    Downgrading to High Sierra

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:47 PM PST

Good day. Upgraded to Mac OS Catalina few weeks ago, but only recently found out photoshop CS6 does not work on it. Mistake on my part. Does anyone have any detailed instructions on how to safely downgrade to Mac OS High Sierra while retaining my files? Thank you in advance for your time and inputs.

Disable all security features of Mojave/Catalina/etc

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:23 AM PST

Is it possible to allow everything to control everything without having to go through one million nagging security dialogues every time I want something to be automated? I don't need a lecture on how this is insecure, I just want to know if it's possible, and how to achieve it. It seems information is sparse on Google regarding this, and when I asked in the Apple forum, one user claimed to know how to achieve it, but also claimed it could violate the forum community rules writing it out.

Preferably I would never want to have to approve:
    - Keystrokes

    - System Events (run Apple Script)

    - Control other applications (in this case Keyboard Maestro + Moom, Terminal, etc)

The reason for this is that I use several automator scripts for various tasks in development, and every time I change a single line of apple script in automator, I have to re-allow it. It's killing my workflow to a degree where it's almost no use of using Automator. I don't download shady stuff, and the computer is basically only a "workhorse"-computer.

Will macOS Big Sur download & install automatically?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:17 AM PST

I'm currently running macOS Catalina. I do not want to update to Big Sur when it becomes available, but I would like to continue to receive the latest macOS updates for Catalina.

Does macOS Big Sur install automatically or require user prompt?

Software updates - latest macOS compatibility

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:00 AM PST

I am a music producer and I was wondering:
Every year Apple presents new macOS in June and then releases it approximately in October-November, so developers could have enough time to update all their software so it would be compatible with the latest macOS version. BUT STILL somehow every year ALL developers strongly ask NOT to update macOS for good 2-3 months in order for them to update all their plug-ins and stuff. What about that half a year? How come? Somebody please explain this to me.

My MPB 2020 keeps on going flat overnight or in a bag.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:13 PM PST

I got it just over a month ago and I've recently adopted the lifestyle of just closing the lid in-between uses as that was suggested as the way to use them rather than shutting them down.

About 4 or 5 times now the laptop has basically gone flat overnight in my bag or just lost all of its power while closed.

When it turns back on if it didn't run completely flat there isn't anything running or using loads of CPU that I believe could have done it.

I just need advice, maybe software recommendations, for how I can find and fix this as it makes me stressed that my full laptop could be totally empty by the morning and I don't have time to charge.

    Thanks in advance

    Unordered Lists in Pages

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:25 PM PST

Does anyone know why Apple is the only word processing app in the world not to use standard unordered list formatting? Or a better question is, does anyone know a workaround so I can properly used unordered lists/bullets in a Pages document?

Replace 2nd hard drive in MacBook Pro

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:27 PM PST

Hello. I have a 2012 unibody with a 1.5TB HDD in the optical drive bay as well as an SSD boot drive. My home folder lives on the 1.5TB HDD. I have just about filled it. I just made a clone with Superduper to a new 2TB HDD. When I installed that and booted up, macOS doesn't see the home folder and won't log into my user account. I put the 1.5TB back where it was and the MacBook loads the user just fine. How can I accomplish this clone onto the 2TB?

My Hard Drive Doesn't Meet Requirements for an update?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 01:57 PM PST

I have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro that is already running Catalina, however, it cannot update to the latest version. I tried downloading directly from Apple and I get the error that says the drive doesn't meet the requirements. Is this computer done for before I upgrade to a SSD and new RAM? I don't want to upgrade it just for it to be stuck on 10.15.4

(I really just wanted to download iMovie lol)

Unpopular Opinion: Edge is currently the best browser for Mac.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:56 PM PST

Wow, can't believe I'm actually saying this, but Edge is genuinely a breath of fresh air compared to all the other browsers I've tried. The new Safari is super slow and clunky on my 2015 MBA, Chrome gobbles memory and Firefox wasn't awful, but didn't love the design and compatibility.

Edge on the other hand, has all the benefits of a Chromium codebase, with stricter privacy options available (albiet disabled from default). It's just so fast and fluid, plus it has the uber smooth scrolling from the older Safari versions.

Give it a try, it might surprise you.

    Big Sur release date

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:44 PM PST

I've been very scarred (for paranoia reasons) to upgrade to mac os big sur beta, and I told myself that when it comes out, ima get it immediately (cause it looks SUPER cool, and solves a bunch of problems that I was having with safari.) does anyone have any idea, when the actual release date is?

Clean MacOS reinstall without re-downloading whole iCloud Photos library?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:20 AM PST

I prefer doing a reformat + fresh install each year when a new OS is released (i.e. not an in-place upgrade, not a restore from Time Machine).

In the past I used Lightroom Classic to store my photo collection and it was easy to drag my photo library back onto my Mac from a backup drive after the re-install.

This year I moved my entire library from Lightroom to Photos with iCloud sync enabled.

After I reformat and clean-install MacOS 11, if I drag my 100+ GB `Pictures/Photos Library` folder into place from a backup drive before logging into iCloud for the first time, is it safe to assume my Mac will do some verification and recognize that it doesn't need to download the 100+ GB of photos from iCloud?

On a related note I'm pretty sure there's no way to avoid the download for my iCloud Drive folder though. I recently logged out of iCloud and back in to fix an authentication issue, and my Mac re-downloaded my entire iCloud Drive folder and created an `icloud Drive (Archive)` folder with the old, identical contents. I moved to iCloud Drive from Dropbox, which always handled re-installs just fine (I'd move my `Dropbox` backup folder into place, then log in, and it would do some quick checksums and declare that the folder was up-to-date. Very nice.)

My only Internet access is via cellular hotspot, so I try to take pro-active measures to manage data usage when possible.

Thanks for any tips / experiences!

    Preview Erasing PDF Annotations

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:09 AM PST

There have been multiple instances recently where preview on my Mac has erased text that I've added to a PDF after saving it. It makes me extremely upset that this happens because much of my schoolwork requires me to annotate on a PDF and submit the file. I've had to completely redo assignments thanks to this. Note: I'm running the BigSur beta, but this issue also occurred in Catalina.

Connecting Macbook Pro 13'' 2020 to two 4K external displays

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 01:03 PM PST

    Hi!

Some time ago I bought a 2020, 13'' Macbook Pro (i5 1.4ghz, two thunderbold ports) and I would like to order two 27'' 4K external displays. The model I want to buy has a HDMI and DisplayPort inputs.

I want to have 4K@60hz resolution on both displays so a quick search on Google and I found this. To use this docking station I also need to install DisplayLink app/drivers, but there are some mixed opitions about it. Apperantly its not stable and is causing some CPU usage spikes. Beside that everything about that docking station is pretty much awesome.

Is this a proper way of connecting a Macbook Pro to two 4K displays (and getting 60hz)?

Is there more "native" way, without using DisplayLink?

I would love to read some comments about experience with such setups.
