Brute force attacks on Mac Mini 2012 under Mojave Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:39 AM PDT Since a week or two, my mac mini (its an office computer, not personal) is being constantly brute force attacked (via ssh and vnc/screensharing). The administrators are giving just about 0 sh*ts. Im almost sure, that the installation is old and somewhere on the hdd there is a malware. Why you might ask ? Well, because i have only one IP address from my provider (no routers, just modem and direct cable from it to the computer) and under Windows, there are 0 attacks or what so ever...0 traces in the event viewer. Any advice on anti-malware or similar apps i could eventually try, so i could perform a scan? Firewall is off, but i can't turn it on, since im on a "standard" account. Im almost on the edge of my nerves and patience to try and make anything on that mini just to get an "admin account". I have also options to get an router and use a firewall on it to block every single IP, but i don't want to give extra cash on a office computer, which the admins have 0 interest. My other option is to call my ISP and request for a new IP, but again...extra cash for no reasons. Any comments and advices are welcome, thanks! [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro Space Suddenly Disappeared Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:38 AM PDT Hi everyone. I have a 15" MBP 2019 model and overnight my 120GB of space disappeared into "other." I ran DaisyDisk and it shows that within "others," users was using quite a bit for photos and libraries. I used the option-control function to repair photos and that helped open up 50+ GB. Photolibraryd and cloudphotod seem to be running using up lots of CPU as well. My other is now still stuck at 55GB. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix this? My guess is that based on what DaisyDisk is telling me (and the processes running in the background) is that my Mac is trying to download all my iCloud stuff in full size onto my HD. I'd appreciate any help with this [link] [comments]
[Catalina] Disk Utility: Create another container disk? Pros and Cons? Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:04 AM PDT Hello, I've been dabbling with some coding and I've been installing various packages using pip, conda, and git. I find myself forgetting what I downloaded and I would like to create another container disk just for doing this kind of stuff. I think it will be much nicer just to set a second container for my programming related stuff which I can simply just erase using the Disk Utility. I also tried to create a new volume but I don't know if it will work since it's under one container. I don't know it's OCD but I tend to reset my Mac to computer setting because of this reason. Not all packages get removed, etc. Is there a way I can uninstall everything I downloaded using terminal? Like all the install commands? What's your recommendation? Thank you! [link] [comments]
How to hide the outline on macOS Dock Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:35 AM PDT The thin outline on the dock is really pissing me off, tried solutions online for deleting the resource file in Dock-app but apparently Mojave has restricted the users from modifying the system files. Even tried changing permissions using the terminal 😕 any Unix pro out there? [link] [comments]

The GitHub repository is https://github.com/wigging/swift-macos and the website is https://gavinw.me/swift-macos/. I plan to add more examples soon. Hopefully this will become a useful resource for people wanting to build native Mac apps. [link] [comments]
Disable .gifs on Safari 12.2.2? Deanimator extension? Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:09 AM PDT Trying to find out how to disable autoplay of .gifs on Safari, or even disable them altogether. To date, the few places I visit that feature .gifs allow them to be disabled through the website settings so it hasn't been an issue, but just now I encountered one on Wikipedia with no apparent way to disable it short of signing into for a Wikipedia account, which I don't wish to do - or at least I don't want to have to be signed into it at all times on the off chance I may get sprung with an animation. I found reference to an extension called deanimator, but it seems this is quite old and the repository no longer maintained. It would be good to hear from anyone who has used that extension recently. It would be even better to hear from anyone who has found other working solutions. EDIT: version in title should be "12.1.2" [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:22 PM PDT I find it really strange that macOS doesn't have an application uninstaller akin to .msi/.exe that performs the uninstall on Windows. I use AppCleaner to remove unwanted apps, which seems to do a good job but why is this necessary? What does Move to Bin on a .app file do compared to AppCleaner? Admitteddly, I'm a little embarrassed in regards to my lack of understanding of how applications know which files need to be uninstalled. I believe the installer keeps a log of each file that gets created, but I'm not completely sure, so if anyone who could clarify that would be awesome! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:59 PM PDT Hi, I often work with pdfs. Some of these pdfs lack the text information, and need ocr. Some have corrupt text information. Some get corrupt text information when I use Ghostscript to try to process them for my Kindle. (Owing to coordination and sensory disabilities, I haven't been able to use iPads, other tablets, or any touch devices.) An easy way to identify pdfs with these issues would help, rather than opening them and searching them and not finding anything when I need to. Or searching a folder and not finding the right files if they have corrupt text. I've tried running a word count, and depending on the type of corrupting I can get reasonable-looking results from completely garbled text. e.g. in the Terminal, ps2ascii example.pdf | wc -w But since most of my pdfs are in English, if I could search for all pdf files which do not contain "the," I'd have a good idea where to look for corrupted pdfs. I don't know if there are any tools to search for files which do not contain a given term, and may not contain any terms. [link] [comments]
MacOS to Windows: Bootcamp, Virtual Box...???? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:23 PM PDT Hi! I am looking to run Windows on my MacBook Pro (2012) that currently has the Catalina update. I really hate that I have to do this but I am becoming a tutor on tutor.com and they require the ability to use Windows. :( Anyway I tried using bootcamp 4 times and each time I get an error message telling me "No bootable drive" error. The bootcamp program only gives me the option to use a USB as a drive. I was getting really frustrated and I tried using the Virtual box emulator instead of bootcamp. it was all going well until I literally tried to open Windows and again I got the "No Bootable Drive" error but this time I didn't even have the USB involved. I am asking if anyone has any advice at all. At this point I am ok with paying for a emulator but I would really like to be sure it will work on the computer before I buy one. Also: this is my old computer and I have a new Mac that I use so I would only be using this one for tutoring. In fact I erased the whole thing just to have the program I need on here. Im not sure if that helps anything at all! I would appreciate any advice at all!!!! I am using the 64 bit windows. I had downloaded it onto my new computer and used a USB to put it on this computer to save time because its a little slow on the downloads. Please help, I'm a broke college student and need to get working asap!! [link] [comments]
Updated to macOS Catalina v10.15.4 and my dictionary no longer works? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:06 PM PDT Hi guys, I recently updated my MacBook to Catalina, however, my dictionary has disappeared. When I open the dictionary app and search for words, it only displays Wikipedia search results. I can no longer search for the definition or synonyms of a particular word. I have attempted to fix this by going to Dictionary>Preferences, however the only reference source it lists is Wikipedia, which has already been selected. There is no sign of an Oxford dictionary etc. that I have seen other answers suggest. Any help would be greatly appreciated to remedy this situation! [link] [comments]

Catalina: how to reset Finder window size/position to default Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:06 PM PDT Maybe it's just my OCD but I love the default MacOS window position/sizes. Is there a way to reset my Finder window to its default size/position? I know that deleting .plist files works for several apps (Mail, Music), but it doesn't seem to work for Finder. Any help is greatly appreciated! :) [link] [comments]
Windows management....A better better snap tool. Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT I love A Better Snap Tool. It does a wonderful job of auto sizing windows to my presets. However, after using Windows, I want more. Specifically, does an app exist that will allow me to click between two open windows that are side-by-side, and change each of their sizes together (ie one gets larger and one smaller)? Also, is there a way when I snap a window to one side of the screen, for the app to show all other currently apps, and I be able to select the one I want to appear in the other half of the screen.? Question about my Mac mini and DosDudes patch for Catalina... Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:59 PM PDT I have a late 2010 Mac Mini with an SSD and 8GB of ram and most likely going to upgrade it to 16GB of ram in the near future but I'm wondering if I upgrade to Catalina on this late 2010 Mac mini will it but suck at that one version of Catalina from the patcher or will I be getting future updates? How will it run on an older Mac? I've already checked that my model is compatible with his patcher. what are your thoughts and if I should do it or not. I do like macOS HSierra, its really nice but I really want that dark mode to be honest. [link] [comments]
USB mounting read-only in Catalina Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:47 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2019 running Catalina 10.15.4. I have a 2TB SanDisk and a 512GB PNY USB disk, neither of which mount read-write by default. At first I thought they were dead so I tried them in my Linux laptop and they mount up just fine. I had to manually go to the command line and mount them read/write and they still don't work from the Finder. Currently they are formatted ExFAT because I couldn't get them to work at all using Mac formats. What is going on? [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:30 AM PDT Hello everyone! I've had my MacBook working a bit weirdly for some time now and I'm really bad with computers. Maybe someone here can suggest some fixes. The issues I'm having are: - the CAPS button sometimes stays on and cannot be unactivated. I thought I'd fixed this by disenabling it from the settings tab. It did help, but sometimes (especially now, when the laptop is in full-fledged fit mode) it just overwrites the setting - this CAPS issue is correlated to some other issue the SHIFT button is having, I think. Any text I write or click on becomes automatically selected and I can use only uppercase characters. - when this happens, if I try to click on something in Safari, the Safari icon appears as if I were downloading something. I can't click on anything in Safari. Clicking on folders or other stuff still works. - sometimes the interface looks odd, the color scheme becomes greyish, black or more pixelated (now the bottom bar is all black and my Messages conversation window theme as well) - closing the cap seems to alleviate the issue, but it does come back regardless if I move it or not I've tried to use an external keyboard and mouse, but the issues persist. I have spilt some water on the laptop in the past, and quickly cleansed it with air spray. In the past few months it's worked perfectly though. Especially now, after still having the same issues with the external keyboard and mouse, I really don't know whether I should treat this as damage from water or other external factors or if I should try anything else. Any help will be appreciated. I have online classes daily and losing my laptop now would be catastrophic. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]
