Apple Macbook Monitor for USB-C MacBook? 4k?

Apple Macbook Monitor for USB-C MacBook? 4k?

    Monitor for USB-C MacBook? 4k?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:02 PM PDT

I found an LG 4k USB-C monitor that is 27 inches that is 4k. I want to replace my Thunderbolt Display as it is old.

I'm wondering, will 4k make the text and everything even smaller? Because right now at 2560x1440 it is already fairly small. I know that a 5K monitor will give the appearance of the monitor I have now, meaning the same size icons, text, etc, but will just be double the pixels.

With 4k, is that something it can do? Can it look like a 2560x1440 as far as the size of things but be in 4k resolution?

Because if not I'm afraid it would be too small to read anything.

*EDIT* I may have that the wrong way around, I may be afraid that it'll get too big rather than small.

    MacBook Air VS Pro

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:48 PM PDT

I am going into university for engineering and need a new laptop. The specs I am seeking are: i7, 16gb ram, 512 SSD. I can customize both the air and the pro to those specs. The difference in price would be about $400 CAD, the air being cheaper. Considering I'll be running programs like SolidWorks and autocad, which one should I get? What would I be losing/gaining from getting each?

    Thanks!

HELP: MBA 2020 low power options, battery cycle, temperature

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:45 PM PDT

Hi! First time MBA user here. Just wanted to ask, are there any "low power" options to save battery? (Much like the option we have on iPhones). Is there a built-in option or do I have to use other apps for that? Please also suggest apps that would do the trick- if you know of any!

Also, how do I know my battery cycle and the temperature of my CPU?

Thanks a bunch! I plan to post my 1 week review of my MBA base model to help our little community in my own way somehow 😇

I want to throw my MBP 2016 into the sea

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 05:51 AM PDT

This is more than a bit of a rant post.

I got my late 2016 MBP (base model, no touchbar) in early 2017. It was subsidized through work but I own it.

Performance-wise I've been quite pleased with this device. I don't have intense computing needs, so really the only time this thing chokes up is during extended video conferencing (which means it chokes up all the time nowadays, sadly).

But I am about to take this thing into the Genius Bar for the third time today, which I find insane and very frustrating.

Maybe 1.5 years after purchase, the "n" key stopped working. Not unusual for the first-gen butterfly keyboard design. OK, bummer, but they have a program to fix it. These things happen, right?

I had to wait for the genius bar appointment, take it in, wait for parts to come in (during which time I carried around an external keyboard), bring it back, and wait for the repair.

Shortly after I got it back (with the "better" butterfly keyboard, which is still absolute, unbelievable trash), I realized sound was not coming out of one bank of speakers. Back to the shop, this time it had to go to a repair center and I was without the machine for a week, while they replaced a whole slew of internals that had been messed up during the initial repair.

Fast forward to today. I started experiencing the "spotlight effect" with my display recently, so I made an appointment to bring it in yet again. The best I could get was an appointment 1.5 weeks out (Covid and back to school, so I get it). In the interim, the display has completely crapped out and I'm stuck on external monitors (which is a drag for video calls not to mention my workflow).

To Apple's credit, I haven't paid a dime for these repairs and I expect this display issue will be the same story because they have a quality program for it. But I am just absolutely salty about this machine. Having this thing go into the repair shop will be a big disruption, and it'll be the third time in nearly as many years I've had to deal with such a disruption.

I know there are reasons for this (the 2016 first-gen redesign high among them) and Apple has exhibited great customer service throughout, but good grief. I went with Apple for reliability and this is anything but.

I feel like a bought a lemon and a big part of me wants to just try to get them to take it as a trade in today and rid myself of it for a keyboard that works and some peace of mind.

is the butterfly keyboard repair worth doing?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:28 AM PDT

I have a 2017 13 inch MBP with touchbar and a lot of the keys are messed up (started off "stuck" i.e. wouldn't type the letter but then progresses to repeating letters) like the n,b,z,x keys and the spacebar. I kind of want to bring it into the Apple store to get the keys/keyboard replaced but not sure if I should go ahead with it since college classes are starting next week and i'm not sure if it would be worth the hassle.

My concerns are: first i'm not sure if they replace the whole keyboard or just the ones affected, and so if the other keys will just mess up later on... well it just seems kind of like a stopgap and i guess i'm already kind of used to it now. or maybe they do replace the whole keybboard but... i'm not sure if the replacement is worth it? is it as prone to messing up/an actually better keyboard?

What’s the quickest way to screenshot and copy that pic?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:10 AM PDT

I usually screenshot, then have to click on share > preview to be able to ctrl + c. But then when I close it out (preview) , it always asks me to save it in a location, which I'll have to click delete.

Is there a faster was to do this? Just want to screenshot, copy and paste the pic, and be done with the screenshot.

    MacBook Pro 2020 defective keyboard

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 08:17 PM PDT

I bought a MacBook Pro 2020 13" and it's been less than 3 weeks (I haven't used it much either) and the "z" key is slanted. The right half is fine but the left half is pressed inwards like it's stuck. It's like a diagonal slant. I talked to apple and they said that it's a defect and they'll either repair it or send me a new laptop. The people at apple said that this isn't a common occurrence and that there's just a defect with mine. I'm worried that this keyboard problem will happen again even with a fixed/replaced laptop, and I didn't spend so much money on this laptop to have to keep spending money to fix it. My question is, is this a common occurrence and should I be worried that this will happen again? Should I sell my laptop and get a different laptop or should I keep using my Mac? I had a MacBook Air for 5 years before and had no problems. Is this keyboard problem widespread and should I be worried about it and discontinue my MacBook Pro use? Appreciate any advice!

Dual 1440p monitors on a MBP at 144Hz

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 06:57 PM PDT

    Is this currently possible?

I know running 1440p should be fine, and if it's capped at 60Hz, how is performance for just running two 1440p monitors?

I have a 13-inch MBP with two ports from 2019, and I'm wondering if there are hubs out there that I could use. I tried a USB-C to HDMI cable that I own and was able to get 100Hz on one display, and that is okay enough. Nearly all of the hubs I've seen on Amazon say they'll do two 4K60 displays but can't find any that talks about 1440p at 144Hz.

With what I'm asking for a laptop, I feel like I'll have to jump over to a 4 port model to be able to easily manage more connections.

    1 x 16GB DDR3 RAM on MBP 2012 anyone?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Has anyone tried using a single 16Gb DDR3 SODIMM (1600Mhz) RAM module on their Macbook Pro mid 2012?

Curious coz, my other RAM slot is quite defective and it gives me rare and random crashes with 3 beeps after restart. I heard this is a known issue.

Anyways if anyone has tried this, would be good to know.

    TIA.

2 accounts on an iphone and macbook

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:31 PM PDT

    Hello guys

I was happily and seamlessly using my iphone and macbook together until my company bought me a brand new macbook but with a new icloud account. now i have my phone with 2 icloud accounts which is the main account is my account and the macbook with the company account.

Now i cannot use the handoff feautures that provides copy&paste between mac and iphone etc. Since my work is social media management, i really need the handoff features. is there a way to use handoff without resetting my phone and have the main icloud account as company account?

I tried to change my main account to the company one without resetting but could not find such a thing.

    thanks in advance

What exactly is the 2-year transition to Apple Silicon?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:21 PM PDT

I know Apple said there will be a two-year transition before Apple Silicon is complete. Do we know or have any idea what this will actually entail? Do they mean that the hardware that comes out at first launch wouldn't fully be what they have in mind, or that it will take two years before all of their Mac products use Apple Silicon?

I guess what I'm mainly asking is, if I were to buy the first release of Apple Silicon computers, what would I be giving up by not waiting two years?

Have you ever experienced Bluetooth headphones not playing the full spectrum of sound when listening to music? Doesn't matter what I'm listening to.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Anytime I connect my V-Moda's via bluetooth it starts off playing music in a weird way, the only way I can think of explaining it is that it's not playing the full spectrum of sound. Then a majority of the time the sound will start playing fine after a few seconds, but occasionally it stays that way. Also when I open up OBS (Streaming Software) the sound switches from full spectrum to not full spectrum sound.

Macbook pro very hot after closing it with an adapter on

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 09:57 AM PDT

Hi. I bought my Macbook Pro about 8 months ago. A few days ago I bought a Philips monitor and an adapter to connect my Macbook to the monitor. In the adapter, I have connected HDMI (to connect to monitor), mouse, keyboard, and charger. When I close my Macbook and the monitor for a few hours and come back, both the Macbook and the adapter are very hot. And sometimes I get an error message that says something like: your MacBook restarted due to an error. Does anyone know why this is the case? Like maybe I have to unplug the adapter once I am done using it for the day or something like that? Thank you for any help.

    Drops of water on speaker

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 03:53 PM PDT

Hi, a couple of drops of water (one was about an inch in diameter) landed on the left speaker of my MacBook (2017, I don't know if the year matters). I dried it off right away. It appears to be working fine at the moment. Is there any way any of it went in and if so, is that life-threatening to the laptop in any way? Should I do anything? Thanks!

    48” curved monitors

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT

Do any of these (LG or Dell) work well with both a 2016 MacBook Pro and a mid level Windows laptop? I have been working with two 27" daisy chained for the Mac. It's not great dragging between the monitors and my Windows is a completely different setup, wasting desk space.

Buying used - seller says fresh OS install resets battery cycle count? Is true?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 02:28 PM PDT

Hi there! I'm buy a used 2014 Macbook Pro with a fresh Catalina install. I asked for the battery cycle count and the seller said "sorry the cycle count was erased with the new OS install". Is this possible? I thought cycle count was stored in battery firmware. Not sure why they would lie, because can't I just fire up the laptop and go see the cycle count myself under Hardware?

Thanks! Sorry for the silly question.

    Favorite Sleeve?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Have a new MacBook coming in the mail and I'm looking at ways to protect it, don't want a hard case or skin (I like the look of the MacBook itself lol) but have been browsing sleeves.

Just wondering if anyone has a favorite? What do you like about it, what do you look for in a sleeve?

I'm currently looking at the tomtoc ones bc the soft interior and hard corners to me seem to be a great duo.

    What do you use?

    MacBook Air and Storage Assistance

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I just purchased a new 2020 Macbook Air a few days ago. I also currently have a 2018 Macbook Air that I use as my daily road warrior. I used the time capsule backup of my older Air to set up my new Macbook. However, although the systems are now identical the free storage capacities are not. My old Air, from which I used the Time Capsule backup, has 177 GB of free space remaining while my brand new Macbook Air has only 64 despite the fact that the two are a mirror of one another. I have iCloud storage enabled for both of them as well so that's not the issue. Could it be that since my new Air is new I just need to let it index the files for a few days until it corrects itself or is there something wrong with it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Idk whats happening with my order

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 07:44 AM PDT

On the 15th August I ordered a MBA 2020 with the i5 upgrade and the free airpods came the next Monday. I was waiting for about a week with the laptop order "processing" until about a week ago where it moved to "shipped". Im fine with it taking a little longer with the upgrades but apple have said its shipped so I've been expecting to come soon. I just checked with DHL to track it and its coming back that apple hasn't even sent it and all they've done is print off the label for a whole week. I'm kinda confused cause I thought shipped means its out of apples hands and now just up to the courier. I start university in a few weeks so hopefully it comes before then but I'm a bit confused with it all.😂😂 Has this happened to anyone else?
