Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend? - April 20, 2020

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Any Non-PvP building kingdom building games?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:22 PM PDT

I'm looking for a kingdom building game. That does not have a pvp raiding system. Something like clash of clans or similar or a game with building involved but no pvp.

I never have a lot of time to play games so when I come back to a game and all my progress is raided it really annoys me. I wouldn't mind if it has some type of arena mode though.

Maybe something where you go out and raid dungeons or fight monsters and then level up your kingdom?

    Anything out there like this?

    I don't mind a premium game.

There is a rather large Apple Arcade discord server with a ton of the developers for Apple Arcade games, for anyone interested. It's pretty active and nice for those looking to discuss and discover games on the service.

Game design mechanics for simple mobile game

Game design mechanics for simple mobile game

Hello everyone! I have no experience by making games, I would take someone else to do it in Unity.

I want to have a mobile game with question by character and two possible answers, maybe three. That is the core mechanics. These answers are affecting few other factors.

Now, I am thinking about mechanics how I should implement it, so I wanted to ask you guys, which game design mechanics mechanics would you prefer?

These are 3 cases with mobile screens. Small black lines are answers, one big black line is question.

1st case: Image of person asking is blue square, and you are answering by swooping it left or right, left for left answer, right for right answer

2nd case is like a chat. Blue circle is image of person asking, and you tap on the one or two answers to pick it

3rd is big person asking, and in front of him over body are two buttons for two possible answers, you need to tap which one you want, similar to middle.

4th is not on the picture, but I was thinking also about character on lower left or right, and question cloud on the opposite lower side, and your answer above it.

I want to achieve ease of use with one hand, so it will be in portrait mode, and I do not want them to curve their thumbs on the lower parts of the smartphone because that is not ease of use. So, what do you think is best? Which one would you prefer?

Any adventure games to play with friends?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 12:41 AM PDT

Hi! My wife and I want to kill the boredom with some fun adventure game (no killing and violence :p). Something like the gardens between or monument valley or play dead inside.

I tried googling some but all I found was boring card games and fortnite-like games.

Could anyone suggest something please? Thanks!

Ps: we can't play in apple arcade

Casino app with many different games

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 02:13 AM PDT

There seems to be no shortage of casino games on the App Store. However, I'm searching for a single game that combines both slots and card games, like poker/blackjack and also table games like roulette and baccarat.

Most of the casino apps today are either just slots or just cards and vice versa, and there isn't too much variety in them. Would love any good recommendation.

    "Paid Freemium" Games for iPad?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:00 PM PDT

    Hi!

Like many other people I enjoy playing some freemium games from time to time and, if the game is actually good, I don't mind spending a few bucks here and there. This however got me thinking: Are there any games out there that kinda follow the design principles of freemium games but are paid for up front?

The appeal of these games for me is the gradual build-up of whatever you're playing, improving things and maybe optimizing a few things here and there. Sooner or later however I often hit the "Well, if you want to continue having fun, pay up"-wall. I played Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch extensively, but now it's not fun anymore because in order to progress significantly I'd have to pay. But knowing this kind of game, I'll probably have to pay more and more as time goes on.

Are there any games you could recommend that scratch this "optimizing, building, simulation-ish" (think maybe along the lines of Factorio) itch that I could try out? If the game is actually good I wouldn't mind paying for it - I just don't want to go down the freemium rabbit hole and keep on paying in the future. I did my research but all of these "4324 Best Games of 2020 You Have To Try!"-lists found online are not really helping. Thanks!

    Can someone explain Terraria?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:07 PM PDT

I've seen lots of people recommending Terraria recently and notice it has just gotten controller support. Tempted to try it out but would love to get some thoughts and maybe pros and cons from others. From what I've seen it kind of looks like a 2D minecraft? Is it a game you can play multiplayer with others or single player?
