Sister is about to get a 2020 Macbook Pro, what does she need to know with regards to the OS? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 04:01 PM PDT Hi, my sister is about to get a Macbook Pro for college (my parents paid for it, which is very kind) and I wanted to know what MacOS is like / where everything is etc. Just the basic stuff to help her out. Sure it is her laptop, but im very tech-savvy and she will probably want me to help her. Im not about to bash Apple or MacOS, the only reason im asking for guidance is because im a Linux user (I would rather stab myself in the eyes than use Windows) and im not familiar with MacOS. Linux works beautifully for what I need and is by far the best OS for me, but it will be interesting to have a real hands-on with MacOS. Edit - Thanks so much for the feedback so far guys, two-finger click and the quitting out of apps seems to be what ill make her aware of most. The iCloud side of things is easy to do. I'll also report back what i make of MacOS as im excited to give it a go. Can't be any worse than Windows, but you lot are going to have to work hard at getting me to switch from Linux. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:31 AM PDT I'm curious to hear what your thoughts are on the direction we're seeing Mac OS take- unifying a lot of UX from the iPadOS and bridging the systems with tighter integration. On one had I know it'll result in an even stronger ecosystem of devices- handoff, airdrop, etc. But it has me thinking there will some compromises like removing a lot of previous control from the user, like they've done with SIP (I understand it can be toggled off). My fear is they'll decide even an advanced user doesn't need certain system controls or terminal privileges without jumping hoops. Not to mention compatibility; Rosetta2 being the backbone to transition so many apps makes me think the first couple years will be very messy. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:15 PM PDT Hey guys, sorry I'm very new to Reddit but my daughter said this was a good place to get help. Recently, I tried to send around 150 photos from my iPad to iMac (on the most recent version of Catalina) in my apartment house. When I initially started the transfer, there were two iMac devices on the iPad, which I assumed were duplicates of the same device; when I sent the photos, I don't remember accepting the files on the iMac or whether the iMac had been receiving the photos while the iPad was 'downloading' them. After the process completed, I've tried searching for the photos in iMac, but I can't find them. I'm now worried about the possibility they've been sent to the wrong person, especially because those were family photos. I was wondering whether it was possible for there to be two devices on an iPad, but if you select one of them, the files would send but not be received, and rather just be lost during the transfer. For context, I have asked my neighbors whether they owned iMacs; only two of them did, one of whom wasn't at home at the time and the other whose iMac was shut off. Also, during the transfer, I doesn't remember seeing the other 'iMac' device on the iMac I meant to transfer the photos to. Finally, when I tried to change the airdrop name of the iMac to 'iMac (name)', I initially saw only one device, and later two devices for around 5 seconds, and then only device again. Some help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks! Tl:DR -- Airdrop files are missing, worried that they may have gone to wrong person or whether this is common bug [link] [comments]

Odd bug when opening Pictures folder Posted: 03 Sep 2020 09:53 PM PDT Hey gang, in Catalina I have a goofy Finder issue. If I try to open the Pictures folder directly by double-clicking the folder then suddenly I can't click anything else. The finder instantly snaps back to the desktop, not allowing me to click on anything else. If I reboot the computer it's fine again until I try to go back into the Pictures folder. What gives? Just more Catalina weirdn [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Sep 2020 09:45 PM PDT I have a system where files and videos are tagged with keywords on their attached XML files so I can tag files across systems and keep them in sync. Issue is, smart folders on MacOS seem to have difficulty reading XML sidecar attachments. Can I have smart folders to only show files with a corresponding XML tag? I.E, when filename.mp4 has no tag X but filename.xmp has tag X, how can I get a smart folder to include filename.mp4 but not filename.xmp? [link] [comments]

Any recommendations for a USB-C Power Delivery powered Thunderbolt dock? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:24 PM PDT Hi. I need a Thunderbolt dock for my MacBook Pro and I see a lot of options (e.g., Cal Digit, Anker, etc.) but all have their proprietary power INPUT sources with generally large power bricks. I already have a nice setup with a RAVpower USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger. Does anyone know of a Thunderbolt dock that draws its owner from a USB-C PD source, rather than via a proprietary power source? [link] [comments]
USB drive “read-only state” need help removing read only and format. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:21 PM PDT So I have a 1tb pny elite and I was transferring my steam library from one pc to another and when I was done I shut down the bootcamp MacBook Pro and removed the usb drive. Then olugfed it back into my windows desktop and no joy. Can't read, can't write or format. I've tried clearing the read only state in windows via diskpart, clean, attributes disk clear readonly, and event a registry edit.. I'm not familiar with the terminal tools in macOS and was wondering if there's anything worth trying there, as the disk utility is also a no go. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Do you know what's making this pop-up autocorrect? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:17 PM PDT weird pop-up that has been plaguing me: backstory: I use a text expander application called TypeIt4Me. For those unfamiliar, you can type a few characters, and it expands the rest of the word, the sentence, the paragraph, whatever you program. When I type in the TI4M abbreviation I created for my phone number, (which is "pphone") I get this little dialog popping up: https://share.getcloudapp.com/L1uJypJz (I changed the number but the font & color are correct) Do you recognize this? It only shows up with certain words & phrases and I don't know what's doing it or how to turn it off. I use TI4M a lot, but it's not that app, because TI4M is supposed to expand to just the numbers and hyphens... but this expansion/autocorrect/whatever includes the parentheses... BUT it triggers from the same abbreviation as TI4M?!?! I've been asking around and nobody else seems to know! Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
2020 Imac 27 - how to make sure correct verison of the beta? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:13 PM PDT 2020 imac 27 here - How can I ensure I'm downloading the correct new beta 6? Backstory: previously unsuccessfully tried installing beta 5 ...obviously with no success woops. So I Un-enrolled, then re-enrolled today, removed the 'install big sur' from my applications. The update showing in 'software update' never went through process of downloading the ~12gb file, its as if it's still wanting to install the old beta 5. In 'system update' in preferences it shows the file as 11.0 --12.13 GB. How would I know I'm not just re-installing the old beta? OR How can I remove the temporary beta 5 and have it try to re-download the new beta version 6? [link] [comments]

HDMI not working, can't detect displays. Please help. Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:12 AM PDT My Macbook Air ( OS X El Capitan) suddenly stopped being able to connect with my Smart TV(Phillips) through HDMI cabal and miniDisplay port adapter. I think it could have some thing to do with me updating my mac 3 days ago. I hadn't updated it for years. Every time I plugg in the HDMI and change source on the TV the screen on my mac blinks (as it always has) as though it is trying to connect or whatever, but now nothing happens after that. My girlfriends newer Macbook (Mac OS Catalina version 10.154) isn't able to detect display either through using a USB-C-HDMI adapter. The screen on hers doesn't blink like mine. Please can someone help us with this problem? We bought both the adapters new today as we thought the old one could be the issue. Also tried using different HDMI cabals and tried the different HDMI ports in the TV (which I have tested work). [link] [comments]
macOS Catalina (Self-Assigned IP) after switch from Bootcamp Posted: 03 Sep 2020 03:49 PM PDT I'm experiencing a problem with my Satechi 3-in-1 USB C adapter. I use the adapter to get ethernet for my Mac. The same adapter is used for macOS and Bootcamp. Occasionally (more often than not) after I have used Windows and boot back into macOS the USB LAN will not connect to DHCP and is stuck on a Self-Assigned IP. Can I force a disconnect from the network or even reset this device in a way that the Mac can communicate with it properly. The only solution I've found is to reboot the router. This is NOT AT ALL practical to do each time this occurs. I'm happy to type something in manually each time to fix the problem temporarily.. just not reset the network. [link] [comments]

Exporting library from Photos? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT Once upon a time (maybe before Catalina?), the Photos application library had a "Masters" section that was physically partitioned into a hierarchy of directories based on year/month/day/time. The photos imported would still be timestamped with their original capture date. I just discovered--angrily, after a rather large import of photos--that the current version of Photos (Catalina?) has dropped that, and now maintains its own internal database. There is just an "originals" folder now with a set of subfolders numbered 0-F, where imported files are hexadecimally named and sorted into those directories based on their leading letter or number.
Worse, it's also virtually impossible to make a meaningful backup of only the most recent import. While presumably this was done for internal application efficiency, the end result is that the files that are now on disk are a jumble, only understandable by Photos based on its library. I was a big fan of Photos precisely for the reasons that it was non-destructive with image/video timestamps and stored the files in an accessible manner. This change, discovered after importing a large amount of photos, has instantly soured me on the application. Is there a way to rebuild or export the physical photos and videos files with their original timestamps, or am I pretty much screwed here? -- EDIT: It turns out the photos still have their original timestamps. I don't know what I was looking at, but at least it's possible to dump the raw files somewhere and still have chronological access to them. Given that, it's now possible to make a smart Finder folder that displays files in the originals folder with a timestamp greater than the last import date. It's not ideal, but at least it gives me some way of exporting the desired files without having to necessarily back up the entire archive. [link] [comments]
BEST way to clean install MacOS but keep programs and files? Posted: 03 Sep 2020 02:14 PM PDT I want to wipe my MacBook Air 2018 and put a fresh/clean copy of MacOS on it. I have noticed it has started to slow down a bit and think a fresh copy is in order. I do not want to lose my applications the are currently installed and I would love to keep my files on desktop as well. I am okay with having to re setup things like mail app if needed. I do have a time machine backup, but my question is if I restore from it....do I bring along all the congestion/potentially broken files that might be causing my slow down? [link] [comments]
2011 Macbook Air 11 inch not booting Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:24 PM PDT I am hoping someone can give me some guidance on what I can do. My 2011 Macbook Air gives me the chime sound and stays on the gray screen. Everything that I have tried stays on the chime and gray screen and does not move from it. I did install an OWC 250GB SSD a long time ago from the original 64GB that came with it. I have tried Recovery Mode (Cmd + R) stays on a gray screen, safe boot (Shift) stays on a gray screen, created a mac os x usb boot disk but holding option and turning on the mac also doesnt do anything any stays on the gray screen. Could this is a the SSD hard drive failure or somethign else. I dont mind spenidng some money and getting another SSD but I would hate to get it and then have it not be the issue. I have tried Recovery Mode (Cmd + R) stays on a gray screen, safe boot (Shift) stays on a gray screen, created a mac os x USB boot disk but holding the option and turning on the mac also doesn't do anything any stays on the gray screen Again I hear the chime sound but stays on the gray screen no matter what I press. All peripherals are disconnected other than the power cord. [link] [comments]
Can't login to iMessage/Facetime Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:17 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm on big sur, but i had a problem logging into facetime/iMessage. I can login to iCould successfully, no problems. I tested my mom's apple id on imessage and facetime and it worked perfectly. For facetime, I get "No reachables addresses" and after I added one it still doesn't work. On imessage it logs me in and then kicks me back into the login page after 10 seconds. BTW, this is only an apple id, don't have an iphone just mac [link] [comments] |
