Does anyone actually use the default mail client for Mac OS?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 12:32 PM PDT

I don't really like to way it works on my iPhone but I've been considering using it instead of signing on and off of Google all the time via browser. Should I just leave it alone to avoid dealing with a mess later? Does anyone have any recommended clients to use besides the default?

How do i do an SMC reset successfully on a MacBook with no battery?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 11:43 PM PDT

I picked up an early 15 MacBook 12" today that functions only when plugged into a power source. Battery says only ~265 charge cycles but indicates it needs replacing now. Can i do an SMC reset on this with no battery? The instructions on Apples website says to unplug it before holding the 3 buttons and power button. Problem is there is no power for the logicboard to see the button press combination, so im hoping there is another way to do it plugged in. Im trying to see if resetting it will fix this battery issue before i start throwing parts at it

Whats a cost efficient way to securely backup your mac?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:22 AM PDT

At the moment I backup my macbook via TimeMachine to an external 1tb harddrive. Thats mostly for images, music and other stuff i'd like to keep, but the extra important documents are in a dropbox as well to be safe of things like fire.

I've been getting more and more into photography and the pile of data is growing and it's getting more important for me to not loose them. So obviously the best way would be to install a RAID system with multiple harddrives or buy a lot of cloud storage, but both of these are pretty expensive.

I read that you could tie your (external) hard drives together with a built-in tool in macos to create a RAID1 drive. Does anybody have experience with this and is this really a practicable/convienient way when using a macbook?

Are there other ways of creating a cost efficient but relatively safe backup solution?

Futile attempt to neuter Apple Xcode file association hijacking?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 01:10 AM PDT

xcode is annoying me more and more every day by randomly hijacking file associations every now and then.

I never use xcode for development and I do not want it to force me to open files in it. Apparently that is not a recent issue and others complained about it https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/316880/stop-xcode-from-hijacking-my-file-associations but nobody was able to find a real simple solution, especially one command to run to fix it for good.

Maybe someone did it and want to share it?

    Finder doesn't sync podcasts properly?

    Finder doesn't sync podcasts properly?

Recently got back into podcasts and want to transfer some from my mac to my iPod. Haven't really listened to a podcast in about two years, so I'm still trying to get my head back around it.

The new podcasts app is easy enough, but how do I sync recent episodes to my iPod? In finder, the 'Sync Podcasts' option only displays podcasts that are a year or so old, not the new episodes that I downloaded in the Podcasts app. How do I fix this?

How do you verify that a large copy transfer is not corrupted?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:35 PM PDT

I am moving files from my external hard drive to my Mac's internal storage. But I'm going to transfer 3 folders that are 1 TB each.

It's running right now; but is there a way to verify in the end that the transfer was successful and everything is identical?

I don't want to make any mistakes like I did back in the day where my large transfer somehow got corrupted and I already wiped the previous drive.

Restoring encrypted drive doesn’t restore encryption?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 01:12 PM PDT

I restored an encrypted volume to a new drive via Disk Utility in macOS Recovery, but the new drive isn't encrypted?

I thought this was supposed to a carbon copy. Do you think this was just a glitch? I waited 8 hours for it to restore so I'm not really willing to wait for the next result to arrive.

Blocking certain filetypes from running (or being downloaded in the first place)

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:33 AM PDT

Hi, I'd like to block certain filetypes from executing (or being downloaded). For example, let's say .sh, .py, .tar.gz.

On Windows, this can be managed via SRP (Software Restriction Policies) but I don't believe mac has an equivalent.

Is there any way to achieve this within Mac itself? If not, often antivirus programs will have this functionality, if you could recommend any Mac based ones that does this I'd be greatly appreciative.

I've ensured "App Store only" is selected within Security and Privacy but this does only seems to work with application packages rather than my examples above.

'Quick Note' App. [Hotkey --> popup note entry] Does one exist?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:55 PM PDT

Looking for an app or something that I can just hotkey and have a textbox show up where I can just jot down super quick notes and such.

Kind of like Alfred but instead of a search, it just takes down what I type in.

    Does something like this exist?

Extra safari bar with favorites icons

Extra safari bar with favorites icons

I lost this extra bookmark bar in Safari 13.1.1. It's not the normal favorites bar, but an extra one with icon. Just below the favorites. Anyone who knows how I could activate it again?

General sluggish UI on Apple products

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:12 AM PDT

Am I the only one? I have Apple products, notably for work, and I feel that in general the UI feels heavy. Everything takes some time, be it for the unskippable animations everywhere (which often take a second or so, and are usually synchronous, meaning that you can't operate during the animation, and you also have to wait for the processing time on top of the animation time), and the fact that everything seems lazy loaded, so any click can suddenly "block" stuff for half a second or so, even a simple click on a seemingly fully loaded up window. Some menus take a fraction of a second to display if you click on them, etc.

I know that most people won't notice it, or won't have anything to compare, but if you try for instance Windows on a gamer PC, everything flies. There's absolutely no wait for anything. Animations are short and non-blocking (you can do something else while Windows minimizes a window, unlike the genie effect in macOS which blocks the whole screen for ~2 seconds), every program you open either appears instantly, or instantly shows a window indicating loading.

My Mac doesn't have a problem, it operates just like other Macs at the Apple Store or from my friends. Most other people I ask to don't feel bothered. It feels that my old Mac from 2015 is not slower than my all new one (even though the benchmark show a huge difference). It's even more surprising when you see how the SSD for instance is in the top 1% of the market. There would be no reason to wait for ANYTHING at all, whatever basic stuff you throw at it should take less than 1/60 of a second. Yet it feels sluggish.

Still I'm interested, am I really the only one in the world to feel that way?

    Should Apple redesign MacOS icons?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 02:34 PM PDT

Hello, I'm kind of new to the whole Apple ecosystem and I was wondering, shouldn't Apple redesign its Mac icons, so that everyone would have the same curvy-boxy shape as iPad and iOS? I mean, having been a long time Android user, up until the latest versions of Pixel and most custom UI, it always bothered me how every app had a different one, with no real style cohesion, all different shapes. I mean, it looks a little outdated to me. Why doesn't Apple do the same with their computers, since they always had their characteristic icons shape on mobile devices? It looks miles better than having round, square and objects-like ones mixed together.

External SSD not working after choosing it as Startup disk

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I have an iMac (Retina 4k, 21.5-inch, 2019) 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i3 with 8GB 2400 MHz DDR4. I currently hate the speed of the computer and did not want to give Apple even more money to get a solid-state drive. I did some research and found that using an external SSD would help with speed. I followed all the directions: erasing the drive (SanDisk Extreme 1TB SSD), choosing Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format, choosing GUID Partition Map as the Scheme, and downloading mac OS system onto it. When using my normal internal hard drive it seems to show as a workable external boot SSD. However, when I try to switch it and start running the computer using it, it just goes back to my internal hard drive and I have to disconnect the external drive and reconnect in order for the computer to even recognize the drive. What am I doing wrong? Please help as all I really want in life is for this computer to work even slightly faster.

I've seen on this page that someone used a similar external only difference was that theirs was 2TB & it worked for them! Just let me know if you know anything I can try differently.

I write a lot, which means I Cmd + V a lot of phrases. Is there a way to create keyboard shortcuts/macros for phrases that I Cmd + V often?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 09:18 AM PDT

I write a lot of emails, messages, and posts, with phrases that I copy and paste quite often from Notepad.

This means I have to constantly go back-and-forth from window-to-window which is time-consuming and creates friction in my workflow. To save some time and to create a smoother, more seamless workflow, is it possible to create keyboard shortcuts for phrases that I copy and paste often?

Can I move my iPhone backup to my iCloud Drive then move back to my MacBook when if I want to restore it?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:33 AM PDT

Forgive me because I am new to Mac! I am currently backing up my iPhone which is going to be about 50GB and my MacBook Pro only has 120GB space so I was wondering if I could move the iPhone backup to my iCloud Drive then move back if I ever need to restore from it. I could just keep overwriting the iCloud Drive update whenever I have a newer back up then.

If this is possible, where do I locate the backup that I need to move to the iCloud Drive?

    bash_profile and inputrc ignored

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Hi, I'm running macOS 10.15.4 and I'm starting to believe there's something very wrong with my installation. It looks like ~/.bash_profile is completely ignored in my case. It's never run automatically when I start a new terminal, even though nearly everyone else says it should.

The same problem applies to ~/.inputrc I tried adding set completion-ignore-case on there so tab completion is case insensitive, but it's ignored as well.

Does anyone know what could be wrong? It's a new laptop from 2019, but it seems that either nearly all advices regarding bash_profile and inputrc are outdated on the internet, or there's something really wrong with my installation for some reason?

Handovers from my Apple Watch keep reappearing. Is it a bug ?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 11:57 AM PDT

So earlier on today I had some questions from Siri on my Apple Watch opened a Safari webpage, walked back to my Mac and opened it. But at the left bottom corner the same page pops up over and over even though I have read it and no longer want it to appear. Is it a bug, or is there something that I don't know? (I'm only a Mac user for a week so forgive me if it was a stupid question..)

Catalina update has wiped all my programmed in text replacements.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 04:22 AM PDT

So, I have programmed in a lot of replacement characters (so that I can type logical notation or use IPA characters). It was always kind of glitchy as some replacemetns would just never work, and others would work on only some apps (pages, but not notepad, for instance)

I updated to Catalina yesterday and when I went to type today it didn't work, and when I went to system preferences I found that they'd all been wiped. All that is left is 'omw' to be replaced with 'On my way!'

anyone know how I can fix this?

Music, TV app reset from external to internal drive. Can I stop this?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I upgraded to Catalina a couple of weeks ago and had no problem setting up the TV and Music apps with the external drive I keep my media on.

I don't normally restart my computer, but have had to a couple of times since the upgrade. When I do, both apps automatically reset to their respective locations in my home folder of the internal drive.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Reverted to Mojave after update to Catalina and I can no longer run Safari.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:50 AM PDT

I rolled my Macbook Pro 2012 back to Mojave from my time machine backup after updating to Catalina because I had some legacy 32bit apps that Catalina doesn't run.

Now the version of Safari installed won't open and says it requires 10.15, how do I get a version of Safari that works with 10.14??

Apple iMac (2011?) progress bar only loads half way before it reboots itself. HELP please!

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:24 AM PDT

I've tried all the keyboard commands I've found online to access recovery mode, etc..

The only command/screen i can access is the kernel panic one.

Am i able to download macosx on a USB flash drive and plug it in the mac to reinstall the OSX, even though the mac is stuck rebooting? Or maybe that's not the issue? I'd appreciate any advice.
