Who else can’t wait for the Magic keyboard?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Love my iPad Pro and love using it with the Smart Keyboard but since Apple announced the Magic keyboard and all the things it promises to do, i can't stop thinking about it. My current Smart Keyboard just feels inadequate— I hate how the screen shakes on my lap when I type and every time I have to reach out to touch the screen because of the lack of a trackpad, I die a little inside! So was wondering, what are the chances of apple releasing it earlier? And if we had to wait till May, are there maybe any sources with more info on this keyboard?

Let’s talk about the state of iPad apps

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:35 AM PDT

Background So I've been daily driving an iPad Air 3 with the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard for about a year now. I started studying at a Faculty of Law in October, so my usage has changed a bit since then, but mostly I've been using it for taking notes, browsing the web, watching different sorts of enterntainment, social media, and of course the standard Office/iWork apps like Word/Pages and PowerPoint/Keynote.

Since the iPadOS 13.4 update, I've also been using the Microsoft Wedge Touch mouse I've had collecting dust in a drawer, and based on all of the experience, I'd like to present my views on the state of iPad apps and start a discussion on that topic.

    Word/Pages and Zoom

As a student, I naturally had to write several papers/memorandums, so I tried typing them in Pages. A certain memorandum I had to write required us to use 1,15 spacing between the lines. I was disappointed quickly, when I found out that the Pages app only has a few preset options for line spacing, and 1,15 was not one of them, so I switched over to Word. However, I just couldn't continue on working there, since the UI there seems to be so cluttered, attempting to be minimalist and offering full functionality at the same time. I also don't know if this is some setting or a bug, but the icons for different actions just kept changing while I was typing any Word document, not the particular paper I mentioned at the beginning.

Now with mouse support, I thought life would get easier, but sadly at least for me, the controls in the top bar in the Word app simply do not recognise mouse input consistently for me. It works normally on literally every other application, so my guess is that MS has even more work to do than it seemed to me in the first place.

Not to mention the utter disappointment when I realized iPadOS 13 brought support for several app instances for nothing. People have been asking MS to update Word to support this for months and they still haven't delivered. I am just shocked that such a massive company is incompetent to update their apps that people rely on when a big update such as iPadOS 13 allows them to be more productive.

At the same time, I believe that the iPad is ready to get full version of Office apps with normal UI that would be found on a desktop version of the apps, especially now that mouse support is a real thing.

Now with the Covid-19 situation, we've been forced to use Zoom for our lectures. The iPad app is almost okay, although some UI changes here would also be welcome, but my main complaint is the lack of Picture-in-picture mode, as you can't even use Zoom next to another app at the same time.

*Social network, Reddit, the Web *

For social media, I mostly use the usual suspects, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. The only app that delivered a good-enough experience for me was Messenger, since I prefered the UI and consistent behaviour of Facebook website over the app, not to mention my another disappointment, that in this day and age we do not have a functional Instagram app for iPad.

I would totally not be mad if they at least offered us a reasonable explanation, why the web version of Instagram doesn't support Instagram Direct, but since that is not the case, I am again utterly disappointed that arguably the most popular social networking platform has an app for Godforsaken Windows Store, but not for the iPad.

And now I the second most painful realizations I came to while using the iPad. I really like Apollo for reddit on my iPhone, but the app simply does not utilize the screen real estate that the iPad offers and it has quite a few bugs (out of bound search bar, spacebar not working while searching in a subreddit etc.), so I went looking for an app, that would offer a better reddit experience. I tried the official reddit app, Comet, Baconreader and Slide, however, none of them really sparked joy for me while using them so ultimately I came back to Apollo. What I wanted to say is, that it's concerning that noone even seems to be trying to bring a good reddit experience for the iPad in the same perfectionist way many try doing so for the iPhone.

Now for browsing the web, I am using Safari since it provides the best experience for me and I try to stay away from Chrome. I like the experience on the new Safari very much, I love the new download manager, however, I still think that a "save as" dialog similar to the one that can be used when you click on the share icon while reading a PDF in Safari where you can actually rename the document when saving it would be a God sent. Yeah sure, I can just do it this way, but I'd rather not lose too much time. Other than that I have no major complaints for Safari whatsoever.

    Conclusion

While there are many creativity-focused high quality apps, such as LumaFusion, Affinity suite and Procreate, I beleive that we have a deficit of more "mundane" apps that larger user-base actually uses on dialy basis and would allow more people to be more productive and enjoy using our iPads for just doing "mundane" tasks. The pro apps available and Adobe enhancing their app experience are clear signs that software and hardware are now ready to provide us with a more complete, more desktop-like experience on our devices if only developers would utilize the power that iPad and iPadOS offer.

iPad Pro (2017) for $250 or regular iPad (2019) for $300 for gaming card games. Which is the better one for me?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 03:11 PM PDT

I will mostly buy it to play a certain card game (Legends of Runeterra). My last iPad was the 2nd generation which is very dated now. I think neither have USB-C unfortunately.

A hacky trick to scroll with mouse until Apple fixes mouse scrolling

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 11:07 AM PDT

Since it seems most people using mice are having a terrible experience with scrolling, myself included, I delved into some of iPadOS's AssistiveTouch settings and found that there are commands for "Scroll Up" and "Scroll Down" that you can assign to buttons on your mouse! It's actually... not that bad.

Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize actual scrolling up or down using the wheel as a button press, so I assigned them to the side buttons on my mouse that normally would be Back/Forward (since those aren't programmed to work anyway). It's far from a perfect solution, not very obvious (I really kinda hate the way settings are laid out on iPad), but it's a bit of a band-aid until something better comes along.

Will there be a Logitech keyboard case for the iPad Pro 11'' 2020 in the near future?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I got my new iPad today and thought about buying a keyboard case for it. By a friends suggestion, I looked for the new ones from Logitech. But as it turns out, they're only available for the iPad Pro 12.9'' 2020. The only other option I found was the new one from Brydge, but as it turns your iPad in a laptop, it doesn't fit my needs, since I want to use it as a normal tablet too.
There is, of course, the cases directly from Apple, but I think they're way too expensive, so I won't buy one.

So, do you guys think Logitech will release their new case for the 11'' 2020 version in the near future?

    iPad Lifespan

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:19 AM PDT

How would you describe the lifespan of your iPad? I have a iPad Pro 10.5" (2017) that I bought new barely a year ago, and it just died a couple days ago, being few weeks out of warranty. Now I am contemplating whether I should get a new one.

Help me make my iPad more useful to me

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:08 AM PDT

I've had an iPad 9.7" (2017, I believe) for the past year and have mostly been using it as a YouTube machine. This thing has a lot of guts to it and I know it can do so much more, but I find I'm either overwhelmed or don't know where to begin as far as finding the most organized, productive, and unique apps to take advantage of this thing.

To info: I'd like to use this for writing, note taking, personal organization, email, music production, reading, Reddit, browsing...

I have an apple pencil and a small Bluetooth keyboard.

I also have a Windows PC and Android phone, which I think has made it difficult to find ways to coordinate myself between the three ecosystems...

I don't know... I'm looking for any kind of blanket suggestions. Apps you recommend, ways of organizing your home screen or general work flow, tips and tricks. Anything you could suggest to help me make this more than a really expensive YouTube device.

    Thanks in advance.

Is screencasting possible on the ipad?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I have an interview where I need to submit a 5 minute tutorial video, I've found a lot of apps that can record my screen and audio but nothing that can also put a small video window with the camera on somewhere.

Is this even possible with iOS?

(Sorta like a stream I guess, but no actual streaming involved)

Are Any of You Using Firefox as Your Main Browser on the iPad?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I have gotten a little frustrated with Safari on the Mac with pages that don't seem to render properly (all props to Apple, I think this is due to their high standards for privacy … but I've hit some useful pages that just don't work). Firefox released a version for the Mac that got a lot faster last summer, and I've been toying with making the transition to Firefox on the Mac. However my experience is that Firefox on iOS is hard to use. It takes me about five taps to do something that in Safari would take me two. I don't want to make a transition if I can't get a single browser to work well on all my devices.

Do any of you use Firefox as your primary browser on iOS? Are you happy with it? Does it just take a little getting used to?

Anyone know of a capacitive stylus that magnetically attaches to an iPad Pro?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:58 AM PDT

I know this is a niche request but has anyone come across a capacitive stylus that magnetically attaches to an iPad Pro? I'm wanting a stylus to take with me and like the convenience of the magnetic attachment of the Apple Pencil. I don't write or draw and have a tough time justifying spending the money for the AP when it won't work on other touchscreen devices.

Has anyone had any luck with used Apple Pencils?

What is the best motion graphics app for iPad?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:48 AM PDT

I don't mind paying a bit more for an app if I know it's going to be good, hence why I use LumaFusion. I'm wondering if there's a similar motion graphics app that would enable me to produce high quality graphics for videos. I looked at Core Animator but it hasn't received any updates in about 2 years so I'm not sure it'll be that good. Any help is appreciated.

    Secure Storage Options?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 04:27 AM PDT

Hi All, I've finally fully made the switch from Microsoft to Apple ditching my dell and surface in favour of MacBook Pro and a new IPad Pro.

The only thing I am missing is bitlocker as I could encrypt a USB stick and use this to transfer files (client data in this case) between the laptop and surface. I could then use a bitlocker partition to securely store data on the surface with a password.

I appreciate the iPad is encrypted itself but doesn't allow reading of encrypted drives. I would like another level of security, are any of the "locker" apps worthwhile? I'd like to store the data offline only and an additional password is sufficient security

Not necessarily urgent now as I'm obviously not travelling for work 🙄

    Fix Picture in Picture Mode

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 10:19 PM PDT

With basically all students moving to online teaching, has anyone else had to multi task on their iPad with videos playing? For some context, I will have a video lecture up and put it into picture in picture mode and have the video playing on top of my GoodNotes app. Sometimes while writing, I need to go back due to the teacher going a bit quick or I need to clarify something. I can't do that in picture in picture mode, I have to drag the app to the side and multitask then change the time. Especially on the iPad Pro 12.9, I don't see why they couldn't have added this. I imagine this is an iPad OS thing due to it happening in all apps. Any help or comments are appreciated in advance.

    External mic

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 04:47 PM PDT

I'm buying a 2020 iPad Pro (the latest edition) and I want to hook up my Samson G-Track Pro external microphone to my iPad (for recording) I know I can't simply use a USB-A to USB-C dongle, but I'm looking at what all I'd need to make this work. I've seen people use blue yeti microphones externally and I would imagine I could use mine too?

    Thank you guys!
