Accidently connected iPad Pro to external screen while using Blink SSH

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 05:09 AM PDT

Getting my new iPad Pro today... question, for those who didn't go for the magic keyboard, why and what did you get instead?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:40 PM PDT

I'm not sure if I should even get one. Isn't the mac's keyboard and mouse enough? although I'm worreied about switching the keyboard and mouse between devices...

I'm planning on using the pencil more than a keyboard, although a keyboard would be useful sometimes. Is the smart keyboard enough? Did anyone that uses the pencil more go for this route?

    Thanks for your attention. :)

Received and applied the Paperlike (2) for iPad Pro 12 and think it is great... am I a shill now?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 12:57 PM PDT

And if so, when do I get my cheque?

I bought it because after spending weeks watching iPad Pro videos (before I bought one) it was hard to avoid the subliminal messaging half of them had about the Paperlike. Conscious that most of them were sponsored and the fact that this sub had the often typical reaction to that I decided to go for it anyway on the grounds I wanted a matt screen protector and this was best reviewed one I could find.

Only been a few days but I love it. Feels better to write on and hasn't affected the screen in any serious way for me. I'm a lawyer so constantly scribbling notes and marking up documents and this is a god send for that. Maybe if I worked with photos and videos I would feel differently.

Just thought I would share my thoughts as I read about 20 threads while I was waiting for it to arrive (took ages btw) that kept saying how shit it is.

Anyway, shill shill shill. Money please.

You can pinch and zoom to enlarge PiP view

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 07:24 AM PDT

Picture in picture view can not only be moved around the screen but "pinch and zoom" gesture will make the pip box larger

Just found this out and I've been using pip for years

iPad Pro 12.9 as second monitor - EasyCanvas resolution is perfect, but Duet Display has poor resolution?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:50 PM PDT

I've been using a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 as a second monitor (PC) for a couple of weeks now, and regardless of the Duet settings I use (everything set to highest quality / most power use), the resolution looks noticeably downgraded. I'm primarily doing photo/video editing, and you can see color banding in various areas as if the screen had low color bit depth and the resolution itself looks like its about 720p at best.

EasyCanvas on the other hand displays the resolution & color perfectly, but it isn't really a second monitor app per say and will crash after about an hour of straight use as well.

Duet support hasn't replied after tweeting them, so I'm wondering if there a solution to this or an alternate app?

Screen recording on iPad Pro 2020

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:26 PM PDT

The device supports 120fps. I was wondering does screen recording record the videos in 60 or 120fps? If only 60, is there anyways to enable 120?

Three-week impression iPad Pro 12.9 2020 (I was torn on size)

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 07:25 AM PDT

After going back and forth for a while, you guys helped me decide on the 12.9" over the 11". I'll be discussing size mostly and some things I hadn't anticipated or read about. Let me know if this should be in the "what do I buy?" thread.

tl;dr: pros and cons based primarily on size.

    Positives:

    1. The screen dimensions are amazing for drawing and photo-editing. I'm an art teacher, photographer and designer. My main computer is a 13" MBP hooked up to a monitor. And I will still use that for most things including heavy editing, sorting libraries and writing. I often have several programs open for my workflow and dont see iPad becoming my primary.
    2. The screen is big enough to feel like I have a little tv in any room. I dont feel like i need to be close to it like i did on my iPad 2. Also, the sound is impressive for such a thin device.
    3. The onscreen keyboard is large and adequate. In order to stay light, I don't have a keyboard case. The large-ish onscreen keyboard is good enough for light typing tasks. I found the smaller onscreen keyboard too awkward to use very often. I'm getting used to the onscreen keyboard if I need to send out a quick email.
    4. I've been using split screen apps and it's nice to have that much real estate for that. I'm still getting used to the gestures.
    5. The 12.9" still seems plenty portable. I haven't really ventured out, for obvious reasons. However, it's similar in size to my mbp but lighter. I think it'll be fine on a plane/train. I saw a bunch of reviews saying it felt to big too use on the go, but I don't see that.
    6. With both drawing and goodnotes, being able to rest my wrist while not occupying too much screen is really nice. As long as I can set it down, the apple pencil and this machine are heavenly together.

    Negatives:

    1. Thumb typing while hand holding it is is a nearly impossible and I have big hands. I really need to set it down to type anything. This is super annoying when I want to reply to a text or type something quickly in a browser. This wasn't a problem on my old smaller iPad. I just learned that it doesn't support split keyboard (unless you guys know something I don't). This is possibly the biggest annoyance I didn't anticipate.
    2. It's friggin big. It's a joy to work on a desk with it but handholding it to read is inconvenient. Reading books in bed in landscape is fine. Holding it in portrait mode is not great for reading for extended periods, unless you have something to lean it on. With smaller bezels, I tend to thumb pinch closer to the edge than my older model. It can get tiring. I wasn't expecting that.
    3. The center of gravity is far in, unlike the smaller model. It's hard to get your fingers there for balance. On my old smaller ipad, my fingers rested under the center with my thumb holding the side. It felt much more balanced. You really need to reach hard to do this on the 12.9". It doesn't feel natural to do so. For this reason, it often feels heavier than it is. I'm 6'1 with large-ish hands.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and have no plans to trade it in. Creative work is the main reason I went for this size. However, I wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants to do a lot of handholding with it and text based work with it. As for watching tv, browsing, and hobby drawing, the 11" would be more than enough. I hope this was helpful.

Edit: Typos. Also, without a case. It's much more comfortable for handholding but I rarely do that.

Looking for a Charging Dock for the 2020 iPad Pro 11“

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT

Title says it all - I'm looking for a nice charging dock for the 2020 iPad Pro 11". I intend to place it in my living room and not only use the iPad to save my collection of CDs on it, but also to use it for browsing etc. Couldn't find anything so far except the Magic Keyboard with its USB-C port on the side (which is a little expensive for what I'm going to use it) - so if you know a dock that is working as seamless as the Magic Keyboard is.. 👇🏻

Apple Music Web Player on iPad

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I got the new 2020 iPad Pro 12.9" today and am loving it so far. However, on my previous iPad (a 9.7" iPad Pro), I managed to open the Apple Music web player without safari taking me straight to the Apple Music app. I find the web player a much better use of the iPads larger screen space, rather than than just being a blown up iPhone version like the app. Any idea on how I can get the web player to open? Ive tried deleting the Apple Music app, but that didn't work

Can the latest iPad Air charge with a standard iPhone 5W adapter?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I'm have an electrician wall mount my iPad Air, and they are going to use the light switch to create another plug behind the iPad wall bracket but I wasn't sure if this was possible to do if the iPad needed higher power.

What is your favorite calculator app for the iPad?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 05:40 AM PDT

My iPad didn't ship with a calculator app (and as far as I know, no iPad has a calculator app like the iPhone), so I want to get an app to use (free or paid, as long as I can remove all the ads I don't care paying for it).

I tried a couple of different apps but they always lacked something, some times they didn't have a good design, some times they requested strange permissions, or they didn't have a ad-free option

Best mic for creating videos via screen recording?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 08:16 AM PDT

I intend on making educational YouTube videos using the screen recording feature, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good mic for this purpose?

I currently have the Rode SmartLav+ lavalier mic ( I plug it into the iPad with an adapter) but it picks up a lot of background noise and isn't all too clear.

The AirPods Pro mic is also kinda terrible when screen recording for some reason..
