is now trying to protect his stolen goods from the kingdom's knights that have been sent to retrieve it.

Starting with just a single monster, we place it on one of the nine available tower slots to start defeating enemies. We get an orb each time we complete a wave for the first time, which we can spend ten of to summon a random new monster and place it on the map to improve our defenses.

The monsters have unique attack patterns and can be leveled up by spending gold acquired by defeating enemies. If just a single enemy reaches our stolen treasure, we die and must start from an earlier wave, although we get to keep our monsters and their levels.

Unlike many idle games, resetting doesn't reward us a special currency that can be spent on progressing faster the next time. This means the game can feel rather slow-paced, which is the game's biggest downside. We do, however, receive gold even when offline, which means we can always upgrade our monsters whenever we return to the game.

It's a simpler and more relaxing take on the idle tower defense genre than a game like Epic Monster TD, which makes it more appealing to casual players.

Summoner's Greed monetizes through iAPs for premium currency and various convenience upgrades, such as doubling the game speed. There are relatively frequent "opportunities" to watch incentivized ads to receive a reward, but I never felt forced to watch these ads to progress. The game can easily be enjoyed as a free player.

Solo Knight [Game Size: 338 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Idle / Action - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Solo Knight is a cel-shaded idle action RPG where we progress through endless floors of a dungeon, upgrading equipment and character perks while our hero fights automatically.

Inspired by Nonstop Knight, the core gameplay focuses on incrementally improving our character by equipping new loot with unique stats and effects. Each piece of equipment even has a special ability that we must trigger manually during combat to deal with strong enemies. The only other direct control we have over our character is that we can tap to move it. Except during boss fights, this is rarely necessary to survive, however.

With lots of different weapon types and over 600 perks unlocked through a massive perk tree, we can customize our character in almost endless unique ways. This min-maxing and customization is part of what makes this otherwise fully idle game entertaining.

Solo Knight monetizes through a $9.99 season pass that provides extra rewards and additional iAPs for a premium currency. Neither is necessary to enjoy the game but allow you to progress faster.

Any good online guild based idle/clicker games?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 06:03 AM PST

I'm looking for a clicker game where guilds actually matter and add to the fun. At the least as a guild you have to get X number of clicks per Y to unlock something new or some mechanic like that, but preferably you as a guild go on "raids" and have to click together to have enough power to win, or something like that.

Is there anything along these lines?

Are they any other games like the sims

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:46 PM PST

I've tried to get into the sims mobile game but they all suck. It's nothing like the actual games, so I was wondering if there where any other games like the computer sims.

Any Minesweeper based games with actual progression?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:46 AM PST

Seems like all the minesweeper games just asks what difficulty you want and generates a square for you. Anyone know of one that has levels with progressively harder shapes and sizes?

Request recommendations: offline playable merge games

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:22 PM PST

I just started merge mansion and I enjoy it. However most of the time I want to play it is at work on breaks and reception is blocked by my companies building. (Too much metal and machinery) Because of this, it's difficult to play any game that requires a data connection to play. Are there any good merge style games you can play offline that you recommend? I'd be up for any puzzle game as well. I have played and gotten bored of most of the King games (after months or years of play) if that shows you the types of games I mindlessly play. Thank you to anyone who helps!

Any ARPGs with tap to move mechanics?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:31 PM PST

i have an ipad but i hate playing it like a controller. Minus the balders gate series (or anything by Overhaul Games), every other arpg has virtual joysticks, with no option to change it. even most MOBAs on iOS use virtual joysticks. is there any that at least give you the option to use my finger like a mouse in some of these games?

Question on Dead Cells | beating Hand of the King second time

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:37 AM PST

Hi all. I have defeated the Hand of the King for the second time. I have 1 boss cell, but not activated in this playthrough. After I defeated him, there seems to be nothing I could do. When Googling to see whether others had the same problem, people say that you need to detach your head and crawl in the fountain. You apparently gain this ability by picking up the homunculus rune. I cannot remember if I picked this up, and I don't know how to detach my head. I am using an Xbox One controller, but R3 does not work.

Anyone else here with the same experience or a tip?

EDIT: found the problem. I apparently had 2 controls mapped to the same button. :-S

Any game similar too lords mobile?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:19 PM PST

I use to play this a long time ago which I found was quite fun but eventually got bored with it. Is there any games like this that you would say is better? I don't mind paying a bit of money but would prefer if it's fairly F2P friendly.

Any fun idle games like Loop Hero?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 02:20 PM PST

Does anyone know any games like Loop Hero on iOS currently? (somewhat idle, combo building, rogue like). Something that combines city building and combat would be fun. The idle hero games (like AFK Arena) have tended to bore me. Wishing Loop Hero was on IOS but seems like it might be a while.
