Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend? - April 06, 2020

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

    Find previous weekly threads here.

Aquarium "game"/simulation that isn't full of IAPs?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:54 AM PDT

I'm stuck working at home like many people all over the world. I'd like something to display on my iPhone while I'm sitting at my desk as a kinda desk ornament--lame, I know. I love aquariums, so an aquarium would be ideal, and I'd like some light interactive features, e.g. feeding the fish. Its primary purpose would be as a desk ornament, though.

I've downloaded Fish Farm 3, and it seems really good...however, it's rife with IAPs and I really hate premium currency games. I really prefer freshwater planted tanks, if possible. Is there anything that may scratch this itch?

Premium games are fine--I'm happy to spend a reasonable amount. I just hate IAP-driven games.

Looking for a game a bit like Clash Of Clans/Civilisation but with a twist

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 06:19 AM PDT

There was a game I played about 15 years ago and I'm wondering if the concept died or continued at all. Obviously back then there was no PTW, so ideally after as little of that as you can get and I get the feeling that's why this whole concept worked. It doesn't have to space-based, just need a similar concept... let me describe the game

Basically you'd start with a planet and you'd be at some coordinates randomly generated by the game on a huge grid. Everything around you was unseen until you sent scouts to report back... so you'd scout around and build your own planet and could build new planets close to you. You sent your scouts or ships and depending how far it was it'd take time for them to come report back (this is where the Civ bit comes in)

As you scouted you found other players ships and planets you could either hail or they could annihilate you or you could annihilate them in PVP. You'd basically build and conquer and join forces with others in clans so you wouldn't get randomly attacked (or you'd have 50 players closing in you very quickly depending where they were in this huge galaxy)

As the game went on you got better systems, guns, speed etc - it was played on universes that rotated so everyone would start at reasonable paces and the game would decide where to put you as a newbie. Eventually you could hyperspace into other universes, if for example the one you're in just kept annihilating you... you could end up anywhere though, you didn't get a choice on where you were going. You got one free hyperspace after 30 days in the starting area

You could either choose a server that reset every few months (but keeping your achievements, points and clan stuff) or one that didn't reset at all or both.

Edit: Just found Star Trek Fleet Command, which is similar... but too much PTW and no reset so it seems everyone who joins just gets stomped on. I thought PTW might ruin this subgenre :(

Idle games without in-app purchases? (Or where they’re truly optional)

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:51 AM PDT

I love idle games on the computer, but so far I've only found two I like on the phone (kittens game and space plan, which wraps up quickly).

I'm happy to pay for a game up front. But I don't like games that try to frustrate me into paying money or watching ads. Anyone have any suggestions?

How enjoyable is Stardew Valley on the iPhone XR?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:42 PM PDT

Are the controls pretty easy or clunky? I know it would be better on an iPad which I don't have and the game is only $5.

Edit: Thanks to everyone's recommendation, I got it. Really liking it so far.

    Doorkickers help?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:02 PM PDT

I'm getting wasted in record time every level. The question I have is:

What am I missing with the "Ultimate" skill? When does it become available? When I choose the saw or sniper strike, I never have the opportunity to use it.

    Oh My Heroes! (2013-?)

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 07:47 AM PDT

It recently came to my knowledge that Oh My Heroes! has been removed from the App Store.

I'd like to know why was it removed and when.

    Only P2W games on iOS?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:21 PM PDT

Amazing that developers cant create something where money gives you esthetics only.

I want something like Tibia, or Clash of Clans, or at least Candy Crush, .. something never ending but still grinding/level/ranking behind it...in summary:

Addictive + being able to compete/compare with friends inside the game easily

Literally everything -sort of good- is P2W on iOS as far as my research goes.

Anybody relate or has any supper hidden good game to suggest?
