Big Sur update failed on MacBook Air 2019 128gb Posted: 02 Feb 2021 11:50 PM PST Yesterday, my girlfriend tried to update her MacBook Air 2019 128gb to Big Sur. The update started and the progress bar showed with an estimated time remaining showing. It gets around halfway to 2/3 of the way done, then an error message shows saying "An error occurred preparing the software update." (similar to the issue in this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252038616?answerId=253922337022&page=2) This happens every time we try to update. Apparently, the common issue seems to be there wasn't enough space for the OS to update properly (then why would it allow the update to start in the first place??) She tried to boot into recovery mode and recover using the time machine, but no password she tried worked. She's never changed the password, so we're certain the main one we try is the right one (this is also a common problem seen in that apple post^), but we tried others just to be thorough. Right now, I'm just trying to create a backup onto an extra 500gb external hard drive I have as she's never backed it up externally before. I'm thinking worst comes to worst I might need to just factory reset. I'm not very versed in macOS as I am a Windows user so I'm hoping to get some advice. I used the disk utility in recovery mode to erase the external drive and format it into Mac OS X journaled and GUID Partition Map. But I'm not exactly sure what to do from here. Is there a way to create a new time machine backup? what do I back up to ensure her files aren't lost? Thanks for the help in advance :) [link] [comments]
Should I update from Catalina to Big Sur on 2015 MacBook Air? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:55 AM PST I updated it last night to Catalina along with the smaller updates, because I hadn't updated in years, but after googling and reading posts I'm not sure if I should bother downloading Big Sur. I like the new aesthetic but apart from that I'm not sure what else it does or if I need to. I mainly use my Mac for uni or to store my pictures, and occasionally game using origin and an android simulator thing (blue stack) I just don't want to download something if it'll mess up a good thing and I've seen some people say they stuck with Mojave and didn't even update it to Catalina which is more confusing for me. Thanks in advance and apologies as I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to apple computers! [link] [comments]

Did someone just hack my MacBook? Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:25 PM PST I have a M1 MacBook Pro. About 15 minutes ago my internet suddenly slowed down and even though I've never activated a guest user I noticed that there was a guest account created and it had a password that I didn't even know of. I started to freak out a little. Moreover there was a new shared file even though I've never ever enabled one. When I went to users and groups settings and went on the guest user "Allow guest users to connect to shared folders" option was selected. I'm a computer science major and I'm very aware of my preferences. This was definitely weird. What should I do? I'm using a TP link extender. I had heard about security issues before. Could that be related? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:25 PM PST I switched to a MacBook a few months ago and one of my biggest bugbears from switching from Windows is multi-display switching. When I'm at the office, I use the built-in display as my primary screen, and have an external 1920x1080 display that I switch between extended and mirrored mode regularly. The annoyance is that every single time I switch the external display to mirror the MacBook's built-in display, it defaults to "Optomise for HP xyz display" and forces the MB's retina display to 1920x1080 with black letterboxing. When I switch it to optimise for the built-in display, it resets my scaling on that display to default, and I have to switch it back to More Space where I always use it. I used Sidecar the other day with my iPad Pro 11" (in separate display mode, not mirrored) and as soon as it connected, it reset my scaling to default again on the MacBook, and I had to go in and change it back. When I switch from mirrored to using both as separate displays, it leaves optimises both monitors for their native resolutions and leaves my scaling how I want it. When I mirror the built-in display, I just want it to leave the built-in MB display alone and adjust the external display to suit. Is this even possible and I'm just missing something? Big Sur 11.2 seems to have fixed the Macbook Pro 16 Inch speaker pop issue Posted: 02 Feb 2021 01:09 PM PST Just finished my upgrade. Ever since Big Sur has come out I've been checking to see if it rectified the annoying Speaker Pop issue that was prevalent in the 16 Inch Pros. This one seems to have done the trick. No more Pops when skipping around Audio! [link] [comments]

What is up with the whole 32-bit games thing? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:26 AM PST I have a Macbook air from 2015 and it has MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 and for some reason I can't play any 32-bit games anymore? It's really a pain because certain games I've bought without thinking simply can't be played. The thing is I don't really understand it; does this mean my Mac is too old and it's the version of MacOS that is too old? Or does it mean the games are ''too old''? Also, are 32-bit games playable on newer Macbooks like the Macbook pro 2020? Because I really want to buy that for my next Macbook, but if 32-bit games will never be playable on any new Macbooks then I don't really see the point of still going for Mac instead of Windows. Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:06 PM PST Current I have a MacBook Pro and a external display with peripherals. I want to know if there's a way to turn on my Mac without lifting the lid and signing in and. It gets annoying to turn it on then tuck it away everyday. [link] [comments]

Roll back to Catalina from Big Sur, Photos library incompatible .. grrr.. Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:35 PM PST Updated to Big Sur shortly after it was released and bamboozled by the performance tax it had on my Mac. Tried to roll back to Catalina, all was good until I tried opening my Photos, nope... it says library needs a new version of Photos (in Big Sur) to open.. Was totally farked by this. So cringed, cried, restored the Big Sur just for the sake of my photo library. Anyone able to downgrade the photo library along the way? [link] [comments]
Safari (or FireFox) autofill extension/add-on Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:15 PM PST In order to get vaccinated I have to go to the relevant sites repeatedly. Anyone know, please, of a Safari or FireFox add-on/extension that will allow me to populate with an autofill multiple fields - more than just name and address etc… custom - on multiple pages of the sites on which I try to make appointments, please? TIA! [link] [comments]
Macbook Pro Mid 2015 HDMI Netflix Firefox Issues. Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:08 PM PST Hi, When using the current build of Catalina on my Mid 2015 Macbook Pro( Intel GPU only) with firefox and netflix with video output coming from the HDMI port to a Acer KN242HYL (1080P, Refresh Rate: 60Hz) netflix looks extremely blocky. It displays fine on the Macbooks built in screen without any issues. Would this be a monitor compatibility issue? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:42 PM PST Hi all! Is there a way to force open an app? I have this discontinued app for years and it was working until couple of weeks ago. But I don't get any messages about compatibility it just doesn't seem to do anything when I try to open. I just need to take out some of the info from there. I'm on Big Sur. TIA! AppleScript: Save a set of Google Chrome browser tabs to .html file that will reopen them Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:47 PM PST Here's a feature that I've wanted forever: the ability to save a set of tabs to a local .html file, which, when opened, will reopen all of the tabs. Why do I want that? I often conduct a lot of research on a topic, resulting in a collection of web pages. When I reach a stopping point, I want to save the collection of web pages for future reference - maybe tomorrow, maybe next year. And if the web pages are all related to a certain project for which I've created a folder in my file system, I want to save the collection of web pages in the folder for the project. Lots of Google Chrome extensions pledge something like that functionality. I tried at least 25 of them tonight. None of them do this specific thing. Every single one insisted on maintaining its own, browser-extension-specific list of tab collections - absolutely not what I want! In those cases, (a) each tab list has no connection to the related project in my file system; and (b) none of the tab collections are accessible outside of that one browser where the extension is installed; and (c) all of the tab collections are jammed together into a disorganized set with no relation to one another; and (d) if the extension becomes corrupted or the machine has trouble, I might lose all of my tab collections, which would absolutely suck. So I rolled up my sleeves and got my hands dirty with some AppleScript. I have it bound to a hotkey (using ManyTricks Butler), Command+Shift+S, which only triggers if Google Chrome has focus. It retrieves the list of URLs in the active window; asks for a filename; and saves a .html file with a tiny bit of JavaScript that opens each of the scripts in a new tab, and then closes itself. The only additional step that I had to take was to allow pop-ups for all sites in Google Chrome. (Ideally, Chrome would have let me allow pop-ups for any file:/// link, but Chrome doesn't want to let me do that. So, all pop-ups are enabled.) This code does exactly what I wanted. (Well, almost. It might've been nice to save the actual content and scroll position of every web page as well, but that's a bridge too far.) Here's the code. [link] [comments]

Anyone know if the 2012 MBP Retina can be made to run Big Sur? Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:51 PM PST I just found out it lists late 2013 and now I'm not happy. 2012 Retina support Catalina and that requires Metal so I was shocked to find that Big Sur doesn't support it. I know that DosDude or someone like that had patches for older macs, maybe there's one for this? Does anyone know what the exact requirement is? The chips and display are the same I think. The video should be fine, so what's the hold up? [link] [comments]
Firmware problem with IMac(Late 2015) Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:33 PM PST On Big Sur...no problems but can't update my firmware on Late 2015 Imac. I've heard there are firmware update problems with this model. Any thoughts about what I can do? [link] [comments] |
