Logitech Combo Touch arrived! Pics, weight, initial impressions (2017 10.5" iPad Pro)

Logitech Combo Touch arrived! Pics, weight, initial impressions (2017 10.5" iPad Pro)

My Smart Keyboard kicked the bucket at the end of last year, and while I pondered my replacement options, 13.4 was released and the Combo Touch revealed. I waited it out until yesterday, ordered from Apple with expedited shipping, and it showed up this morning! Pretty impressive, given the general state of shipping right now.

2017 iPad Pro 10.5 next to Logitech Combo Touch box

I had been using the Smart Keyboard with a rear shell from Khomo - this combination, with the iPad, weighed in at 28.9oz (or about 820g):

Weighing my old set up of 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 + Smart Keyboard + Khomo Shell

The Combo Touch is definitely heftier! The iPad + Combo Touch weighs about 40.1oz (or 1138g). So a roughly 35% increase, which is definitely noticeable.

Weighing the new setup: 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 + Logitech Combo Touch

The weight of the Combo Touch is split pretty evenly between the two pieces. The Keyboard is 11.1oz (315g), and the rear case/stand is 12.4oz (352g).

The variable viewing angle was another aspect of this case that appealed to me over the Smart Keyboard. The pics below show the minimum and maximum angles of the case, and the hinge has resistance, so it can manage every angle in between. How this hinge holds up over time will be very important to me - hopefully it is well engineered!

Logitech Combo Touch minimum viewing angle

Logitech Combo Touch maximum viewing angle

Speaking of hinges, the hinge on the Keyboard that holds the magnets and Smart Connector is quite stiff out of the box. Due to this, as well as the weight, the Keyboard usually falls away from the iPad when I pick up the iPad off the table. We'll see if this gets better over time as that hinge breaks in, or if it remains a slight nuisance. Also, when using it Tablet mode, it means that your only option is to remove the keyboard - it does not fold behind the back. However, I'm hopeful that this decreased folding angle means that it will last longer - that's my guess as to where my Smart Keyboard died.

The typing and trackpad experience seem good so far. The key feel is much closer to a laptop than the Smart Keyboard, which I think I will like. The trackpad isn't huge, but what can you expect at this size?

Overall, I think this case is a good choice for those who mostly use their iPad in "laptop" mode on a desk - the added weight and bulk will be noticeable if you carry it around a lot, or use it as a handheld device. However, if I think it will be a great choice if you are looking to give your iPad as much laptop functionality as possible.

Edit: Adding a couple more pictures. First, we have the frontal view. One thing to note is that with this design, it takes up quite a bit more depth on your table than the Smart Keyboard - you have extra space in the front for the trackpad, and depending on the angle of your screen, the rear kickstand can extend out a fair bit.

    Frontal view

And here is a width comparison. By my measurement, the Combo Touch is close to 1/4" thicker than the Smart Keyboard + Khomo shell. Each jewel case is about 3/16" thick, and the Combo Touch is a little taller than 4, the Smart Keyboard + Khomo a little shorter than 3.

Combo Touch thickness - a little over 3/4\" thick

Magic Keyboard + Khomo - right around 1/2\" thick

    FYI Scrolling fixed in 13.4.5

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 12:55 PM PDT

I saw some posts where people were saying Apple broke scrolling on purpose to make people buy Magic Trackpad 2 or Magic Mouse 2.... (on regular mice)

Well, scrolling works just fine again in 13.4.5 (Beta).

EDIT: Seems like the mouse acceleration is nice as well now!

    Refurb 2018 iPad Pro 11 64gb

Apple refurb site has been out of these for about a week. Am I wasting my time waiting for them to come back in stock? Or is there still a chance in the near future?

I don't have much experience watching the Apple refurb site so I'm at a bit of a loss. Can anyone offer an insight that has a little more experience and knowledge?

    iPad + iPhone functionality?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 07:30 AM PDT

I've had my iPad 5 for the last 2.5 years and I've been extremely satisfied with it. I've never had an iPhone though - too much money, for most people living in my country anyway - so iPad is my first and only Apple device. But with the recently announced new iPhone SE, I'm considering it since it has a price I can actually pay without selling a kidney... and that A13 looks great.

So, to all of you who own both an iPad and an iPhone, what would I gain on iPad by introducing an iPhone?

Looking for a note taking app like notability that uses Pencilkit UI

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:47 AM PDT

Does anyone know if there's an app like notability that uses the apple pencilkit UI? I really like the ruler and pencil feature for writing. However most of the apps I've seen that use it aren't able to open and annotate pictures/pdfs like notability can. Penbook is probably the closest to what I'm looking for, but as far as I can tell can't open PDFs or images.

Anyone else here sticker bomb instead of using a case?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:54 PM PDT

A Windows and Android user, just got gifted an Ipad(7th Generation) and clueless about Apple ecosystem. What exactly can I use it for? Rather, what do you use it for?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:51 PM PDT

Is this a dumb question? Sounds like a dumb question, doesn't it.

Just got the iPad. No keyboard, no Pencil.

I can't take advantage of the Note taking apps because I don't have a Pencil and I can't buy one right now because of lockdowns in my city. I take online courses, and looking into new and better ways of taking notes. iPad + Pencil + 1 or 2 Apps like Notability, I think, are often recommended, but not quite worth it for me right now because no Pencil.

I can't take advantage of learning to draw digitally, I guess, because no Pencil.

My content consumption is satisfied thanks to my Windows laptop and Android Phone. I have a Kindle for my books.

Have never really used an Apple product to understand how this could benefit me either.

I just don't know what else I could really use it for. Would hate for it to go to waste since it's a nice and expensive gift. And once I buy the Pencil I could have more use for specific purposes maybe.

What exactly do you all use it for? Maybe a variety of responses from you, especially those who were more used to the Windows and Android ecosystems, could help me out?

[P.S - I will be moving to a different country in a few months. So unsure if I should be spending any/much money on any apps or not till then to avoid the whole issue of having those apps transferred or not or whatever]

Do you use any extra accessories that helps with taking notes?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I just ordered the 2018 12.9 and I'll be getting the pencil. I was wondering how you guys take notes? I imagine that placing it flat on a desk will take its toll over time. I've taken a look at different cases, like the ztotop case, but I wonder whether it's adjustable enough and stable enough to write in a comfortable position and not having the ipad slide or collapse.

I've seen the elevation labs draft table, but it's quite pricey, so I'd like to know if there are cheaper alternatives or if it's worth the price, or what else helps you taking notes.

    Portrait Style Multitasking (iPadOS)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 09:04 PM PDT

Having two windows/apps on at the same time in portrait mode feels like a waste of screen right now, without the feature to split horizontally with a top and bottom window.

I had two video windows on earlier in landscape, and they were small because they were split. It would be nice if you could simply rotate the iPad into portrait to look at two videos with maximum screen space used.

This is a use case that could apply to many other instances as well I'm sure!

Let me know what you think.

Thoughts on pointer integration on iPadOS

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Today I decided to bring home a wireless keyboard and mouse from work to really see how well these types of peripherals are integrated into the latest version of iPadOS.

So far, especially after browsing around my file server in the Files app, pointer integration has been really solid. Hell, even right clicking on files works and for the longest time Apple refused to have normal right clicking on their computers. Browsing around the OS as a whole has been really fluid and well thought out. I wouldn't go as far as refined because it does take some getting used to. I'm definitely not a fan of the inability to invert the scrolling direction.

For now it's really up to developers to integrate this into their apps. Microsoft Remote Desktop, LogMeIn, and VNC could be amazing apps if they took any advantage of a true pointing device and if they did a better job at integrating a hardware keyboard. Maybe the keyboard limitation is an underlying limitation of iPadOS itself. Also want to note for the 0.001% of people out there who might care about this, Minecraft Pocket Edition/Bedrock does not work at all with these types of accessories despite having configurable settings for them.

At this point, I don't think I'm ready for my iPad to be so similar to a normal laptop. But really thats just me. I am interested in getting the Smart Keyboard for the times that I do decide to type out longer documents but I don't think I would be interested in Logitech's new Combo Touch. I'm not really looking for a pointing device thats always ready for me to use and I really don't want a kickstand. The Smart Cover has been perfect for me and the idea of being able to tuck away the keyboard without removing it all while still using it to prop it up. Ultimately I will probably invest in Apple's Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro 10.5".

If you're interested in a product like this, which one are you interested in and why?

Special characters with a Smart Keyboard Folio Pro on iPad Pro 4th gen

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 03:55 AM PDT

    Hey,

my iPad language is set to german, though my keyboard (software) is US as is my Smart Keyboard Folio pro. I learned that for whatever reason Apple doesn't use the nice long press option for external keyboards on iPad (or is it optional somehow) but only allows alt+key to type special characters. I wonder how the language for the alternate key is selected

Instead of german umltauts I seem to get norwegian ones. Pressing Alt/option+o results in an ø instead of an ö - as I already said my main language is set to german, I also already had a second, german soft keyboard active which I basically don't want. In soft keyboard mode things work just fine, only with the folio attached things seem to go wrong.

Any hints on how to fix that?

    Cheers,

    Helmi74
